Topic: e621 Performance Feedback Thread

Posted under General

The performance varies for me. List-pages (like https://e621.net/post/index?page=n) and post-pages (like https://e621.net/post/show/id) vary from 3 to 10 seconds to load the page. The time the images take to load is not included. (Btw: how are these pages called?)

I didn't log in multiple times, but the one time I did was subjectively faster than usual. Profile-pages also load faster than I remember them to do.

Images and thumbnails load as fast as always. I assume they are stored on a different server?

Edit: Submitting this post was also faster than it used to be.

Also I'm in Austria here.

The site as a whole is performing much faster and better than before but I am having a issue where I get a 500 error every time I try to send a message but my friend can send messages to me.

It's a good thing I have an App I purchased from the App Store called, "Puffin". If you say that now the site loads faster, well Puffin will make it speed up TWICE as fast in less than 90 milliseconds. :3

Nothing wrong atm for me. Site loading very fast.

Though that serpent background god damn blinded me when I logged in.

Due to having HTTPs, sometimes accessing the site just take more than 25 seconds to finish loading. but overall. No 500 error and seems OK to me

Right now that seems to be related to some packet loss from our upstream bandwidth provider rather than HTTPS; we are investigating (it is a Sunday, so I suspect scheduled maintenance is to blame).

Site is exceptionally slow today, tons of 500s on all pages and pages sometimes take minutes to properly transfer and load.

This is weird. I get 404 Errors extremely often. I mean... not found? How is that even possible?
When I reload the page a few times it works... partially. Sometimes it doesn't load the whole page (looks like the styles are missing).

I've noticed same problems.

Using this site in the US evening used to be like pulling teeth with dental floss while drunk off my ass. For the past couple weeks, it's been smooth and flawless all hours of the day. So there you go.

This hasn't worked for months now. It was disabled because it was putting too much of a strain on the server. I've not heard any plans yet for bringing it back, unfortunately.

tbh, I hated that feature. Glad it's gone.

You could toggle it on or off in your settings.
You still can but it won't really do anything.

Oh, I know- did so when I first could. Still hated it and glad it's gone, since it's less likely to Youtube itself into unalterable permanency. ;)

I am having issues with receiving 500 errors every time I try to load a new page. If I reload it will load the page correctly. Not sure how often this has been happening for other people. I use firefox and ghostery. Don't know if these programs interfere.

I'm betting it's because they turned "tag history" back on.
Cuz, they did, and it was off for "performance reasons" or some such.

But I'll take a few 500 errors over no tag history every day of the week.

So when I look up the tags "gay gif" I get a 404 error when ever I click to go to page two O.o
Anyone else having this problem?

Seems like about 30-40% of the time, my iPhone 4S (using safari) can't connect to the server, requiring up to 5 refreshes for it to load... Hum.

Updated by anonymous

I tried to put this in the bug report thread but, oddly enough, I get an error trying to load it! So add that too, I 'spose.

Lately (the last 2-3 days) I've had issues loading SOME images. Funny thing is I can see the image fine in the thumbnail, but it refuses to load. These images won't load in any browser. It's about every 1 in 10 that refuse to load and there's about a 1 in 10 chance that hitting the download link will let me load it. The other 9 times it just refreshes the page (with the image still not loaded). Chrome is my main, although I've tried FF and Opera. I went into the developer console and here is the error I get for these images that won't load.

"The page at 'https://e621.net/post/show?md5=279aa3a6d2a95ed3a6e7b123c7134ebe' was loaded over HTTPS, but displayed insecure content from 'http://e621.net/post/md5redirect?id=279aa3a6d2a95ed3a6e7b123c7134ebe': this content should also be loaded over HTTPS."

Of course, you can go to the link in the first part to see which file is one that won't load for me (Explicit, of course, so care there).

I don't have any firewalls or security software and I haven't installed anything over the last several weeks save for Diablo 3, which I highly doubt is the cause. Any info or help or acknowledgment of the issue would be greatly appreciated. I do quite enjoy collecting furry porn and it's rather upsetting when a particularly enticing thumbnail leads to an error. It just adds to that "I can't have it so I want it even more." feeling. Cheers, and thanks! :)

Site has been experiencing some traffic issues last few days, problem is known and being fixed

Updated by anonymous

For the past few days the site has been completely inaccessible for me from the UK, however I've found that that a proxy is working fine. Anyone have any idea if there are some DNS issues going on?

Updated by anonymous

Also, links to static.e621.net are working as normal too. Website checkers have mixed results, most say up but a few day down.

Updated by anonymous

I've wondered that too, but the pattern doesn't really seem in line with my ISP blocking the pages. I haven't known isp blocking to result in timeouts before.
Whatever the reason is I thought it best to post here simply to see if anyone else is affected or not.

Updated by anonymous

It's because we switched our IP and it's just taking a few days for some people's/ISP's DNS caches to update.

Anyone else having random images just not show up? I'll see the thumbnail, open it up (usually in a new tab), and instead of the image, I'll get the default "broken/missing image" icon, and no matter how many times I refresh the page, or close and reopen the browser, or wait and come back the next day, or click "full size" or "download" it won't load the image. Actually, clicking "download" usually causes it to reload the same page rather than opening a page with just the image. If the page loads as it normally should and I click download, it will open up a page with just the image, but for some reason if the image does not load after clicking the thumbnail, nothing I do will get it to load.

I use Chrome as my web browser, and my OS is Windows XP. A friend of mine (KrymsonFlame on here) has also mentioned having the same problem. I don't know what browser or OS he uses, though.

I looked there, but there isn't any solution, so as this is an actual bug reporting thread, I figure it's best to bring it up here where it's a little more likely to get attention from those who might be able to offer a solution.

The biggest problem I see every other time I'm on e621 is issues connecting to the site because it's under a heavy load, but there's not much that can easily be done about that. Guess this is just a popular site.

Updated by anonymous

The site has been lagging like crazy lately. For a few days it would tell me there is an overload, so I cannot load, now when I click on images, it takes ages for them to render or load all together.

I know that it is an overload to the servers, but I was thinking it was best to mention something, so maybe you can maybe fix the situation if you can.

Updated by anonymous

I too am experiencing pretty severe server issues the last week or so. Tons of "site under heavy load" messages and white error pages full of tech wizz gibberish. Seems to happen by far the most frequently when uploading images or altering tags, but I have seen heavy load messages while browsing.

It actually appears to get worse every day, it's now gotten to the point where half of the time I have to do multiple (sometimes up to five) attempts just to add some tags (thank god they stay in the cache when hitting FF's back button), or pause and come back later, and it is starting to put me off. It's just demotivating.

Wonder what's the cause exactly. We can't be generating that much more traffic all of a sudden, right?

"This website is under heavy load

We're sorry, too many people are accessing this website at the same time. We're working on this problem. Please try again later"

I don't think its load are there really that many people online e621 at 12:01AM cst?

I believe this should be resolved soon. What you're seeing is where the "Blacklisted" thumbnail would normally load instead of the post's thumbnail, but the JS is looking in the wrong place for the "Blacklisted" thumbnail. If you clear your blacklist, you'll see that all the thumbnails display normally.

Loading a page takes around 20-30 seconds to load in comparison with the 2-4 seconds it took me yesterday.

I'm having trouble using the Reverse harry.lu Search since yesterday. It takes minutes to search for an image instead of seconds.

The strange thing is that the engine still says it searched the image in half a second.

This. I'm not even sure if I'll be able to get this posted between the constant batches of 500 errors. I was getting a few late last night too.

And sometimes when I can get a page to load, it will load only halfway, with formatting errors, etc. So there's barely any functionality with trying to do anything on the site right now. It's gonna take some careful persistence to even post this.

Updated by anonymous

The proper people are aware of this, Dave also already poked stuff around, hopefully they're gone soon.

Updated by anonymous

Can't seem to search half the time, it just returns an error page (nondescript)

Updated by anonymous

Site loading issues? In the last 24 hours, I've been getting a lot of 522 errors earlier today, also a patch where it was loading so slowly that forum threads were loading one post at a time and eventually timing out, and some 520 errors just now.

Also, if you are writing something in a forum post and hit preview when the site is feeling like having a 520 error, it will reload the whole page and erase your post-in-progress in the process. It used to just give a text version of the error in the preview pane so that you knew the site was having a hiccup but still had the option to try again in a few minutes. But taking the whole page with it is just downright evil.

In terms of minimizing server load, what's the optimal # of posts per page? More, or less?

I had been going on the theory that less was better. But when I started thinking of the database queries involved from paging through say the first 600 results, I got the suspicion that the load from providing a higher number of thumbnails would actually be less
than the load of rerunning the query for each new page. (say, with 150 posts/page, the server would query 600/150 = 4 times, as opposed to 75 posts / page, which would be 8 times)

Anyway the above is my theorizing. Has any actual testing on this subject been done?

In addition to 520s often when I try to load an image by clicking the Download link I get a Cloudflare page with a 525 error, implying that there is a problem with SSL. The error page tells me the "local" Cloudflare server (Sydney for me) is working just fine. Images have been loading slowly, plus timeouts and errors are occurring very frequently. I can't really use the site anymore until the issue is resolved :(

Updated by anonymous

Same as above, for about the last week 520's cloud flare errors and ridiculously long load times, most of the time the images don't even show and all I see is the bounding box

Updated by anonymous

I've seen some 521 errors from Cloudflare today, plus frequent slowdowns.

Updated by anonymous

Hey there. Site has been basically un usable for the last few days due to timing out on the majority of pages. Prior to the last few days the site had been slow for a few weeks, but usable, with 85% ish of pages being able to load. Would really enjoy for the site to be back up and running at max speed. Thank you very much.

Updated by anonymous

Trying the website now, it seems to be loading quickly. It was working earlier today when I tried as well. When I was experiencing issues I had been visiting e621 at approximately the same time each day. Perhaps this happened to be a time when the site receives a high amount of traffic. Thanks.

Updated by anonymous

Count me in for the Cloudflare issues too, getting a lot of 5xx issues some days, or just images being slow / not loading at all on others
Seems to only be a problem for Australians connecting to the Sydney node, since while myself and others here have issues, people in US/EU can connect fine
