I remember when there were no neutral records. When posting DNP was an instant permaban. When users were banned for tag vandalizing for removing one tag once. When users couldn't vote on images, only priv+. When there were no takedown requests and the staff could just say "fuck off" to artists wanting their art removed. When moderators would routinely and publicly harass artists just because they personally didn't like them. When IP bans were just a placebo function. When users could make aliases and implications, not just suggest them. When there was no quality control and everything was approved regardless of content. When users were immune to bans just because they had certain characters in their names.
Huh...the old days were kind of shit.

This one, I would rather have in effect right now. Just my opinion. The more art is taken down due to whatever fluff, the less this becomes an archive and the more it becomes just another furry art board like every other one on the Internet.
It's a free site, so I have no say in the matter, but (again in my opinion) having art I don't find elsewhere is just over half the reason to come here at all.

e621's Renard explained this in his introductory thread.

On topic: I first registered with the site around '09; I didn't even know it had a forum until a few months later. The site changed hands quickly after that, so I'm not too familiar with the "good old days." I defer to Ippiki's and the other moderators' opinions when it comes to that.
Updated by anonymous
Meh, I don't really see much of a difference. e621 was never a "everyone knew each other" community. The really vocal were "well known" and the less vocal were rarely noticed. As it is in about any community and still is here today. More people didn't change this, it just made it harder to be noticed.
Now in terms of administration e621 is much better off now.

Arcturus and his crew were jackasses. Arcturus treated other people's intellectual property like dirt and forced them to file legal action against e621 to get their art removed. When someone drew unauthorized fan-art of his intellectual property, he pitched a fit like a petulant child and demanded special treatment from FA to get it removed. When someone was fed up with his shenanigans and filed false complaints against e621 with the FBI and caused real legal things to happen for the first time, he fled with his tail between his legs and it is thanks only to the munificence of Varka that this site even exists anymore. Arcturus was a hypocritical cowardly asshole and it is dishonest to remember him otherwise.
The former staff of e621 were capricious, inconsistent, impossible to predict weapons-grade assholes as well. First offenses were worth permanent bans for the tiniest of infractions, such as FFD abuse and poor commenting. The important rules were barely enforced unless some admin didn't like the look of you except for "Shark Week" which was "rule enforcement week."
Look at this old user record.
Now look at this new user record.
See the difference? Both were first offenses.

Only thing that still puzzles me is that "TheDogInYourGuitar" user, like, who was he/she? Or what did he/she do to skip approval?

I might be able to contribute an observation or two, though much of what I might have said has already been posted. Besides, one more zero to cross off the user page.
I'm actually rather pleased with how the site has grown up from its wild-west beginnings. Sure, you can romanticize the past as a tight userbase, but it was pretty much chaos. And you were never sure how long the site was going to stay around.
Still, e6 continued to grow. In spite of some drama resulting from its early lawless days and uneven enforcement, it gained mascots (we never managed to pick just one), a permanent home, and some consistent rules. And even though the userbase has grown tremendously, I see a few of the same names in the comments (partially because Iippiki Ookami is such a dynamo) and there's still a sense of continuity here.
Anyway, therabidwanker, if it makes you feel better some of us can just comment-stalk you to make the site feel smaller if you really want :P

I may have been confused and wanting to explore beyond the US but I ment not to be creepy but we all learn, you just need to know where to look. I have been inspired by Bloodlordjm when he was helping cheer me up when I was fresh out of a ban then eventually moved on to Ibrony last March and long after become a Guardian himself and I followed him and things were quiet just like you mentioned but it wasn't long before the population began to grow quickly.

Actually we have artist on this site that act like they are on a high horse so to speak, thinking they can advertise, and tag a image of a male as a female just because they drew it, and if anything goes wrong they threaten to remove their art from the site.
Now this isnt about respect, its just some artist like to use the fact "I'm an artist and If i dont like something I'll make a taken down request to get the admins to make things my way happen" ....this tends to happen a lot with tags, and other images. Some artists seem to abuse this, and even brag on how they can break rules because they are the artist and "without them this site wouldnt have art on it" Yet again, anything they dont like, they threaten taken down requests till they get what they want.
Mostly power trips...

Nevertheless, these guys and gals can outlive their welcome and then they will get stomped.

Only because the idiots are the loudest part doesn't make them an essential part.

I see what you are saying Conker but the site needs to take the higher ground on this stuff, or fall into the way of the old site (which failed and nearly died, if you remember). Yes, the vocal minority are like that. But to go the other way is much, much worse.
I've always found it funny when artists get angry about here. Half my follows on FA are from pics here WHEN PEOPLE SOURCE CORRECTLY.
Also, the improper gender tagging from the artists can usually be handled (carefully, not being a twat) by telling the artist why. Some go ballistic, but they were imbalanced to begin with lol

The problem is, when a image is tagged as 1 sex the artist says its another.....usually we go by tag what we see, however when the artist suddenly makes a threat of a take n down request, ive seen people change there tone right after.....Honestly its wrong. I know e621 wants to keep the art on the site, however they shouldnt make special exceptions and kiss there ass over them not making a take down request or using it as some threat.

Conker I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there is no way in a million years the old administration would have given you as many chances and warnings as the current administration has. You would not have been on this site in the old days. :P (you joined the site just a few days before Varka and I came along and all of the old administrative staff left).
But to address your point, no, artists are NOT given "preferential" treatment on e621. However, we do expect you guys to simply not be dicks in general, whether it's to the artists or not (and we expect the same of the artists; don't think we're afraid to ban or give negative records to them when necessary).
However, e621.net HAS developed a strong reputation of being a "troll" site, and artists simply aren't going to want to post their own stuff to a "troll" site (and many will go that extra step of filing a takedown request). And if you're not coming here for the art, then I'm not really sure what you're doing with all of your time on e621. So honestly I'd expect e621 users to specifically try to NOT be dicks to artists, when all you're going to end up doing is shoot EVERYBODY (as in all e621 users) in the foot as a result.
I had something else I was going to say here but got distracted for like an hour. Shit.

This isn't a one way street.
You can't keep taking and taking from artists, then deny them when they want to exercise some autonomy over their work.
The reason I chose to and continue to choose to help run this site is because it defers to artists and users to a startlingly even degree. Not perfectly evenly, mind you, but much more balanced than other sites that either let the users run rampant and simply tell content creators "Fuck off," when they disagree with them, or where artists are treated as princes and have strangleholds over their intellectual property.
If an artist files a takedown request from the site, then fine, you as a user miss out on an iota of content. But they also miss out on exposure to the entire e621 user base. Speaking as an artist myself, the latter is a much worse loss. As a user you can always find other, similar work that's being given away consensually; the only one who can get more exposure for an artist is him or herself. A lot of other artists fail to recognize that, and in the end that's their loss.
That's why I like how e621 handles the artist/user relationship: both parties have something to gain from it. If an artist wants to be stupid and have both parties lose out, it's their own damn fault.
...Unless it's commercial work. 'Cause that's just theft.

Well I come here for posting images I find every now and then, and tagging images. But what i mean has nothing to do with people being mean to any artists, it just some people like to use threats of take down requests to get what they want.
-----
Char I am only posting this as you requested...I am not trying to cause any trouble, its just this is a perfect example of what I mean.
--------
Anyway as requested a perfect example are these two images.
https://e621.net/post/show/258514 [] https://e621.net/post/show/287313
-----
None of the images show any sexual parts, both where once tagged with ambiguous gender. The person who owned the char said it was male, but then an admin said other wise.
However another admin came across it, then said both images where ambiguous gender.....
As seen here
Aurali said:
This IS ambigous. Same with the other image.
null0010 said:
Now we have to tag this image ambiguous_gender. There's no genitals showing and you can't see any breasts either. Please do not change the gender tag of this post.
null0010 said:
No. This is ambiguous_gender. Stop.
However on the other image you can clearly see them changing there mind, on the 2nd image the artist made a threat of a take down request.
The comment was hidden but it was quoted here is what was said.
"Vorry said:
Well, I'm the artist of this particular image, and would prefer it to accurately represent the character. If for some reason you are refusing to let me do that, I would like to request you remove this particular piece of art from your website."
Suddenly after that threat of a taken down request, the image is tagged female...and then we see this comment.
Aurali said:
No seriously. This can definitely be construed female, the eyes and curve lines make it up. Secondary sex characteristics CAN make it male or female. not just penis and vagina.
Now before Aurali saw the artist comment about a taken down request, they viewed both of them as ambigous. After the threat now its suddenly female due to "eyelashes" and cury lines? that could be seen as girly not female, and the reason was eyes? ...last time I checked eyelashes dont = a sex.
As said in the first image, there is no genitals or breasts shown so it wasn't tagged female or male. So why is the 2nd image tagged female when the first was not? Eyelashes? thats just being girly, that doesn't mean its female.
---------------------------------
Its clear the images where changed due to a simple threat of a taken down request. This is just 1 example of a thing I have been noticing a lot lately with artists and threats of taken down removals to get what they want.
I want the site wants to keep images up, but when you have people going back on what they said and the artists are pushing people around with these threats.....well it just isn't right.
Also recently Ive seen a artist upload a pic, then go on to advertise facebook for likes. [example found here http://e621.net/post/show/296446 ]
With comments like this.
"Shalinka said:
I need help for a contest please :) Just go to the Source link and like it ! Thanks so much, if I get enough likes I will win a lot of advertising and money in at a convention !"
Ive seen users with marks on there account for advertising, the artist then goes on to say
Shalinka said:
I don't think it's a problem on this website. Cause I'm a contributor ;)
They act like they can post whatever advertisement they want just because they uploaded a image they made.
Again ive seen people get negative marks for advertising when they where not artists before, yet it seems they went easy on this user due to them being an artist and due to some other member being a massive dick. It still shouldn't excuse there advertising and comments. That one is a smaller example, but the first example I feel is a better one.
---
I hope this is a good enough example for you. Once more, I am merely posting this on request, not to cause drama.

As far as I'm concerned, an artist who gets pissy about free exposure with proper sourcing/accreditation, we are better off without their art anyway. There is such a thing as common courtesy, and then there is such a thing as letting courtesy get in the way of the actual purpose of existence. It's the same bullshit that goes on in the Minecraft modding community over permission to integrate, pack, and redistribute free mods.
I am willing to live in a world with fewer creative people contributing nice things, if that world is also not run by the Pussyfoot Chorus. And, as I have power and control over no-one and nothing, this is only my opinion and in the grand scheme of things is completely irrelevant, so it may be safely ignored.

What new evidence? The artist making a treat is now evidence? There isnt any evidence besides some girly eyelashes in the image, and you saw both images, yet changed your mind after the artist made the threat as well as a few other admins. If the artist didnt make that threat of a take down request, that image wouldn't be tagged as female as it shows no genital nor breasts.
Also for the record, an admin even told me it was just changed to keep the artist happy so they dont remove the art. I know no one wants images removed, but the rules shouldnt bend over when an artist makes a threat like that.

I have no problem giving artists leeway from time to time if it keeps their art on the site and leaves them with a positive impression. Because then they can go on FA and tell all their followers how respectful we are and how enjoyable their experience is/was with us. On the other end of the spectrum, we slap them on the hand or berate them for not knowing the rules and next thing you know they're pulling their art from the site, getting put on DNP, and posting journals saying never to come here and that we are rude to artists.
I'm more than happy to swallow my pride for the sake of seeing the site grow and keeping it prosperous.

I have no problem giving artists leeway from time to time if it keeps their art on the site and leaves them with a positive impression. Because then they can go on FA and tell all their followers how respectful we are and how enjoyable their experience is/was with us. On the other end of the spectrum, we slap them on the hand or berate them for not knowing the rules and next thing you know they're pulling their art from the site, getting put on DNP, and posting journals saying never to come here and that we are rude to artists.I'm more than happy to swallow my pride for the sake of seeing the site grow and keeping it prosperous.
(And then change the image back to the correct tags after the artist in question has moved on and turned their chronic butthurt toward other things)

You mean before this godawful MLP fad took over? Yea, I remember, and I miss it. Adding -my_little_pony to the search filter cuts more than half of the results from each page, most of it isn't even erotic, and what is usually ends up pretty poorly drawn.
And even if you can stomach your way past the MLP, you've still gotta sort through all the troll crap that gets posted to find decent artwork.

Adding -my_little_pony to search filter does not cut results at all. However if you're adding -my_little_pony to your blacklist then I can understand your butthurt.

Those bastards drawing mlp are forcing others to post lower quality of artwork. Bastards!
Troll harder.

I created an account just so I could respond to this message as it really bothers me. Do you people really have so little respect for artists and character owners that you'll go against their wishes to have their images tagged properly? The artists and character owners should have the final say on what gender their characters are tagged with. If they designed a female character that doesn't conform to the female human body, the image should still be tagged female. I'm seeing far too many females on this site being tagged cuntboy because the "tag what you see" rule tries to apply human standards to creatures that aren't human. It needs to stop and this lack of regard for artists and character owners needs to stop as well.

So, you mean, that if an artist draws an orange and claims that it's apple, we should tag it as an apple?

Yeah but we keep having people claiming that horses are zebras, just because they hear a hoofbeat. (or see a sillouette. whatever makes the analogy better)

what about the poor regards of our search system @.@ too many times a character switches genders and suddenly every image out there is suddenly gotta be switched to make up for it. I forget who it was, but a chick got really offended and took down her art because she changed her characters gender to a female and it.. well it had a penis! Im sorry. Some people just want to watch the world burn.

There is a difference between "respecting" and "coddling".
And again I say, if the artist has drawn the art so that it cannot be legitimately tagged what the artist says it is, then the artist has done a piss-poor job and should be embarassed, not irate. If it doesn't look like what you say it is, too fucking bad.

This, tagging what is seen in an image is the line where I would tell an artist to go fornicate with a cactus.
You are the artist, you see your own creations always differently than others, letting those tag based on what they see ensures a useful objectivity needed for a searchable database.
It is just sad if they can't or won't comprehend that.

I had an idea for the tagging system, but I don't know how well it would work:
You would keep your main tagging system intact, based on WHAT YOU "SEE", but there would be sub tagging system in place for WHAT YOU "KNOW".
Thus, an image may be seen as X, and if you were looking for X, said image would fit X perfectly, but knowing the artist or back story of the drawing or charater, you "know" that its really Y.
------
But yea, i'd also feel the art take down system is too easy. The only art that should be taken down is if it doesn't exist on the artists page any longer (old art, no longer want to be seen) or is from a paid site. Honestly, if its on FA (or where ever else), and e621 links to said source, we should just tell them to bugger off. Its on the internet, why should it matter that its also here? You put it on the internet (on a free site), you want people to see it (on a free site). So why should it be taken down when its on here also?
