Apparently, e621 accepts the colon as part of the tag, but when trying to search by it it doesn't work.

I guess if the tag is capable of being added, it should be aliased now to prevent further confusion.

The tag history for post #989149 shows that it apparently is in fact usable when editing.

That's because it's used in the metatags. type:jpg, etc. So that search tries to search for filetype _null.

You can search for the old tag by using type*_null. Running the search type*_null -type_null suggests the alias worked.
