Topic: Rules regarding avatars?

Posted under General

Are there any rules regarding which image you can use as your avatar? Like, do you have to obtain permission from the artist first, or can you just use any uploaded image w/o strings attached? Or something else?

If it's on e621.net, feel free to use any post you want as avatar.
If you want to upload an image to use as avatar however, it's best to obtain permission and make sure it is allowed on e621 (e.g. a sufficient quality and relevance).

In the past, a post could only be the avatar of one user at a time.

I've seen people get banned for using an image featuring a particular character against the owner's wishes.

That only happens if a admin has to get involved, from the old rules(new rules page has no information on this): https://e621.net/wiki/show?title=e621%3Arules&version=35

(Avatars)

  • Do not upload tiny images just to use as avatars. Standard posting guidelines still apply. Images under 200x200 are seldom approved.
  • If you are using someone's fursona or a character they own as an avatar and they ask you to change it, for the love of god, change it! If the mods have to intervene, they aren't going to be happy.

Just change it once they request you to and you should be fine.

Are you sure about that? I've been here longer than the avatar system has and I have no memory of such a feature.

That won't happen anymore.

That never existed, no.

OK, before I get to the problem of using someones modified art as an avatar, can someone tell me how to install an avatar?
I've looked all over and can't find anything about creating an avatar...
I'm old, and new to the 'interweb', so answer slowly!

Edit; OK, now figured it's called a 'profile picture'?
So if I modify someones art, do I upload full size?

Bottom left corner of a post, underneath "options". It's the bottom-most link in that section.

For instance, https://e621.net/post/show/861532 near the bottom-left corner of the image is the options.

It's simple. Any image uploaded on this site CAN be used as an avatar... within certain restrictions. Uploading an avatar, however must be within site rules and or exceptions. ... If I assume correctly... Speaking of which... I need to update...

Wouldn't really make sense to use an avatar that's a flash animation, or a comic. But people have made those their avatars for one reason or another. That's just their personal choice.

A good reason for using flash/vid/comic avatars is so you'll be reminded of it every time you see your profile or comments, etc. If someone really liked that one joke made in ****, then they can make the post their avatar and reminiscence whenever they see it.
