Topic: Tagging certain Pokémon's gender

Posted under General

Some Pokémon are canonically one gender (Latias and Latios, for example). Should they be tagged with that gender and not ambiguous_gender? Unless they're obviously being portrayed as a different gender, of course.

Lore doesn't matter (unless there's yet another Pokémon exception I'm not aware of). Tag it based on what it looks like.

Well that just seems silly. If it's a Latias image and I'm supposed to follow "tag what you see", then I'd see a Latias, which are inherently female unless an artist has drawn a cock on one.

But if lore really does count for jack shit when "tag what you see" is concerned then I guess I'll follow that rule regardless of how dumb it seems to me.

Try Imagining for a monent you don't know what a latias is (or at least don't know its gender); would you really expect to see images of "ambigous gender" latias while searching for 'female'?

This isn't a silly rule; may be questionable sometimes, but isn't "silly".

the thing is that you dont see a female. you only know that its a female. because you cannot really tell if latias is intended to be male or female unless someone tells you or you do research about the lore.

Canonical gender is not currently tagged, see forum #239784.

Gender tagging is not based on lore (forum #62808, forum #186564). Tagging is done with the typical user in mind so real life sexual dimorphism (antlers) is considered but fictional dimorphism (Pikachu's tail) is not (for the most part). Basically you should imagine if you'd never seen this series before what would you tag the character as?

The main exception to this is Pokemon species. Even though someone who has never seen Pokemon would call most Ninetales characters foxes, it's not tagged.
