thats a flat out -1

briefs have sleeves that cover the butt completely and parts of the thigh, swim briefs are basically shorts that are made for going in water. speedos do not have sleeves that cover the thighs and are always skin tight, speedos are essentially the male equivalent of panties from a visual standpoint.

You're thinking of boxer briefs, also called trunks.

That would be swimming trunks or board shorts, not speedos.

Speedos have become the new name for swim briefs due to how popular the Speedo brand was for swim briefs.

+1 for reverse. Better to use the official term over the generic trademark.

Joke request: budgie_smugglers A-> swim_briefs because aussie slang.

I was pointing out that the thing you were describing were not swim briefs. Swim briefs and speedos are the same thing.

There's only two and they're both mistagged. This wikipedia article should help clear things up a bit.

+½ . Those tags are for the same garment, however the former tag is poorly used.

If the metonymy is enough established to overwhelmingly overcome the original term, then would be more logical to maintain the "unofficial" however well-known name.

e.g. "dry ice" also is a trademark, following that logic we should use "solid_carbon_dioxide" instead.
