Topic: Reminder: All paid content under 2 years old is DNP (including dojinshi and other comics)

Posted under General

I know there has been some confusion over doujinshi comics and whether they are still considered DNP under the 2 year rule. This post is intended to be a reminder that all paid content under 2 years old is considered DNP, and this includes paid doujinshi and other comics. The posting rules related to DNP still apply.

Some reminders:

  • If you find that you have posted DNP, flag it for removal as soon as possible. If you flag your own post, we will not issue a record for it.
  • Posts that have been approved for longer than 2-3 weeks will not get a record for posting DNP, but they will still be deleted if found.
  • Even if you don't know the artist/comic name, you are still accountable for uploading it. Likewise I'd recommend being extremely cautious if you upload things from sites like hitomi.la, g.e-hentai, u18chan, etc. as a lot of the stuff posted to these types of sites will fall under the 2 year rule.
  • This isn't a rule, but it helps us a lot if you include proof that it's paid content. A comment on the first post of a pool or in the description field of the pool itself is where we will look first.
Tips on locating doujishi sources, and publishing dates

If you know the artist/comic name:

  • Try their known accounts or places other people have sourced to to see if it was posted there. Occasionally you can find the comic name here as well.
  • Doujinshi artists tend to go under several names. For instance on various image boards, the artist Kawai Takahiro may be tagged as aoi, aoi_takayuki, biter, flash_point, takahiro kawai, or mixed up with other artists, name of the comic, etc. (I’ve even seen the genre or bits of dialogue end up getting tagged as the artist!). Trying other known names will often give you more clues.
  • Search google for artistname site:doujinshi.org or comicname site:doujinshi.org - Doujinshi.org is a very good resource for finding a lot of information about artists and doujin works, however the search built into their site is fairly hit or miss so I usually just have google search it.
    • Searching google for artistname doujinshi or comicname doujinshi can work sometimes.

If you don’t know the artist/comic name:

  • Put the front cover page into http://saucenao.com/. It’s common for pixiv artists to upload the cover page (as well as a few sample pages) to their pixiv account, and saucenao can often provide information long after they are deleted.
  • Google reverse image search can help to find sources but it can be hit or miss as it doesn’t work very well for things that were posted to some sites like pixiv, inkbunny, or furaffinity.
  • The publishing date can sometimes be found in first few or last few pages. Example - this page has the date, romanized artist names, as well as a couple URLs.

In addition, feel free to send me a dmail or ask the forums if you need help finding a source.

Restoring old posts:

Previously deleted paid content that is past the 2 year mark may be restored by sending a request to one of the mods. It helps if you have proof that the work is older than this, but as a general rule if it's been uploaded to e6 for longer than 2 years, restoring it should not be an issue (this is all assuming that the artist isn't on the avoid posting list).

Jut wanna poke my head in and mention Patreon, seen some stuff being posted from there recently even though the artist hadn't released the content to the public yet.

IIRC Patreon is treated differently from the normal two yer rule.
If it's only been shared with the Patreon supporters, the normal rule applies.
If it's been posted publicly by the artist, it's free to upload on here as well.

Here's a question.

What happens to the posts on this website that are deleted? I recall you once mentioning that most of the deleted posts (outside of the smaller/inferior versions) are trollish and god awful.

IIRC (again) obvious non-furry trolling images like real gore, cp, scat and the likes are permanently deleted from the database. The rest stays as deleted posts.

What about Patreon content that is larger versions of images the artist has publicly posted?

Posts that are illegal to possess, like CP, are "destroyed" (i.e., e621 jargon for "deleted from the database"). Not sure about highly distasteful posts like RL gore. As a matter of good practice, I would expect e621 to also destroy posts containing malware.

All other posts with the deleted thumbnail are "deleted" (i.e., e621 jargon for "public access removed, but still stored in the database"). Admins are trusted to responsibly review these posts and potentially restore public access to them.

Dogenzaka said:

If the larger version is paysite content, which includes Patreon donation paywalls, but the smaller version is publicly available, then I'd expect the larger version to be hidden if it were posted to e621. The difficulty, of course, is identifying those hi-res posts as paysite content and not just superior uploads.

The ADMIN gave, and the ADMIN hath taken away; blessed be the name of the ADMIN (e 6-21).

Regarding doujinshi: Comiket is always held on December 29-31 for winter, and on the second weekend of August for summer.

So it might be a good idea to check the deleted pools around those dates.

They aren't actually treated differently, abadbird is correct here. If the artist releases a low res image to the public, that version of the image is okay to post. If the artist puts a larger image behind even a small paywall (Patreon or otherwise) it is considered paid content. However Patreon tends to function slightly differently as it's common for artists to give "early access" as a perk, but will often release it publicly a month later (which essentially cancels the 2 year rule since it's no longer behind a paywall).

abadbird said:

Not always easy to figure out. Sometimes it's as simple as "they only post to FA and Patreon" (FA doesn't let you upload higher res images very easily), but occasionally I've actually had to send a quick note to the artist about it. Fortunately they are (usually) quick to respond.

Fun question, and abadbird is once again correct here. The vast majority of these are still on the servers, and are simply not accessible to regular users. Here's an example of what we see.

Since destroyed posts aren't even accessible by admins, it's rarely done unless there is a very good reason to do so (I've yet to run into a post that needed to be destroyed). Keeping them also allows us retain a record of past behavior, which can be useful for repeat offenders and ban evaders.

If you're curious, you can actually see yourself how often posts are destroyed on this page. If you'll notice, that's less than 70 posts destroyed in the last 4 years, and the oldest few of those are likely just for testing the system.

The ADMIN gave, and the ADMIN hath taken away; blessed be the name of the ADMIN (e 6-21).

FA does allow the upload of high-res files but you need to upload the the image normally, then change the submission file on the uploaded post, as that will circumvent the auto resizing.
(This is also often the reason why people write "F5 for big version!" under their submissions.)

I always thought it was a requirement, looking at the submission form though, it specifies how to upload larger versions. So idk, maybe the limitation is in place to save space?

I've always wondered about this. It was kinda odd seeing some people complaining about FA's resizing, and then seeing people with 4000x3000 images uploaded.

It was likely easier to change the text on the page than it was to change the actual code used for uploading.

Well, there are two types of resizing, one is the thing described above, the other is that all new accounts are set to only show a tiny preview image, instead of the full size, which is also something many people don't know about because that option is horrible to find.

If dozens or hundreds of uploads get batch undeleted they should be posted about here.

At least with the beta UI, extra large images fit to your screen instead of going off the right side of the page, so that's good.

There's a big chunk of posts that will be undeleted in here and here, but they are going to take a while to go through. If you want I can try to make a sort of "changelog" of undeletions to post here periodically.

Thinking about it now, why are the covers/preview images for pay content deleted? As pointed out, these are made public by the artists themselves in an attempt to advertise and can usually be easily searched if the artist uploads to a website that can be searched via SauceNAO.

It'd be nice if they were left up and places where the content can be purchased were linked to as well as wherever the artist made those images available from.

We generally leave them up if we know that they are teaser pages.

If we don't know that they get deleted, and I for one have seldom time to go try and reverser search all pages to check if they are a teaser or not.

So, if you know of some which are teaser images say so and we either don't delete them in the first place, or restore them.

I tend to check the first couple pages to see if there is a source already linked, but I'll try make more of an effort to reverse search the cover page to see if they have any teaser pages we can leave up. As NMNY has stated already, it's not always feasible time-wise for us to try and look for these, but if you know of any it should be no problem to restore them.

That one's kind of tricky with doujinshi; from what I've gathered they are often sold for a short period of time, and then only through 3rd party sellers. I'm not very familiar with where these things are bought online, but I'd definitely encourage including an official link if you happen to have one.

Here's couple of largest sites:

AliceBooks for new doujin, Mandarake for used. But bear in mind that most doujin are extremely rare, good ones rarely end up being sold to Mandarake, and thousands of other users are browsing it for potential finds. So good luck with that..

And some Circles don't allow shipping overseas, mostly because foreigners have got reputation for scanning doujin and putting them online. So even if it's on AliceBooks, you might not be able to buy it.

Alright, as promised here's what I've undeleted so far:

pools

Only down for a couple weeks, but are restored now:

furafterdark:
Blotch:

Misc:

Until I'm able to catch up with the several years of backlog, the updates will be somewhat irregular, but I'm considering doing one of these every couple months or so to keep you guys informed.

If there's any paid content past the 2 year mark that was deleted, feel free to let me know. Usually it isn't a problem, but if for some reason I can't restore them, I will do my best to explain why (it's usually related to takedowns).

Palcomix often does this after a time and those are fine to post regardless of the 2 year rule. If you know that it has already be posted to here you can also request it be undeleted (either here or just shoot me a PM).

Note that some of the older Palcomix comics have actually had takedowns on them in the past and might still be deleted because of it. Also, if a high res version is paid content then that is still considered DNP (even if the lower res is free and fine to post).

First of all it is your fault you got into trouble over dnp content, not the admin. It says how to avoid this in the posting guidelines.
Parasprite even said not to post links to content under two years old or dnp.. *facepalms*

This "strict rule" is in place becuse posting pay content under two years old can cause disasterus backlash if the artist takes serious offence and goes to court over it.

Your taking money out of the artists pocket by posting pay content, if I posted something that I put hours of hard work into and then sold it only to have some prick take it an post it to an image dump where everyone can see it...you bet i'd take the site and the poster to court.

It has nothing to do with the admin being unfriendly and everything to do with protecting the site from being shut down or attacked.

Look... I'm a user just like you. I have no power here however the fact remains that the dnp list is there for a reason. Namely the artists on the list have told the site admin that they do not want their artwork posted to other sites.

As for pay content under two years.
This is like, for example, if you made something and then sold this something for money which you need to live and someone takes that something and then copies it and starts handing out these free copy. That's theft.

Both of these can get the site into legal trouble, it can also drive users and content creators away much easier than being strict.

We're normally a bit lenient about links as long as it isn't directly to paid content that's DNP, but in a context such as this thread it's better if we avoid links like this. I've left the rest of the discussion up and discussion can continue as long as it remains civil in here.

We do not need to talk about this anymore.

Thanks for restoring one of my doujinshi that we're deleted for being an paid content under 2 year old.

Also pool #5948. :P

Technically they are both August 11, 2013, but I'm going to be kind of busy over the weekend so I went ahead and undeleted them a few days early.

I presume it's because many are still being sold (see alice-books.com, for instance), and it'd be hard to figure out which were completely sold out and which weren't.

So, if I may, why exactly is doujinshi DNP after the initial convention where it was sold? The artist isn't making money off the work anymore, as they stop selling it, so what exactly is the issue?

Also, it there IS some reason why not to post it, why is there an arbitrary 2 year line in the sand?

The 2 year mark is to keep the site from being a bastion of pirated content, to allow artists a head start to make money from the work they create (yes you can usually find it elsewhere, but it really doesn't help to have yet another community that doesn't care about that), and allow for older works that are "abandoned" to be archived. Doujinshi aren't handled any different than other content, they just have a slightly different culture surrounding their release. We could handle them differently if we wanted to, but defining "what is doujinshi and what is not doujinshi" isn't really a topic we feel is worth the trouble of getting into.

The 2 year mark also likely helps us from being an art dump right after events like Comiket, which might overwhelm both taggers (take it from experience, tagging several poorly tagged comic pools with 30+ pages is not easy work) and anybody who uses the search during that time (who have to deal with untagged pools).

This is also part of it. We have had a few takedowns for doujinshi in the past, but that number would likely be higher if it wasn't for the language/cultural barrier. It's also not always easy to find the source of a particular comic. :/

Some comics like Softpaw remain DNP because retailers are still selling them, but for most the 2 year mark at least gives a decent (even if arbitrary) amount of time to let the sales/hype surrounding the release to die down.

I've recently noticed that a fair amount of users are inadvertently uploading paywall works by artists that aren't on the Avoid Posting list. With the advent of Patreon, this seems to be more common of a pitfall. Especially since the images are publicly available, but only Patreons can receive uncensored (1) (2), hi-res (1) (2), or other variants of the same image.

It is very important to provide a source that matches the image in your upload. Avoid using 3rd-party sources like imageboards (except drawthreads).

is pool #7813 paid content? and if so, is it past the 2 year mark? it's a comic by mongo bongo with dirtycomic.org's site name stuck in the lower right corner of each pic and also, if you check the corners (it's hard to see as the coloring is dark for it) theres mongo bongo's name and site link below it. i'll go ahead and change the artist tag on this pool of pics now.

pool is also tagged source_request

Reverse google image search: http://mongobongoart.blogspot.fi/2012/11/wonder-woman-hades.html
November 13, 2012. And most definitely downscaled, recompressed and watermarked by third party site.
