Topic: Tag Alias: wing_boner -> spread_wings

Posted under Tag Alias and Implication Suggestions

+1. It's a nonsense tag made up by FiM fans. No one should get a free pass on tag bloat.

Fandom-specific tag, and usually not even tagged by the wiki definition. Nuke it.

STOP HAVING FUN GUYS

Next I vote for "These aren't my glasses" then

I say they are two different tags, and wing_boner is pretty much only used on pony pictures anyways.

i think that wing_boner gets used a bit too broadly but imo it has it's uses as joke tag and also its very good at describing specific kind of content.

maybe just clean it up and implicate?

A meme tag and a joke tag are two totally different things. For as much as I'd seen it, I didn't have a clue what this one meant until O16's example cleared it up. If I'm understanding correctly, all wing_boner means is spread_wings + fandom-specific imagined cause for the spreading of the wings. That doesn't sound like a reasonably useful tag.

like i already said, the tag is just being used too broadly. it would be functional and useful tag if it gets limited to images where the wing spreading is being used to signify character's arousal, because that is what wing boner means.

It is supposed to specifically be used in order to show arousal, not simply wings that are spread.

Right, but all you can actually see is that the wings are spread. Whether or not you see that they're spread as a result of arousal is purely subjective. "Yeah, sure she's flying, but just look at her. She's clearly horny. Tagging wing_boner." It's completely meaningless jargon on its own. If it's totally common for bronies to infer arousal from spread wings, then fine, tag spread wings and search for ponies and it, and expect to interpret it as such. It's impossible to responsibly use a tag that expects the tagger to know what's going on inside of the mind of the character, unless there's some clear set of attributes that lead to that and only that conclusion for as close to everybody as possible. Even really common things like embarrased and such are really iffy, but at least those have a pretty clear set of widely accepted queues. It's not that a fandom-specific word like that could never qualify, but I think the clarity bar has to be a lot higher when it's not a part of common parlance.

At most about ten percent of the posts are tagged correctly, and it should be noted that the tag has been cleaned a couple of times in the past. So most mistags are new.

It's consistently tagged for posts where characters are masturbating or having sex while their wings are spread. Sometimes when they're flying or lying on their back. That does not imply in any way that the wings are spread because of arousal.

It shouldn't apply to ones like post #1268219 or post #229874 either, even though the latter is used as an example in the wiki. That's just pose plus spread_wings.

Since it is clear by now that nobody cares enough about it to keep it in order, it needs to go. Five years is more than enough. Nobody's even bothered to fix the wiki entry in that time.

Agreed. Also, that first image isn't even an MLP-related image, which means its just forcing a fandom tag onto non-fandom images. MLP:FiM fans should not be given a free pass to tag whatever meme tag they want here. They have their own booru imageboard site, this is a general furry imageboard.

Nuke the tag.

[Deleted. I wanted to defend this tag, but really it's too much of a mess to fix. I'll repost my original comment if someone asks, but otherwise don't worry about it]

In case the tag gets nuked (which I think I can safely assume it will), I went through wing_boner ~voyeur ~kissing ~comic ~animated ~motion_lines (and a few other small searches) and added any authentic examples to the set here. Ok, now I really don't care if it gets nuked.

Wait, are we talking about invalidation now?

I assume he just meant aliased away, like I did when I said "nuked".

The arguments in favor of aliasing the tag away are good actually, however I guess that would be better to wait for more people really interested on mlp to show up, since their opinions are quite relevant regarding the subject matter.
Sincerely, for me this tag is useless, this certainly isn't the short of thing that I would search for; but what about people that really are into that? Given the popularly of mlp those probably aren't few.

Note: Differently from tags, sets can't be updated by anyone, so I am not sure if one of these really would work, at least unless the one(s) responsible for it really care(s) about this tasks.

It might have sounded like I'm annoyed the tag could go away, but I'm not, so let me clarify something... I'm not actually a mlp fan. In a sense, there's a disconnect between what I added to the set and what users have been using the tag for: I was "tagging" a silly comedy trope that's likely too silly and specific for a tag. The people adding the tag were tagging an outdated meme that's functionally equivalent to spread_wings.

+1 to original alias

Not being a mlp fan, the set probably won't be maintained well, but if anyone else wants to be a maintainer, I'd let them.
