Topic: e621 Performance Feedback Thread

Posted under General

Well, for all the rightful complaining, I have to say the site appears to be working fine today, like since I woke up a few hours ago. That's a first in five days straight. :)

I'm occasionally getting Error 500 Internal Server Error when opening up pictures and I just got one trying to post this. Is anyone else experiencing this?

I started a big maintenance job to run on the tag counts which is taking up a lot of server resources. I originally estimated it would already be finished several hours ago but it's taking longer than I had expected.

It shouldn't be much longer now (some time within the next day or so). I'll keep an eye on it and update this post when I've confirmed it as being finished.

Edit: Done.

That makes me curious, actually -- are 'nice' values relevant to such a process on a full-scale DB? Was about to suggest using 'nice' or 'renice' to make it play.. nicer, but realized I don't know whether that would work when all the real work is being done in a separate process (ie. the database server process rather than the process that's sending all the necessary SQL to it.)

A bit of research seems to suggest 'You can do that, but it might not work as well as you'd hope. Inserting delays in the client program is a more reliable strategy.'

It's actually closer to a memory leak than anything.

Getting multiple 502 bad gateway errors from cloud flare, then suddenly got several 500 internal server errors...
Uh...?
The 502's where common for me before though not to this degree but the 500 is new...

No idea what's causing it at this point, but our sysadmin is looking into it. They did a reboot on the DB not too long ago, but I'm thinking the cause must be elsewhere (my ability to diagnose it is more/less limited to what I can access on-site).

I'm still getting 502s with every few page loads. Any idea when it will be fixed? It's hard to use the site like this :(

Sorry about the connection issues, I've been informed that we just got hit with a small DDoS not too long ago. Although we've mitigated it for e621, e926 will be down for a bit until we can get it behind Cloudflare (we just need to contact the right people).

Updated by anonymous

For some reason I got a 502 error, and when I closed the page and reopened it I can no longer see the thumbnails of any subsequent new posts, it gives me a broken image link. When I tried searching for posts, the results page was missing some thumbnails as well. Not sure what's going on.

Edit: It seems back to normal, I hope it doesn't come back. Sorry about this. I think it was just some kind of hiccup in the server or static.e621 or something. All of this errors and stuff this past few days is concerning me a bit.

Getting unfixable 520 errors having to do with Cloudflare. This happened 1-2 months ago, and started up again yesterday. And it seems to only be either for me or my Area's cloudflare server. I forgot how I fixed it, or how it was fixed. HTTP:// and HTTPS:// both don't work, which was my only inkling on how to get it to be fixed. Clearing cookies, flushing sockets, none of that worked yet.

EDIT: Remembered how to fix it. If you cannot log onto either e926 or e621 without a 520 Cloudflare error, use the website that DOES work, go to your Account settings, copy your Blacklist, all of it, into a word document, then sort it by Alphabetical. Delete any and all repeats and unnecessary items, then delete your blacklist on the website and paste your new fixed list. This should allow you back onto your not-working website.

I trimmed your blacklist by an additional ~10% in exchange for finding some aliases/implications that needed to be put through. If you want the pre-edited version let me know. :P

The performance since the site maintenance was completed is much better, its quite noticeable

I've noticed that I can no longer upvote/downvote my own comments.

I assume that applies for (almost) everyone else on e621?

That was never supposed to be possible, so yeah, they removed it. Are comment votes now recorded per user, so that we can change them?

Thanks for fixing that enter button functionality on the upload page, that was such a pain in the ass and has bothered me for years!

Not quite yet, but it's something we're planning on doing.

I just got an NTDLL.DLL hang on Chrome from clicking download on This image.

I can't get it to repeat, so I'm thinking it's my end. Just wanted to bring it up and make sure though.

Any news on the strange issues with flashes recently? Just in the last few days, some flashes being uploaded are really tiny.Examples: https://e621.net/post/show/824613/alcohol-alien-amphibian-anal-anal_penetration-anim https://e621.net/post/show/823565/3d_-artwork-animated-anthro-bad_metadata-boxers_-c https://e621.net/post/show/823378/2015-abdominal_bulge-anal-anal_fingering-anal_pene https://e621.net/post/show/822467/2015-amy_rose-animated-anthro-archie_comics-bad_me https://e621.net/post/show/821807/-2015-3d_-artwork-3-alcohol-all_fours-anal-anal_pe some people in the comments of these are saying something about "metadata" and they're tagged "bad_metadata".

We're already aware. Basically the part of the code that grabs flash dimensions from the file is broken, so it's doing all sorts of weird things on the post page (which uses dimensions to shape the file on the page).

You can hit download to make it a bit more tolerable. Just note that you may have to play with the window shape slightly to keep it from looking jagged and weird (it's a side effect of resizing flash files).

I've been encountering sporadic 500 errors for a few days now.
Other than that the site is running superb.

Attempting to upload my first image, and every singe time I keep getting a 500 Error. I know it's not because I'm not allowed to upload images, because my account is over a week old (made it recently because for some reason my blacklist stopped working as an accountless lurker)

Updated by anonymous

Same here. Upload was working fine and then suddenly stopped working, also tried upload file but no success.

Specifically, "500 Internal Server Error" "If you are the administrator of this website, then please read this web application's log file to find out what went wrong."

Here as well. Actually, I think the forum's having some issue as well, or maybe it's just the browser... I'm posting this to see if it's something on my browser or not...

Edit: Ok NVM! Turns out a proxy I was trying out got kinda weird with the forum posting... > 3>

Not sure why, but performance dropped in the toilet (and I mean one of those nasty, never-cleaned truck stop toilets where you wouldn't sit on them even if your butt was about to explode) tonight. Latest attempt (as in 2 minutes ago) to search on a tag returned the error code "b1a59da2eee7b3e3170114255caf687a".

[edit] Performance is back up to about normal, 27 minutes later. Must have been a temporary glitch.

It's on and off. Mostly things are fine, thankfully.

I'm getting a lot of 500 errors during posting: the image uploads, but then I get the error. By my estimate, it happens at about 30% of all my upload attempts. It doesn't matter at which time I do the uploads, high or low server load apparently doesn't factor into it.

Same here. Some it's letting through, but not others.

My latest attempt shows a "not found" thumbnail when I select the file to upload, and if I try to submit it anyway after tagging based on the source page it times out with a 500 error.

Kind of annoying, really.

Never mind, the problem was on my end, with a bad save that had a broken file format.

For me, probably just my crappy internet causing images to stop loading.

Also the [+Favorites] bug is still going on where image is already in my favs but it still says I can add them, which would make it difficult to remove favs.

You can remove them from the list page (where you're seeing the thumbnails) by selecting the "Remove From Favorites" mode from the Mode dropdown list.

On and off, I have been losing connection to the site. I first checked my own internet connection, and that's working fine. it took my 10 minutes to get this forum page up, and another 30 minutes to get the window of opportunity to post this comment. it is currently 4:00 PM Atlantic standard time.

seems the site went offline for a bit earlier. i think i was getting cloudflare errors (again >.>) and when i went to check at www.isitdownrightnow.com/ it said it was down for everyone.

for such a great site it sure is rather error prone.

I blame the shoddy-as-hell host.

looks like the site died for a minute or 2 again. i know it's been pretty slow loading pages today.

i'm trying upload a pic here. one with what looks to be udder-balls. lol

Updated by anonymous

Yup, site's still being slow as hell, so much for the performance upgrade -_-

Updated by anonymous

well, how many times are the servers gonna go down this time? i think it's 4-5+ times so far.

and so we meet again:

Getting lots of HTTP 522 CloudFlare timeouts lately, not lumped into any particular time of day, but happens throughout the day. It's not really a big issue since they always seem to be very temporary, i.e. hitting retry immediately can get me back in, but still. I'll update this posts with more info if I can find anything next time.

I'm also experiencing this. They're rare and unpredictable, but sometimes strike when I'm trying to post a comment or update tags, which results in me having to copy the entire field and then refresh the page to restore the post/submit button.

We are aware of an issue with our network provider that causes little two minute or so dropouts. We're working with them to resolve the issue.
