Topic: Do Stories Without Artwork Get Popular?

Posted under Off Topic

As the title says... I'm an extraordinary writer, but I can't draw or sketch to save my life... I'd like to write something that the fandom would hopefully enjoy as much as artwork; but as far as I'm concerned, if it doesn't have a heterosexual twist or happens to be a comic; it doesn't get far at all, despite how great the writing would be...

People will still appreciate text stories, but it'd be better if you could get someone to do several illustrations.

I once saw a story about marijuana in SF and it had got the most comments I have ever seen on a furry story.

> Admins deleted that and banned artist. :D

So Sad, he could have been the #1 popular furry writer :P

Let me give an example... Even bad writers are popular because of the porn in their comics.. I won't give any names of certain writers/animators (Who write on par with palcomix), and artists who wear the coattails that the other rides on; but even bad writers with great porn supports get somewhere.. I'm a good writer, but I have little to no skill in art. My hand tends to shake... Ehem... Anyway, I was thinking of writing a Zootopia fanfic (a long one, with extended chapters), with a few OC's and a few story arcs... (because face it, Zootopia lacks gay ships, so I may as well make characters for it...) Buuut~ It brings me back to the topic at hand..

i mainly read fanfics though i have seen a good number of VERY well written stories as fanfics. if your willing to look past the fact they're a fanfic and/or any disliking you may have for the fandom in question (since i know some people probably can't even manage that much without saying it sucks just because of whichever fandom such a story is from.) then who knows, maybe i know some stories you might really enjoy checking out.

2 in particular i know of (don't know how popular the super mario one got as i never saw hardly any comments aside from my own and the author's on deviantart.) that are REAL good stories that took quite a long time to complete (and one is still ongoing) are... Super Mario Apocalypse by zhaich (it can be found on his deviantart account and took at least 8 years to finish iirc.) and Stories in Stone by TDR on fimfiction.net. (same here yet now theres a 4th book being made so it's still ongoing)

I've written fanfiction for almost seven years, and I've only been drawing for just over a year.

Perhaps transitioning into a comic book format would help you? But if you claim to be an extraordinary writer, the imagination would probably work better for the reader than an image.

Perhaps you can find someone who can illustrate your work. Someone who is skilled. Or you can take up art alongside writing. It's not that hard. Take it from me.

If you have to say you are something. You are not that thing.

I am a living being.

To answer your question, yes. However, you need to find ways to reach out to others/grab their attention. Most of the time people think they can just work on their own and be successful, good luck with that. You don't have to have your story be drawn like a comic, but some illustration would be nice. There's plenty of writers here that have a single art and well written story. Give it a try and ask someone to do the art for you if you can't.

what is this "trust" you speak of?

also, so long as you still have what is known as an imagination then yeah, pictureless stories can be great. lord of the rings, harry potter, several others i can't remember the names of right offhand are good and pretty popular (i wouldn't call it "good" but theres also the dreaded twilight saga that got pretty popular) and they had no pictures. just thick books full of mountains of text.

...i just remembered i have one laying around i never finished reading...somewhere. iirc it was because it's one of those where the perspective switches between several characters every so often which can get a bit disorienting and confusing. for me at least.

ah, 3 of them. battlefield earth (1k+ pages), fortress of dragons by c.j.cherryh, (547 pages followed by a 17 page lexicon in the back with all the different terms used throughout the book.) and dragons of summer flame by margaret weis & tracy hickman (part of that dragon lance series, 585 pages). might still have 1 or 2 lord of the rings books too.

By that logic, you aren't "Cynosure Minuette". Which can be considered identity theft. Love how your own logic can ironically turn against you?

Zootopia fan fiction. Awesome.

It would be far more reasonable to say 'the more aggressively you assert you are X, the more doubtful it becomes that you actually are X.'

Although it does seem reasonable to say that Cynosure probably isn't the Cynosure that they think that they are. Would that be 'identity fraud'? (not theft, since the thief and victim are the same person)

On a serious note, it depends what you mean by "popular". You can get a certain amount of popularity with written stories. I've got several hundred watchers from my stories, and I rarely ever manage to get anything posted. Several thousand would be easy to achieve, if you were a bit more prolific, or particularly talented.

Chances are you aren't going to get the numbers that major artists do though. There are quite a few reasons why this is, but that's not really what you're asking about.

Point being, yes, you can get a certain amount of popularity with stories, but you will generally gain popularity more slowly than with more visual forms of art.

That's not how the "logic" works.

It's about being humble. Not being cocky and self-important.

If you are good at something you won't need to tell others that you are good at that thing. They will know.
