Topic: Suggestion for pictures with multiple characters

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Has this ever happened to you? (Yes ik its cheesy/cliche but bare with me)

You see a picture, with multiple characters. There's 4, 5 or even more characters/character tags. You see one character in the picture, and think "hey that ones pretty cute/hot. I wanna see more of him/her" but you don't know the name of the character?

And..you have to go through 4 or 5 (or however many) character tags before you find the right one?

I explain a solution with pictures here:

this is the best suggestion i've ever seen on this site.

unfortunately it's up to the code monkeys to make it a reality, so my excitement has been reduced by several orders of magnitude.

there would also have to be use cases for images with only one character tag, and if a character's name was changed, the notes would have to all be updated one by one, unless there was a dynamic note-changing system in place where if one character tag is removed at the same time another one is added, it would update the note.

but then what would happen if multiple character names were changed in one edit? would the system panic and apply the wrong character tags to the characters? i know there are many characters who have multiple names and nobody has bothered to edit the images and choose one, so this would be even more of a mess to untangle.

so it would either be poorly automated or a real pain to manually change each and every time. with a translation, at least, you aren't applying the same translation to what might be hundreds of images.

it seems like the current infrastructure would heave at trying to implement this idea. perhaps a beta test is in order, if e621 even has a beta.

Those are literally notes minus the hyperlink capabilities.

On the other hand, you could totally add it to the description like "First character from the left is XXX."

Descriptions wouldn't require extra code to make a second group of notes, and it's likely easier for everyone to do, but honestly I like both ideas. Sometimes I forget there's a description altogether.

I went through a 300+ page webcomic once because there were no character tags. Not that I regret it or anything.

Tags are enough for most images. Where tags are not enough, notes work just fine.
Click anywhere on the image to hide them.

Accidentally I like the second style more. It's less distracting.

if theres only one characer tag, then theres no need to use the bubbles

(im going to use a made up name-change example, for understanding purposes. Let's say "red_wolf13" changed his name to "blue_wolf13")

If a name of a character changes, can't a mod either replace the tag red_wolf13 to
blue_wolf13? so every time someone tags it with the first name it automatically changes the tag to the new name?

or have red_wolf13 imply blue_wolf13 (and visa versa) so that if you search red_wolf13, anything tagged with blue_wolf13 will ALSO show up

and visa versa

I mean, it's not as complicated as it sounds. If people can tag two different names, then they can just put TWO bubbles with the two different names on the character.

or, if you want to fix the two different names thing all together , then just do one of my earlier suggestions, either replacing or implying each other

Just as reminder, Dtext formatting does indeed work with notes, so they are also useful for stuff like if artist used one of their earlier images as background paintings in newer one, so you'll just use post #1234. So with characters, you can use {{tag}} and [[tag]] to link to character tag search and wiki respectively.

And it does make sense to just use notes. Already implemented system which works for this more than fine.

Can't you just click the character's name and look at other pictures of them? Sure it's annoying if there's 10 of then but that's much easier than adding new site features and icons and overlays.

What if you have to search through a bunch of pages of results with them in huge groups of the same characters to find one where they're with a different set, all because there are none with that character solo? In images which contain a lot of characters lined up, at least, I like to have it listed who's who.

This image is a great example of handling a roster, where it actually has a list underneath, but not all images do that:

Sure, for anybody who's big on gaming, it's probably obvious who these guys are, but the Smash Bros lineup is fairly popular to show together, so anybody who doesn't know them will have a hard time tracking down who's who.

Excluding one-time OCs, how often is a character not depicted solo at least once?
