Also ring-tailed_possum.

Hmmm... Sincerely I don't know.
Both, ring-tailed lemurs and ring-tailed cats are sometimes referred as 'ringtails' (specially the latter), but I have no idea if the same applies to ring-tailed opossums; if yes, then they ought be included as well.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringtail omg wtf

I've never seen "ringtail" applied to anything other than that other species of cacomistle, but on this very site it's a shorthand for ring-tailed lemur somehow. So yeah, maybe worth disambiguation.

On the other hand, maybe just fix mistagged lemurs and leave the tag for the cacomistle kin? I mean, how would you tag that animal otherwise. I don't think "bassarisk" is a very common word, check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bassarisk for instance.

Does it ever gets tagged for just a ringed_tail?

Vernacular names are somewhat tricky, multiple creatures may share the same one and they also may vary among different locations.
The term 'ringtail' is known to be used to bassarisks, but sometimes it is used to ring-tailed lemurs as well, actually I even saw it being used to coatis (however this doesn't seem to be manifested as a problem in this site).

If we try to fix it that way, It probably would continue being mistagged. Also we already have a tag established for that animal: 'ring-tailed_cat'.

Not so often as it gets tagged to lemurs, but yes.

ringtail is currently flagged as a species, yet the wiki describes it as a type of tail... so... bump, +1, etc etc :)

The bulk update request #4540 is active.

remove alias ringed_tail (7357) -> ringtail (0)
remove alias ring_tail (0) -> ringtail (0)
remove implication ringtail (0) -> ring_(marking) (8465)
remove implication ringtail (0) -> tail_markings (111526)

Reason: This has bugged me for quite a while. "Ringtail" is a common name of the ring-tailed_cat, whose wikipedia page is even called simply ringtail. When I think of the word ringtail, I think of this animal first and foremost (I'm from the west coast USA so it may be location/dialect related). Then there is also the ring-tailed_lemur which could also be confused with this tag.
"Ringtail" to refer to tail markings also just sounds strange and out of place to me, all the other adjective_tail tags to my knowledge have a space. I propose that ringed_tail makes the meaning much clearer than ringtail.
Ringed_tail also matches ringed_eyes.

(Part 1 - O16's original request in this thread would need to be done after this one.)

The bulk update request #4541 has been rejected.

change category ringtail_(disambiguation) (0) -> invalid

Reason: Part 2, should be done along with O16's

Can't be added yet but should be done after part 1:
alias ring_tail -> ringtail_(disambiguation)
imply ringed_tail -> ring_(marking)
imply ringed_tail -> tail_markings

There also should be a mass update either before or after all this to tag all the current ringtail posts with ringed_tail.

EDIT: The bulk update request #4541 (forum #362878) has been rejected by @Cloudpie.

I disagree with the ringtail disambiguation. The species involved do not seem like they could be properly recognized without having a ringed tail to begin with. If someone just tags ringtail, they would still likely be accurately tagging some aspect of the image. It is still safe and proper to alias ringtail to ringed_tail.

I disagree, these animals are more than their tails. I can easily recognize them without the tails.
