Topic: Question about changing artist tags

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Is it against the rules to change the artist tag of certain pictures to an updated name?

The artist of posts #950997 and #948021 (Wantonjion on Tumblr) asked me to change the artist tags to Wantonjion since since he wasn't aware that Detox is used by another artist. I'm wanting to know if changing the tag is okay or not.

I'm not sure why he chose to use the name Detox on e6, but that was his choice and I wasn't aware that was already an artist's name either.

Yes, it is OK, so long as you can point out the artist's source has a different name. If the artist goes by Wantonkion, then find their images and change the name to it.

Alright, thank you.

Those two pictures are on in his DeviantArt (kingjion.deviantart.com), I'll go change the tags and add the sources.

If they've got a ton of posts, try requesting an alias intead.

As far as I can see, it hasn't been used by an another artist.
It's been used as a general tag for a couple of posts (maybe for 'drug detox'), then got changed into an artist-type tag when Wantonjion started using it.

No, it's not okay.
If the artist has used both names, the tags should be aliased instead of just manually cleaned. Both for search- and tagging-purposes.

And that's where you can help, since I can't tell them anything about aliasing, because I don't know anything about the artist, or these posts. It sounded like there was literally only two posts that needed the update... What I do know is that both tags exist, and you can help them out with that information.

I was talking in the general sense.
Manually changing the artist tags is usually not okay. Since not everyone can be expected to be aware that the artist has changed their nick, and it'll only lead to further instances of duplicate artist tags and users not being able to find what they're looking for.

It's especially bad for Japanese nicks. I've seen several users using Google translate for those, but automatic tools rarely transliterate names right. That makes the tags hard to find if you only know the original nick. I've had to check the tag histories many times to track those down, and normal users cannot be expected to know how to do that.

So always alias the artist nicks, if at all possible.

It's probably not a good idea in this particular case though, since 'detox' can be tagged for other things.
