Topic: User comment spam: advice?

Posted under e621 Tools and Applications

So a certain user just pretty much flooded my comments page with nothing but a single period (.)

It really bothers me, and I've already messaged them about it, but according to their on-site history they won't be back on for at least a few days.

So, admins, am I to do about it?
Advice from other users welcomed as well.

Under the Spamming or Trolling clause of the Rules wiki page:

"Excessively communicating the same phrase, similar phrases, or pure gibberish"

In this case, it's spamming ., which is both the same phrase and gibberish, so I just reported one of their comments and pointed out that they've made several of the same across multiple posts. Would probably be for the best to just report this in the future and not make a thread to give them less attention.

This. Report them to get it by the source.

(I've handled it by the way, thank both of you for tracking it down :) )

I... did not report them because I wanted show the user at least a small amount of mercy on my end. (I was giving the benefit of doubt incase they didn't know it had happened via glitch or something.) I already know the struggles of waiting 6 months to get rid of a neutral record and I didn't want to cause that for them as well. (I'm still waiting for mine to be gone.)

I only created the thread in order to learn of a way to hide the comments on my end for the time being.

I'm sorry. I guess, by showing this act of kindness, I created more trouble for others.

I sincerely apologize.

Things like spamming/harassing are best to let admins deal with. A lot of times for something small they'll start with a message privately to the user and doesn't result in anything public.

Even with a neutral record, it will go away like you said (even if it does take a little while), and if it was a mistake/glitch the individual can contact the admin and potentially get it removed earlier.

Neutrals aren't punishment in any case, just a record that something happened in case the person keeps doing it. It's kind of like when a cop gives you a warning: it still tends to be put on the computer in case another cop stops you in a week for the same thing, but if you don't do anything else it doesn't affect you.

Sorry you feel guilty. I used to try and send messages directly instead of involving admins, but in my experience if you aren't an admin they mostly ignore you and take lack of admin response as permission to do more and it becomes a bigger issue.

...And it's so easy to pass that line into "backseat moderating" and get in trouble yourself when all you were trying to do was keep people out of trouble.

That. That part right there is the worst for me most times.

As I person who truly cares about everyone (eSix or Otherwise), I feel a sort of responsibly (on eSix), that I should warn users of certain things, especially if they do not mean harm by what they are doing, or if they are new here.

But then I think about the "no backseat moderating" rule and when they goof up, I start to feel guilty about not warning them when I probably should have.

Sometimes, I even think about a thing I saw a user do in the morning throughout the day and when I get back on, I start to contemplate risking my own record (even though like you said, it's just a sort of warning) to warn them of possible consequences.

But I always decide against it for my own sake. Then when the user gets a neutral or even negative record at a later date for the same thing, I feel like I alone let them down.

It's not easy, but it is the rules. I don't make them, but I must to follow them.

That's what's the report button is for at the bottom of each of their comments.

Yeah, that's cute~

But, umm, while empathy is a great quality to possess, it shouldn't get out of hand and start to control your life.
I mean, not over something as inconsequential as E6.

[User] just formally apologized to me.

...I feel like a total landfill now. I didn't mean for [user] to get a record and I'm the one caused it in the first place.

[user] (cause i'm not going to say names) If you read this, i'm sorry, mate.

you're not the one who broke the rules

its their fault for being a spammy jackass

they're just trying to emotionally manipulate you in the hopes that you somehow have the power to reverse their bad record

they're only "sorry" cuz they got in trouble

I believe in getting all of the facts before making assumptions, whether those assumptions are positive or negative.

Maybe the person was not entirely in a clear state of mind when they did it, or maybe someone else got on their computer and did it without them knowing. Or maybe, just maybe, you are correct and they are just being manipulative. But without knowing for certain all the facts beforehand, I cannot bring myself to pass such harsh judgment on them.

Though to your point, I have let the user know that I am powerless in the matter. We have both accepted this fact and have moved on.

Acoustic to that mentioned user, thread-lock requests to your own thread is not applicable.
