Topic: [Feature] Automated explanatory dmails first n times a post is deleted

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Requested feature overview description.
Send users an automated explanatory dmail the first n times one of their posts is deleted. Dmail should contain the deletion reason and an explanation of the reason, how to avoid it in the future, etc.

Ideally, different deletion reasons would be handled separately. That way, for example, someone who has had several posts deleted for irrelevancy would still be contacted on their first 'does not meet minimum quality'. Also, uploader requested removals shouldn't trigger a dmail.

Why would it be useful?
Reduce staff work load a little. Make site less confusing/frustrating for new uploaders (thus retaining more of them since some will give up rather than ask what they are doing wrong).

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?
Post deletion process

I could see this cutting down the number of forum posts we get about "what do minimum quality standards mean?", and "where did my posts go?", and the like. Seems reasonable to me.

While it may seem to be a stretch to ask this, perhaps we shouldn't make it automated. Working in a call center environment, I know how much customers appreciate a one-on-one experience. It should be the same way here (except for obivous troll posts). I know I would've appreciated a personal message from the deleter of my first post with something explaining why my post was deleted.

It's not like this would be a regular occurance. If the e621 administration panel has some kind of "user notes" section (like the records tool, but for internal usage only), then admins could leave a note for the other admins saying that this user had already had the upload guidelines explained to them. They could also leave a note telling other admins not do it again unless under special circumstances.

Or maybe just make [deleted] thumbnails visible in recent uploads on user's profile page.
As it stands now, deleted posts literally disappear.

I've kind of taken the liberty of dmailing users about posts that were flagged for deletion whenever I see it, but since I do have a full-time job and other things to do in my life, I can't catch 'em all.

Dmail template I use (for complete transparency)

Hey!

Just to give you a heads up in case you weren't already aware, one of you photos were marked for deletion by another user.
[artist] is on the Do-Not-Post list (or most commonly reffered to as the DNP). Since someone already flagged it for deletion, you can not flag it yourself and avoid a possible neutral record. If it's not a regular occurance that you upload DNP works, then you most likely won't have anything to worry about it.

Before posting an artist's works, check here to make sure they're not on the DNP:

Thanks!

Go click on (in your case) deleted posts to see all posts under you that have been deleted. This gives the exact reason why it was deleted & post ID.

And every new user has to figure it out somehow, because the only thing they may notice it that their posts are missing. Few will notice the change in a tiny number in their stats (one in like a dozen posted there) because it's not highlighted anyhow. Even less will realize it's clickable. That's why they come asking.

There's no indication that something has happened.

DMail is one way to notify the user, but I think it's a bit overboard. Users who have uploaded anything should be aware of their own profile page, and that's where they will go to check their uploads. So it would be less intrusive than a PM, but still effective.

There are way too many things that need to be deleted to explain each and every one personally.

Genjar

Former Staff

It absolutely would be a regular occurrence. Almost every single uploader has had some posts deleted at some point. Over 15000 users.

Furrin is right. The staff has better things to do than send out dozens of mails every day, especially when the users are expected to already know those rules.

So cutting them loose and letting other people fix their problems is the solution? I mean, I'm willing to help these people out, but I feel like this could be a great first line-of defense for first-time uploaders. I honestly DGAF about people who have had 10+ deleted pictures because they're failed to take a hint from users/admins (like myself, but not. I've tried to follow the uploading guidelines, hence why I've stopped uploading my own art.)

I'm with Genjar, most of the time issue with deletion is something that linking user into correct section of uploading guidelines makes them go "oh, ok"

I could see this kind of dmail system helping with it, but with precentage of users that get confused about their deleted posts I don't see much point. Most of the time deletion reason is explained in way that should make sense for reasoning of deletion. If they upload something againts the rules they will get notified anyway.

I do not see harm if it's something semi automatic, that it's promped if you are about to delete users upload with low amount of deletions and selecting reasonings, but actually making and implementing the system sounds like it's almost better off just explaining things when and if users ask about their deletions via dmail. Also majority of time the users get confused with deletion is the quality standard deletion and that would require explaining stuff manually most of the time anyway.
