Topic: [Feature] Automatic corrections and suggestions on direct uploads

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Requested feature overview description.
Let's say user is trying to use direct upload with Inkbunny image, they insert https://il.ib.metapix.net/files/screen/XXX/XXXXXXX_Artist_Title.png
Of course this is inkunnys preview image, meaning that this post needs to get replaced with higher quality original one.

As proper image is stored in almost identical url, simply automatically changing the /screen/ to /full/ would make the post upload highest quality directly without hasshle. As many other sites do have similar ways of handling previews, includes tumblr and twitter, this would cut down extra work insanely with something that sounds on paper to be really minor thing to automate.

If this is done, user should be notified that their link was incorrect, that it was altered to get best quality and that they should in future take this into account maybe even with link to instructions.

Could also include warning when user is uploading from e.g. furaffinity, url stating the file to be png, but site correcting it to jpg, that they should double check for higher quality version as that's also sites generated preview, but furaffinity does not store original files at that point.

Also if uploaded from sites where it's impossible to get submission url from direct url and user leaves sources empty, notify them to add it in.

Why would it be useful?
I know this is idiotproofing, but I have also seen this happen to the best. This would cut down also their accidents from piling into their deletions count, as well as cut down unnecessary work which comes from handling same posts twice, possibly even with users getting offended that their uploads are being stolen etc.

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?
Direct URL uploading.

Updated

It's a good idea, but at least for Tumblr, it won't always work.
Some tumblr images don't have a 1280 version.
On others, the 500 or 540 version is animated, but the higher resolutions aren't.

Can you give example? I do not think I have ever encountered this one.
Gifs I was aware of so those could easily be simply excluded, videos are always MP4 so they can't be uploaded with direct URL to begin with.

Bumping and also list of automatic changes needed:

Tumblr
Replace 75, 100, 250, 400 or 500 into 1280 at the end of URL. Only do for JPG and PNG files.
Result: http://`*`media.tumblr.com/`*`_1280.`xxx`

Inkbunny
Replace /screen/ or /preview/ with /full/.
Result: https://`*`ib.metapix.net/files/full/`XXXX`/`*_artist_filename`.`XXX`

Twitter
Add in :orig in the end of URL.
Result: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/`*`.`XXX`:orig

Pixiv
The urls for preview and original seems to have same components in them, but I'm not certain is it possible to automatically alter the url to get the original image. However if URL contains img-master, prevent the upload.
Result: https://i.pximg.net/img-original/img/`YYYY`/`MM`/`DD`/`HH`/`MM`/`SS`/`*`_p0.png

FurryNetwork
Remove the forward slash and resolution (e.g. /2500x1500.jpg) at the end of URL.
Result: https://`*`.cloudfront.net/`XX`/`Artist`/submission/`YYYY`/`XX`/`*`.jpg

it doesnt matter even if the image doesnt actually have a 1280 version. the link will still function normally and offer the largest available version.

example:

bump, I have still to encounter jpg or png image from tumblr that didn't work with _1280 end.

Also another thing that has been popping up with users using the whitelist, they rely automation to fill in source fields for them. I have seen so many posts where only sources for FA has been only artist page and direct image. The most important one - submission page - has been missing.

I guess this would be really good addition to this, remind user when posting from certain sources where source can't be filled automatically if the source field is empty.

Providing the image source URL only is one of my biggest pet peeves. Clearly you had the actual source, you just chose not to provide it. Out of laziness? ignorance? Dick move, either way.

The most important link is the actual source. The submission page, not the image link or the gallery.

Can the submission page for certain sites like Tumblr or FA be automatically added to the source field based on a direct image URL?

Current system takes the information from url itself, which is why on FA pages, the artists page can be filled as it's part of filename, but there's no way to get submission page from that url. With Tumblr there's no way to get any additional information at all, not even blog name. With site like DeviantArt this is possibility as direct url contains ID to get into the submission page.

And that's the reason why submission page of these sites are important, as searching them afterwards requires manual work and if you do have direct url at your disposal, changes are you took it trough that submission page.
