is there a way to follow or subscribe to certain creators?

I believe there is, but you need to become a privileged user.

I think the feature is still broken. My subscriptions show the latest images from October 24.

Best way to do this as a user is to use the RSS/Atom feature and create a tag list with ~artist1 ~artist2 ~artist3 ~artist4 and have it refresh every 45-60 minutes or so.

Step 1: Get https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/ or some sort of feed reader
Step 2: Add https://e621.net/post/atom?tags=rating:s+hyena as a feed(replacing "rating:s+hyena" with what ever you want
Step 3: PLS CHANGE REFRESH RATE, chances are they won't have a post every minute. I keep a refresh rate of every 3 hours for automated e621 queries. You may not think it puts much load on your computer/internet, but the server does not cache this, please think of the poor server. D:

and how do you become that?

do like 10k+ good tag edits, upload whole bunch of good quality stuff, report rule breakers and help people.

Tag subscriptions don't even work right now, so aiming for those, which are priv+, likely isn't the right goal. The atom feeds are closer to what you're looking for.

Do the mods keep track of tagging/uploading activity, or do you have to draw their attention to get an account upgrade? I don't hang out on the IRC...

I only hang out on the IRC to occasionally ask "Hey does this look masculine, isn't this a cub, this one looks mature, what kind of position is this?"

I honestly don't think they really notice it. Plus, even if they do, there's still thousands of users who probably work hard, but never get noticed because they're one in a thousand. So really, it's probably only the ones who actually talk about the work they do.
