According to my searches, Ashley originated as a man's name, not a woman's name. I suspect it was Americanization that made it "Feminine" to spite the British origins.

On topic: I find the Otherkin concept to be ridiculous for two reaons. Not quite, while a furry may in some cases like to think they identify as or strongly associate with a non-human, when asked if they believe they are really what they talk about most just go "nah, I just like to imagine and have fun".

Otherkin on the other hand are people who often literally identify as non-human, be it a real animal or fantasy being. Some are sort of sane in the same sense furries are sane, while other take it one step too far and try to make other people validate their claim of being an otherkin and hence should be treated differently and weird biological things about them that cannot be proved by anyone should be respected. Some otherkin also like to imagine that they have phantom limbs i.e. an otherkin with wings or tails may imagine that people automatically sway out of their way as to not to walk into their wings and that children and real non-humans can actually see them for what they imagine they are. They may also believe in multiverses and that their life is linked to another being in another universe, in order to explain their beliefs. etc.

In some cases otherkin is even considered a semi-religion, while furry is mainly just considered a hobby/fun. I'm usually quite respectful about other people's quirky beliefs but some of the otherkin beliefs are not quite sane.
