Topic: Good games featuring animal characters?

Posted under Off Topic

I recently got done finishing stories: path of destinies, and the story was really good. And so, I wanna play more. can anybody recommend any games featuring animal/anthro characters? I only ask that you don't say some really obvious ones like crash bandicoot or Jak and Daxter etc etc, but some lesser known gems like Dust: an Elysian Tale or Ori and the Blind Forest. Games that are really story driven are the best imo.

Klonoa, Cave Story, Undertale

If I play games, characters being anthromorphic may increase my initial interest towards game, but in the end I'm pretty sure it doesn't end up enhancing or decreasing overall enjoyment of the game itself for me. Meaning I maybe wouln't go my way to specifically find games with anthros, but just look up some really good games and play first the one which has anthros.

Also for some reason I feel like Dust and Ori and the blind forest aren't exactly lesser known, if you actually take a look at digital storefronts. Majority of my steam and playstation friendlist at least owns dust and most of those have at least opened the game.

In any case, from the top of my mind:
- Rhythm Paradise/Heaven
- Solatorobo
- Ökami
- Legend of Kay
- Ty the tasmanian tiger
- Ruff Trigger (have physical disc there but actually never played this one)
- Jolly Rover
- Gravity badgers (apparently really bad game)
- Dillon's Rolling Western
- Armello
- Aviary Attorney (haven't played yet)

With Mario's Armello: here are some tips on the game. Trust me, you'll want these... the game is brutal if you are inexperienced.

As for myself, Dark Cloud 2. It is expensive as fuck if you don't purchase it digitally, but the story is great and revolves more around Moon People, a race of lagomorphs from the moons, than its predecessor Dark Cloud 1. The two main characters are human, though, as is the initial story.

I was gonna rec stories and solarobo but your icon and op suggest those may not be good suggestions. Jokes aside. Cave story has fuzzy loveable critters.

I agree on Dillon however. Cute premise. Fun game.

I have some others in mind but the names arent coming atm. Ill post abt them later.

I bought that game used for maybe 5 dollars a couple years back. Is it really that expensive?

It goes for about 100$+ on amazon or etc., but if you get it from GameStop it'll be cheap.

If it works. GameStop has sold me non-functioning games twice.

- They sold me a demo cart of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, presumably stolen from a store and traded into them.

- They sold me a badly scratched disk of Dark Cloud 2 that wouldn't run.

The first I turned in immediately, the second I failed to because I wasn't sure if it was the disc or my early-model, disk read error-prone PS2.

I once got FFX from them, and returned it because it was too scratched. They said the receipt was fake so I had to trade it in and buy another one. This also means they would have just sold it to someone else and did the same thing.

I actually own dark cloud 2, I should definitely go and play it soon, It's always really hard to get into for some reason. Maybe this time I'll finish it.

What hasn't been mentioned yet, lemme think...

Night in the Woods
Can't get more anthro than this.

Princess Remedy in a World of Hurt
...okay, there's not that many animal characters and they're all NPCs, but it's a short fun free game. No reason not to play it.

Divinity: Dragon Commander
Genre mishmash of politics sim / turn-based strategy / real-time strategy. With an overarching storyline. Lizards are one of the main species in the setting; you got one as an advisor, etc. And the protagonist is a dragon.

Pizza Express
Competent Papa's Pizzeria style game, with anthros and a semi-random story. Don't let the graphics spook you off, it's actually pretty fun.

Shovel Knight
Some of the NPCs are anthros. Not many, but it's a game that anyone should play regardless.

...and anything by Tilde-One Games, though those tend to get somewhat grimdark at times. I miss the Sunrise in particular is worth a look.

Zero Escape: Virtue's last Reward for the 3DS (and PS Vita...) has a white rabbit AI by the name of Zero_III. And all three games in the Zero Escape Series (which you can play if you have a 3DS), are masterful visual novel games that have won their share of story-based awards.

Sounds like a reference to Usami/Monomi from Dangan Ranpa 2. Or maybe it's the other way around?

theres shining force games. they usually have a good number of anthros.

wow, no one mentioned the elder scrolls games yet? kajhiit (ugh, spellcheck please? i always manage to forget the spelling of that one) and argonians. i would suggest skyrim if you want the best graphics though.

sonic the hedgehog...whole franchise pretty much.

hmmm... wasn't there a game based on usagi yojimbo for pc? or did that end up being cancelled? i haven't checked it out for a long time so i'm not sure.

Updated by anonymous

guild wars 2. the main game is free to play and you can play as charr (massive semi-anthro felines with cool horns). its a mmorpg but the story and lore is really good.

Updated by anonymous

Archeage. It's also an MMO. One of the races is the Firran, who are basically anthro lions. My main is a Firran.

Updated by anonymous

How prominently do they need to feature? Like does Gryz from Phantasy Star IV count? Or Chrono Trigger/Cross' animal people? Or the centaurs and werewolf and others from Shining Force I/II? And are we talking just RPGs? Like what about Brutal: Paws of Fury?

Updated by anonymous

FFX has Kimari. FFVII has Red XIII. FFXII has the Viera, Bangaa, Seeq, and Nu Mou.

Updated by anonymous

Legend of Spyro Dawn of the Dragon, Conker's bad fur day and Starfox Adventures. Not many I can think of especially story wise.

Updated by anonymous

Oh, apparently Shantae hasn't been recommended? Shantae herself isn't much of an animal beyond the "Elven" half-genie trait, but outside of The Pirate's Curse she transforms into animals to give her additional powers. Plenty of eye candy among the monsters, too. Majority take the form of humanoid (or half-humanoid) monster girls.

Updated by anonymous

Oh hey, I have something to add here.

IF you like, try out Odin Sphere. The game has an adorable (cursed) race called the Pooka.

You actually play as one of them for one of the campaigns: Cornelius.

How has nobody mentioned Freedom Planet yet? Granted, it might not be a "hidden gem" per se, but I wouldn't say it's mainstream either. Simply put, it's a lot like classic Sonic games with the option to play a "Story mode" or straight through the levels in "Classic mode". Besides being on Steam, you can also get it on the digital markets for PS4 and Wii U. I'd say it's worth the price tag.

Next, there's Major/Minor on Steam. Can't say I'd recommend it, though. The story is pretty sluggish and convoluted, there's very few choices despite being told "you have the power to change reality", and the character's are all really basic and uninteresting. But, it's got anthros, so maybe you'll like it. If you do get it, be sure to pick it up on sale so it doesn't hurt as much if it disappoints.

HuniePop has a semi-anthro character named "Momo" and an alien named "Celeste". Their both unlockable characters that you have to trigger at certain times and places, but I was pleasantly surprised at their inclusion. HuniePop itself is a puzzle/dating sim game that's awesome in a weird way. Full disclosure: it will suck your life away if you let it. However, it has does have an end goal with infinite post-game content and features mostly human characters (except for a fairy, a goddess, and the aforementioned cat and alien). Not particularly story-heavy, but fun nonetheless.

This next one is more obvious than the others, but still needs at least to be honorably mentioned for it's influence on indie games in recent history. I'm of course referring to the Five Nights at Freddy's series. I'm fairly certain you already know everything that needs to be said about it, so I'll leave it at that.

There's also Bloody Trapland on Steam which is rage platformer. Prepare to die, a lot. It has color-coded... cats... I think? Anyways, they behave like Mario, except everything kills you and there's no power-ups. It also supports online co-op play, which I think is pretty neat.

Next is Ultimate Chicken Horse on Steam. It's a competitive platformer with farm animals. I haven't played it personally yet, but I've seen Let's Plays and it seems pretty fun if you're playing with the right people. The platforming comes in when you arrange platforms and obstacles to help yourself get across while preventing other players from reaching the goal too. It's simple, but fun.

This next suggestion's a bit weird and technically features a feral avatar rather than any anthropomorphic characters. It's name is Pony Island, but don't let the name fool you, it's a pretty decent game with an interesting story. It, like Undertale, more-or-less deconstructs conventional narrative tropes over the duration of the experience. It's pretty short, but worth the price tag IMO.

Lastly, it hasn't been mentioned, but it's also pretty mainstream (or, at least, it used to be). There's Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie originally released on the Nintendo 64. They have ports on the Xbox 360 for sure and perhaps the Xbox One (although I'm not sure about the latter). They're very well-made 3D platformers along the lines of Super Mario 64, but better in pretty much every regard in my opinion.

That's really the only ones that I can think of at the moment of the ones that haven't been mentioned yet.

this one and especially the dev of it, iirc, have a pretty bad reputation (theres another thread about this game here somewhere i think.). probably not worth messing with.

can probably expect the fan game megaman x: corrupted to feature some anthro bosses too since that's usually how the MMX games go.

edit: ah, heres that Major/Minor thread i mentioned.

Solatorobo is worth a second mention.
It was released relatively late in Nintendo DS development, and got overlooked by many. Definitely worth a look if you like ARPGs.

And plenty of old turn-based JRPGs have anthro characters. Breath of Fire, Suikoden, etc. Still worth playing, if you can overlook the graphics.

Come to think about it, the Megaten games might qualify. Most games have plenty of animal demons to summon and chat with. Though I suppose those aren't 'hidden gems' anymore, not after how popular the Persona series has become.

that reminds me of... doesn't that take place in the same universe as tail concerto? which is also a good game with almost no humans anywhere (largely cats and dogs of various breeds but other creatures too).

Depending on your tolerance for bullshit: Blinx: The Time Sweeper. The original one. It's a fun game with a cool premise, but it has issues telling the difference between difficulty and frustration. It's an original Xbox game, and it's 360 back-compat!

Ratchet and Clank. All of them. You play as a Lombax (essentially an anthropomorphic feline). The humor is amazing. Also, said Lombax is voiced by James Arnold Taylor, and anything he's in that isn't Johnny Test is good in my book.

I already said I wouldn't recommend it, but I still mentioned it anyways. I know it doesn't have the best reputation, although I've never been clear on why. Probably because I never finished it and sorely regret buying it even on sale. My experience with it has pretty much turned me off the visual novel genre. Katawa Shoujo has helped me get back on it. Shoujo isn't furry related though.

Yep. It's going to be a spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie since Rare (under Microsoft) still owns the IP. Yooka-Laylee was crowdfunded via Kickstarter and is being released on April 11, 2017. It will be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One. There was originally going to be a Wii U version, but it was cancelled due to technical difficulties. A Nintendo Switch version is expected to take the place of the Wii U version. It looks promising and I'm eager for it to be released. Hopefully it lives up to its predecessor.

Why not Crash Banticoot? He is the legend. But i know only him and another game is Sly Cooper. It is a bit old game, i think for ps2 where you play as raccon and are in group with hippo and turtle and you fight bad guys. Other games i don't know, because i don't play that much kind of games.

I remember Fur Fighters on PC. Play as animals, shoot other animals with guns. Game of the 2000's, in my opinion it was pretty good because of the humor.

Updated by anonymous

I've thought of a few more, but they contain relatively few anthro or furry main characters.

There's the Blazblue series which has a feline combatant named Taokaka. She's shrouded in a thick coat, but has a tail, claws, and very cat-like personality. She's not in every game, but she is a main character in that universe. Personally, she's also one of my favorites.

Then there's the Soul Calibur series which routinely features guest fighters from other franchises, like Link in Soul Calibur II for the Gamecube and Darth Vader from Star Wars in Soul Calibur IV for the PS3. The only anthro character I'm aware of in that series is the Lizardman. He's decent enough, I suppose, if a bit slow.

I also feel like Goat Simulator is worth mentioning. Simply put, you play as a "normal" goat in a sandbox environment. The game is glitchy as f*ck, but is capable of producing a few laughs. There's DLC available for it that parodies various triple-A games and genres including Payday, Star Wars, Grand Theft Auto, Zombie games, and so on. In my opinion, it's much better with a friend, but I thought is worth the small price tag either way.

I've also tried out the demo for a platformer game called Blade Kitten. I can't say much about it because I haven't played further than the demo yet, but it's pretty fun. It has some neat cel-shaded graphics and has a decent story (from what I saw). The controls are also pretty neat. The main character is a semi-anthro catgirl named Kit Ballard.

Next, this franchise's a bit more well-known but suitable for any furry fan. Animal Crossing is a title published by Nintendo and centers on a small town populated by anthropomorphic animals. There's no real story to it beyond what you make and it's the sort of game that takes some time getting into. You spend most your days catching bugs, collecting fruit, and fishing to sell those expendable items to the local store so you can buy more stuff for your home. It's a nice, relaxing game that only really takes up about half an hour of your time per day. I'd recommend it solely for the fact that the town's resident are all so adorable. My favorite's Freya followed closely by Sable Able, though.

Finally, here's a link for other games containing anthro characters. That's not a complete list, of course, but it's a start.

I'd just like to add that the glitches are actually listed as features on the store page. I don't mean it like "It's not a bug. It's a feature." I mean three of the game's listed features are:

"MILLIONS OF BUGS! We're only eliminating the crash-bugs, everything else is hilarious and we're keeping it"

"In-game physics that bug out all the time"

"Seriously look at that goat's neck"

I think my fondest memory of Goat Simulator is trying to compete in a bike riding contest with a friend. His bike completely glitched out (as in it disappeared through the floor) and he kept trying to steal mine. Like I said, the glitches are weird, funny, and all over the place. I believe the game benefits of playing the minor bugs for laughs. I haven't encountered anything "game-breaking", but I have gotten stuck in walls more times than I can count. It's the sort of game I recommend with co-op mode.
