It should just be aliased to "chest_tuft" because that's what it is 99% of the time.

You don't create an alias for something that's only true 99% of the time. It makes the other 1% harder to find and fix.

^ this. You could manually fix and then suggest an alias, or a disambiguation if the amount of errors is big enough. Got some numbers to back up the percentages?

People mistag neck_tuft and chest_tuft all the time...those areas of the body are rather close. This would be no more work than it already is.

Also bear in mind that chest_fur has 193 entries and chest_tuft has over 29,000. Tuft has clearly won here. The options aren't really change it or leave it alone...the options are how do we change it? Which you've given no actual advice on.

I've been told that doing that is in bad form...I'm getting mixed messages here.

That would require me to manually paw through all the chest_fur...most of them have neither chest_tuft or neck_tuft...obviously because the people using chest_fur don't know the correct tags they should be using.
