This ended up revealing a bigger mess than I anticipated.
I'm not sure what to make of this.

Is it wrong to believe that there is a difference between expansion, which I imagine is your plain old increasing of X (say, with magic or science), and inflation, which is the filling of X with a gas to increase it?
By this description, one is more general than the other.

No.
Expanding X: rising X's length (if one-dimensional), area (if two-dimensional) or volume (if three-dimensional) .
Inflating X: rising X's volume by filling it with matter (unespecific physical state).

Seriously, though: I knew that there are more ways to inflate or expand & what happens, I wanted to make a simple point...
