Search for candy, the word isn't there once.

You eat the stuff that's mixed with the gum. Plain gum would be rather horrid to chew or eat unless you are into that sort of thing.

You eat it just as much as you eat water.
If you're consuming anything that's part of gum it's because it dissolved into your saliva, so it's a liquid.
You don't eat liquids.
