Topic: tag being removed

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

Someone (*coughs* Azazial) has been removing the tag pinkish pie out of tu king nowhere. As far as I know its a valid. Ive even usednit before and it used to have at least 7 post using it. Its used to describe a picture or flash where pinkie comes out of nowhere. Like one second nothing then suddenly BAM! Pinkish out of fucking nowhere.

Edit: damn auto correct. Pinkie_pie_out_of_fucking_nowhere

Updated by SnowWolf

Isn't this the sort of thing that is better off as a pool? If this tag stands, do we need *_out_of_fucking_nowhere for any character which appears to be popping up suddenly or from unexpected places?

I also took out some suddenly_ponies tags as well.

Also, if it's not animated or a multi-panel comic how do you know that it was "out of fucking no where"?

Updated by anonymous

I would tend to agree that the *out_of_nowhere tag is unneeded.

Perhaps a general "unexpected_character_appearance" or something along those lines, then you tag the characters/show as normal and you can find them easily enough with a multi-tag search.

That way we have one tag handling all the possible sudden appearances regardless of the character.

Having character specific tags seems odd/silly when we also have character tags.

Updated by anonymous

It wasn't really a necessary tag ever, just an amusing one. I doubt it got searched for, but it might've gotten click-through searches on occasion.

I don't seem to understand the purpose of pools then. The help page for them says "Pools are groups of posts with a common theme." Wouldn't they be ideal for grouping things like memes?

Can you clarify the purpose of pools for me?

They're for comics. The main point is to let people put them in reading order, instead of uploading order.

Are they only for comics?
If so, why are they not to be used for other things?

"out of fucking no where" is defined as "from a completely unexpected location" As in, someone's cereal bowl, the mailbox, on top of the roof across the street, etc. it's not referring to a 'spontaneous transportation and appearance' or anything, just the visual impression that Pinkie pie is suddenly somewhere unexpected. as judged by tag what you see :P

Pools are for comics.
Pools are for series of images that may or may not be sequential but are not comics. pool #1646
Pools are for things like this:
pool #1637
pool #1469
pool #911
pool #1585
pool #639

Wait, someone removed my favorite tag? I spent a lot of time cleaning up that tag and I think it's very valid; it simply describes Pinkie Pie spawning in from absolutely nowhere.

Yeah, this is a retarded action. Should be rolled back and locked if possible.

Yeah I did see an "in the mailbox" tag or something to that effect and I was like "well she certainly appears to be in a mailbox" and went on my merry way.

I think that Hammie's suggestion for that sort of thing is reasonable. "unexpected_character_appearance" or just "unexpected_appearance" because a character suddenly bursting through your TV is generally pretty unexpected. The tag is too specific in the long form or you might as well go around tagging everything "<character>_having_sex" instead of just "sex".

I guess I'll have to think more on pools, but I think I understand why they're not intended for this sort of thing. They do seem like they would be good for grouping specific meme images though not memes as a whole because that would be a tag. "guns" would be a tag but "dual wielding pistols while diving across a church with doves in the background" would be a valid pool?

It's a funny tag. We like funny.

Stop deliberately misunderstanding the purpose of the site's tagging rules in order to make some kind of point on how they are bad. It's incredibly transparent, disingenuous, shallow, and pedantic.

I swear to the all that is holy you are some kind of freaking robot. Its not that you lack common sense, its just simple human concepts like humor or "tongue-in-cheek" completely escape you. Oh no doubt you can define what they are, but your like Data from Star Trek the Next Generation...you can define it, but you can;t feel it.

There I put it back. I think it should go without saying that you shouldn't nuke a tag without discussing it first; it might be serving a purpose you didn't think about.

It is kind of dumb when people come up with a new "funny" tag every week. After a while, images will have 80 tags by default, because people think they're funny. Hopefully, i'll have ascended to Valhalla by then.

Oh , and you linked to a Myspace account. Go to your timeout corner and think about what you've done.

Subjective tags are banned, but funny tags are not even though they're subjective. TWYSNWYK unless it's funny. Fine.

For the record I genuinely think that tag is worthless and the site would be improved by its removal. Humor requires some degree of cleverness and "SURPRISE LOL" stopped being funny in most cases unless you're under two and dazzled by the concept of object permanence.

Updated by anonymous

It's not even that subjective. It's being used selectively, but the meaning is agreed upon. Humor tags that are subjective are like "what" or "what_has_science_done", and they get cleaned up sometimes. And using humor tags is nothing like breaking "straight", "gay", or "herm" just because you don't like how tagging works.

Is there anything else you want to break? A list would be nice.

Updated by anonymous

It's not that subjective of a tag. It describes Pinkie Pie appearing out of nowhere as she often does. Tags like "crap_art" "good_art" "anatomy_anything" are subjective and opinionated, therefore aren't used. This tag is not opinionated, and it's verifiable in the actual image.

Hey you sniped me

As for the nightmare_fuel and what_has_science_done tags, they might be subjective, but they are very very important for blacklists.

I was planning on dropping the subject because I was called on it and said I would back off, but now you have me genuinely confused. Was my statement inaccurate?

I agree with this. I guess that's what null0010 was getting at with his response to me?

I think I've objected to and subsequently been told to STFU on everything I am aware of that I dislike. A list would be nice. Maybe you can offer me suggestions?

It's not a humour tag. It describes a specific situation, where a character or object appears in a location that it shouldn't rightfully be in. On which note, I would also note two things:
1) It's not only for characters. A train suddenly coming out of a garage door would fit within this tag.
2) It's not just for humour. The most obvious situation other than humour where this is used, is for horror; like a head suddenly falling out of a microwave. And sometimes for serious things as well, like a plane suddenly crashing into a building; to the people inside, the plane would've "come from fucking nowhere".

if this is bothering you so much, why are you here. one has to wonder if you just love making drama and trolling.

After several days of watching this user pick apart every tag he or she has any level of disagreement with, then respond to every response by telling everyone how they're so hypocritical while his way is better (and more intelligent and mature), that's the conclusion I've reached.

Mind you, he'll probably report my comment now for not adding anything useful to the conversation.

Just in case, here's what I'm adding: "We've gone over this a lot of times. We understand that you don't agree with the way things are tagged. You've even made it 'official.' The admin have also explained why they're not going to change how tagging works. If both parties are listening to each other, then we should be done here."

P.S. If you've made your point, and they still don't agree, that doesn't mean they don't understand what you've said. You don't have to keep repeating it.

In Azazial's defense, he didn't bring this up on the forums. he was kinda called out on it. You can't blame a man for defensing his actions, and to be honest, the tag in question IS on the edge of what we accept as a 'proper' tag... The only way change happens is to encourage it. And there's NO shame at all in saying "well what about this?"

We don't like it when people cry about things being bad.
We DO like it when people say "well, I don't like this.... and here's how I think it could be better, and why."

Not every suggestion can be taken, but the idea that is never suggested can never happen.

Y'all don't have to be quite so abusive in telling people "no, that idea won't work" :)

Though the statement also is true: if you find a set of tags that does seem to be used, that does seem to describe an idea well enough, but you're not sure about it, feel free to bring it up in the forums. <3 similar before instituting nay sweeping levels of change <3 Sometimes things are a way for a reason.

...and sometimes that reason is that one guy, 4 years ago, thought that was the best way of doing it and there are really a dozen reasons why other ideas are better. :) and sometimes, it's just because it's tried and true. the only way to know is to ask. :)

Darn it, SnowWolf, why do you have to be so logical? Okay, fine, we'll play nice. If you guys don't mind it, there's no reason for us to! :-)
