Topic: Exoskeleton vs Chitin

Posted under General

What're the differences between these two tags? They're both used, seemingly interchangeably, but neither have wiki pages.

Isn't chitin a substance that exoskeletons are often made of?

I know the definition. I'm asking what differentiates the tags on here, as I see a lot of posts that could be tagged with either, or are tagged with both.

Exoskeleton: is an external skeleton commonly found in arthropods as well as in some fictional species.

The tag should be used to the aforementioned structure.

Chitin: is a polymer commonmy found in arthropod exoskeletons.

The tag shouldn't be used, use 'exoskeleton' instead.

Okay. I thought it was something like that.

Given that chitin has over a hundred posts, should it just be aliased?

And I kinda didn't which is why I asked.

Can chitin be identified by sight alone if it isn't part of an exoskeleton?

Probably. Chitin is also found in fungi cellular walls and mollusks beaks, radulae and internal shells, but I highly doubt that would be a real issue (apparently no one tags those with 'chitin').

Maybe if some funny one post its chemical formula or tag it to the cited body-parts, but I guess we shouldn't use the 'chitin' tag anyways.

Sorry for my tone, then.

Anyways, not really.

I'll make an alias request, then
