I think you meant Aero the Acro-bat, and I believe that video games shouldn't get mascot tags purely because of what you said; we can avoid the problem by just not including them. It would get out of hand if otherwise.

If mascots with video games shouldn't be included then Chester Cheetah, Ronald McDonald and many others are out. The instant you say some mascots aren't allowed, things start getting messy.

A mascot is a character that debuts as promotion for the parent entity. All of the 8chan characters exist to bring more people to 8chan.

Sonic exists for that reason as well. He was originally created to rival Mario and attract customers to the Sega Genesis, and Sega has used him for all sorts of promotions ever since.

Also, since when does a mascot have to start their existence as one?

From, good person, from. Go ahead and make a list of all mascots that have video games, yet said is not their merchandise of choice. Chester, Ronald, Burger King, you seem to have missed a severe context in that ones coming directly from a video game should be excluded. We have video_games for that.

Even if they are the main (and in some cases, sole) mascot of the company who created them? Mario is Nintendo's mascot. Sonic is Sega's mascot. Aero is Sunsoft's mascot, though I'm not sure if Sunsoft is still around.

The problem being is it is unnecessary. We don't need the ones from video games, we have implications for them already set. We could benefit, I myself am bringing up a way and am not backing it until practiced, from a mascot tag.

So basically, +0, here is a way that may work and solve hypothetical issues. Until results are shown, I don't want to judge benefits or lack thereof.

Except the video games implication is for the franchises containing the characters, not the characters themselves.

My main argument here is either all of the mascots should (eventually) have the mascot implication or none of them should. No cherry picking or exceptions, either all in or all out.

I do have one question, though. What about mascots for sports teams/leagues? They don't really have a copyright unless we use the team names and/or league names.

AFL - NRL - NFL

Examples pending...

Sports mascots are the most mascot you can get, man. They pretty much define the term.

Apparently we already do that (use their times and/or leagues as copyrights).

Now, about your suggestion of applying the same treatment to videogame mascots and other mascots in general, I would say "- 1".
The main reason is that people apparently don't really see them as mascots (or at least not in the same way they see the others), hence implying those to 'mascot' possibly wouldn't be useful from the searching point; I noticed this fact while creating the list of forum #218830.
Another reason is that some videogame mascots aren't characters, but whole species (e.g. pokémon with pikachu).
