Rosettes) are a particular type of spot. Leopards do have a form of rosette but so do several others:

plus lion cubs, ligers, tiglons, bengal_cats and leopard cats

so... leopards don't have a monopoly on rosettes.

Not that furry artists are the best at puttting leopard spots on leopards and jaguar spots on jaguars :P

I added the note about rosettes (few tags) to leopard_spots (many tags) when I discovered rosettes tagged on a random old post. I didn't want to lose rosettes to the tag ocean, so I added the note.

As far as I could tell, leopard_spots was tagged for any rosettes. I don't think people cared about actual leopard spots, just the idea of these feline spots.

It would be more correct to reverse the alias. I think it's fair to say the tag name leopard_spots was just a clumsy, early attempt to describe a common featureset. Going by tag count, people seemed to gravitate toward leopard_spots but remain unaware of rosettes, although leopard_spots is listed in spots and tag_group:feral_anatomy but not rosettes.

Really, I think the tag name we want is rosette_spots. A little longer than rosettes and somewhat redundant, but much more obvious (i.e., don't need to check wiki, just the art).

Well, I had a tagging project around a year ago, if my memory serves me right, and managed to increase the tag count from three digits to four digits.

Can I retroactively -1 this? The whole thread is people pointing out rosette markings aren't exclusive to leopards.
I think the rosette_spots suggestion is all-around neater.

Yeah, even the OP of the thread, sdrawkcaB, changed their opinion after the alternative solution was suggested. I definitely think it should be unaliased and reversed, with the more descriptive and clearer rosette_spots.

Perhaps also a implication from rosette_spots to spotted_markings if we're not including prints/designs on other things
