Topic: Looking for New Animes...

Posted under Off Topic

So does anyone have any anime suggestions. Right now I am watching Berserk, Tales of Zestiria the X, Taboo Tattoo, Regalia - The Three Sacred Stars, and Masou Gakuen HxH (the last one as kind of a joke because I heard it is "Soft Hentai" that wants to badly be Hentai).

Tossing out random suggestions rarely works well. Except for the must-see ones such as Cowboy Bebop.

What genres do you like, and which series (that you've seen so far) would you consider to be your favorites? That'd make it easier to give recommendations.

I am not the biggest anime fan, but I'd highly recommend the original Gundam series. There's a reason it's so hugely influential. Great series. Zeta Gundam is good too, but stay away from Gundam ZZ.

Another good one is Haruhi Suzumiya, but you might not be into that

Madoka Magica, Wolf's Rain, Cory in the House, Gurren Lagann, and Fooly Cooly are all pretty good picks.

Fooly Cooly <3 If only there were more.

Saw Kill-la-kill. Loved it...any anime that has a living uniform that transforms into an Ecchi-style bondage outfit when powered up has my vote.

Saw Cowboy Bebop a million times...own the Blu-ray box set of it too. Still one of my all time favorites, I even liked the movie Knocking On Heaven's Door though some people found it bland. As for what I like I am not opposed to fan service or harem comedies, but my real passion is for those "Fish Out of Water" type of shows where a character is thrust into a role they never expected...like No Game-No Life or KonoSuba. Also I totally dig ones with alternate historical time-lines like Strike Witches, The Ambition of Oda Nobuna, and Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere.

I really liked Gundam, and Gundam ZZ was one of the first ones I watched (its not all bad), but the newer stuff kind of turned me off. I don't know if it was the stories or the art style. The last one I watched completely was Gundam SEED. I have heard Mobile Suit Gundam 00 and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn were both good though.

BoBoBo-Bo Bo-BoBo is the best anime that would make you wonder what drug the creators were on when they were making it. It (sadly) doesn't air on TV anymore, but I'm pretty sure you can find it elsewhere pretty easily.

...uhm. Not the easiest list to work with. Maybe I should've also asked what you dislike.

But I'd suggest Durarara!!, Toaru Majutsu no Index, Fate/Zero, IS: Infinite Stratos, and Guilty Crown.

I second Durarara! and also want to add to that Bacanno!

Some of my favorite animes are Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Samurai Champloo, Trigun and Angel Beats! but it really does depend on what you like/don't like because there's a lot of good non-action anime, but they're not for everyone.

I just finished up Akagi and Kaiji and loved them. Straight fun, gripping, and crazy gambling. Tangentially, any manga by Fukumoto gets my +1

and a bit of sailor moon with the transformation sequences.

i've been checking some out on netflix lately. they have some pretty good ones to choose from. some short and some longer which i've seen before. forgot it's full name but the series based on the Berserk manga is interesting (still left wondering a few things about Guy and Griffon's relationship after watching it. o.O hmmm...). been watching The Seven Deadly Sins lately and it's pretty good. king arthur made an appearance...and is a VERY powerful swordsman clad in golden armor. there was another one too, something of the iron fortress i think?

and of course dragon ball super. seems trunks has returned from the future...and is stuck in the past this time. currently waiting for the mystery of just who Goku Black really is to be solved. well, hes not goku, and hes not a kai (despite having a time ring and one of the kai's earrings), so who or what could he really be? i doubt goku would turn evil like vegeta did way back in the start of the buu saga of DBZ.

Overlord and One Punch Man are good. If youre lookin for older anime Beck Mongolian Chop Squad and Black Lagoon. Also Gurren Lagann. Gurren Lagann is so good.

Even older, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell.

And if you just want a short mini series? The Japanese dub of Armitage III (The English movie featuring Kiefer Sutherland is a literally butchered and severely cut down version of the original lacking all the dramatic tension and nuance of the original ova.)

Updated by anonymous

Try The Big O. It got canceled before its 3rd season but my god it was literally Gundam meets batman meets Phoenix Wright. Like holy shit

Most of this list is kinda combat anime but still maybe some items you might find interesting.

Akame ga Kill is pretty good. While I am only half way through myself Heavy Object seems pretty good. I personally loved Code Geass and Chrome Shelled Regios.

Read or Die is a little older and maybe a little off to follow, been a while since I last watched it, but still alright I think. There is also Tokyo Ravens if your into modern day magic. Also Blue Exorcist for something a little demonic.

For major fan service and harem comedy there is High School DxD, first episode or 2 I think can also be counted as "fish out of water."

Sorry if you've already watched most of these. Just throwing some names out for ya.

Would anyone consider Panty & Stocking w/ Garterbelt an anime? 'Cause if so, I highly suggest watching that at least once.

I don't watch many anime, so I don't know a bookmark definition of what is and isn't one. Compared to a cartoon or animated film, the only difference I can think of is drawing styles and target audience...

Pretty much just any animation made in Japan. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt definitely counts, even though the animation style is somewhat uncommon.

The Boondocks would be a good example of series that isn't anime, since it's not Japanese.

now that is a good anime. i think they did the film noir thing quite well in Big O. or whichever sub-genre of "noir" it was. i'm not sure which it was exactly.

The two most recent things I watched were One Punch Man and Lesbian Bear Storm.

One Punch Man was pretty amusing. Lesbian Bear Storm... I'm in the minority on that one, apparently. I thought it was very well done, but most people don't seem to think so.

Admittedly, the first couple of episodes are quite different from the rest, but I mean, c'mon, Lesbian Bear Storm. How is it you need anything more than that name?

Also rewatched Digimon Tamers with a friend. Good series too.

Honestly I haven't seen anything I'd classify as bad recently.

Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are my favorites. Be sure to watch the first one before you watch Brotherhood. It's very important. I also like Ouran High School Host Club, Trigun, Death Note, Silver Spoon (so amazing), and Fairy Tail, among others. I watched Angel Beats! a long time ago, and I loved it, but haven't seen it since.

I am also extremely fond of Helsing Abridged. It's just so hilarious and well done.

It's not anime, but "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is my favorite show of all time. If you haven't seen it, then DO.

FMA and FMAB were so good. I liked how the original handles the beginning better. Esp the living with Should Tucker bit but FMA B was a far superior product

All great suggestions. Watched a few episodes of One Punch Man great fun. I have the boxed set of both Outlaw Star (had to have that Hot Springs episode!) and Angel Links it's pseudo spin-off. Loved Death Note, I even have all of the live action movies of it too. Trigun is up there with Cowboy Bebop on my faves list, still super bummed the MMO based on Trigun was cancelled though.

As for the "mainstream animes" like Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Inuyasha, Fairy Tail, and Dragonball I don't mind them. They do dumb down formula and you basically get your "Power Me Up" anime trope in spades, but that's not all bad in moderation (I haven't watched all of the episodes of any of them, but I have seen quite a few episodes of each one, enough to satisfy my power up anime itch).
I consider Panty & Stocking With Garterbelt an anime with western influence from something like Ren & Stimpy. I have a squishy Chuck plushy that makes farting noises when you squeeze it too hard.

Really great suggestions so far too.

Another question I'd like to pose: Are there any anime's out there that you felt ended before their time?

For me it was always Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, and Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere that left me wanting more.

The other reason for watching FA is because it really makes you love Maes Hughes. Brotherhood has much less to do with him.

spoiler

I've never been so sad from an anime. He's one of my most loved characters, and that really got to me.

But yeah, Brotherhood is definitely the better imagining.

And agreed Elfen lied is indeed messed up. While an arguably good anime those kids scare the everloving hell out of me.

The 2 I listed Chrome Shelled Regios and Tokyo Ravens I feel ended before their time. And despite some of the speculation another season for them seem quite unlikely. Though I do hope I am wrong.

And I can't quite remember but I think Soul Eater was another that ended rather soon too. But I can't quite recall though. Also on the foggy memory list is Dance in the Vampire Bund. Those could be complete though but I have a sense they are not and another season could come from them.

It's not so much that it ended too soon as it went completely off the rails towards the end.

I like the direction the manga took a lot more.

An objective of the antagonist is to collect a harem of each specious of female and treats them like property. Also the whole incest vibe going on. Not as bad as heavens lost property where the main character literally becomes their master and ties one of them up and rapes one, but it's getting there.

Thats it! Sorry its been like forever and a day since I last watched it so I was kinda foggy on the whole thing. Thanks for clearing that up.

(Probably going to go off rails here talking about anime hah)

Lol I like how you call one of the main characters the Antagonist. I don't doubt that may be something he wants but I'm sure Shiro will somehow prevent him. Also he doesn't seem to be active in creating a harem even though he has the ability to do so with the help of the ten pledges.

If your going to count Steph and Jibril Then bare in mind Jibril willingly became a servant to Shiro and Sora as all they wanted was her library. As for Steph Yes Sora made her fall in love with him, for the sake of getting all her stuff, Shiro points out that he did it in a stupid manner. And then as Jibril points out she was ordered to "fall in love" not "stay in love" which if you have an understanding of the pledges and someones wording when they make their bets, makes sense. (Yay Flügel)

About to explain the 1st episode

This is actually explained right in the first episode, Sora explains that their cash won't last long then draws a blank, Steph then assumes they want housing and money, which Sora makes no indication of yes or no, after the game Steph goes to make good on her bet except Sora points out he never asked for anything. So in short and simple he worded his bet just right so that his opponent would make the assumption of what he wants to make the game go through and gain what he wants no matter a tie or a win.

I was going to go on a whole tangent about Race Pieces right here but decided that would too much of a pain to do. But put simple a race without rights he could do what ever he wanted to them.

As for the Incest thing. Well its there and not there if you know what I mean.

So in short I disagree and kinda agree. Anyone else agree or disagree? Now that this had started I am actually curious what everyone thinks. I mean we're still on topic here right? Its about anime so ever so some what right?

I'm going to second this.

Also, I want to specify. Cromartie High is one of the few shows where the dub is better than the sub, by a large margin. Usually it's either about even either way (though I tend to prefer the sub)... but in this case, seriously, go with the dub.

Ugh, as far as sub versus dub goes in other animes, Dragon Ball Z gave Goku a retard voice. Not even just a dumb or stupid one, not one I don't like, but he actually sounds retarded. Only reason I even know this is because I watched One Piece on sub, but the crossover episode with Goku made me go get the dub for it.

But yeah, on Cromartie High, it's rich with the dub.

Baccano!
Yozakura Quartet
Psycho-Pass
The Monogatari series
The Kara no Kyoukai series
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

and then you got your classics, you know

Drake & Josh
Thomas the Tank Engine (skip the English dub its shit)
The Cable Guy with Jim Carrey
Stuart Little

but those are pretty popular, so i'm probably preaching to the choir

Hm. Based on that, plus FLCL and your previous list, I have a few more suggestions. I don't usually recommend these, but seems like you've already seen plenty of anime, and might be interested something less mainstream.

Mirai Nikki, The Tatami Galaxy, and Steins;Gate.

Small bump.

Fish out of water + alternative historical

  • Nobunaga Concerto

Fish out of water + historical alternate dimension

  • Kyou kara Maou!

Fish out of water, mostly

  • Dai-guard

"Ended before their time", interpreted as "incomplete/unfinished story" and qualified with yearning the anime would have been continued.

  • Space Brothers
  • Berserk
  • Claymore
  • Saiunkoku Monogatari
  • Kingdom
  • Ghost Hunt

I've seen all of these and liked them more than a bit, with the exception of Space Brothers which had worn me down by the end.

And, for what it's worth, a screenshot of all the anime I've watched and liked more than I didn't like, proceeding the failure of my data HDD that contained every anime I've seen since I started watching it.

Currently watching Mugen no Ryvius.

i saw a movie from that series on netflix (Berserk: The Egg of the King) and it was pretty good though tbh, the way Guts and Griffith acted around each other throughout the show left me rather curious about their relationship towards each other by the end. it left me wondering if, to some extent, the relationship might be along the lines of yaoi or something. it was a good show though, nice artwork and all.
