Topic: Site Policy on free-to-use Lineart/bases?

Posted under General

I did some digging and I can't seem to find anything in what resembles an AUP (Couldn't find a section specifically named as such) and it mentioned about posting coloured version of bases (to limit to 5) but not the upload policy on the bases/lineart themselves

want to ask clarification before I upload something that may be against AUP and get taken down.

In case it matters, (I don't think it does but who knows) I commissioned the linearts specifically as a free-to-use piece, but am not the artist themselves. just mentioning in case it's an "Only the original artist" thing rather than me as the commissioner able to upload them as well

The actual original base would be fine, the colored bases would not be unless they were colored by the original artist, and only up to five instances would be allowed at any one given time.

What do you mean by 'as a free-to-use piece'? If you mean you commissioned it specifically for yourself to colour (basically a collab that involved money) but didn't particularly care if others use it too that seems kinda different than what's normally meant by using bases.

There are times when I've noticed people upload uncolored bases and literally say "feel free to color this in!" (or etc.), and said bases were just simple character + position that wouldn't take too much effort to make.

Something else that happens is some people commission lineart for themselves to colour in. It kinda sounded like this might be the situation, but with an additional 'oh and I released the blank base too for funzies'.

As in free for others to use and colour in themselves.

Original lineart is fine and if someone decides to color it, that's also fine. We simply handle colored version as edit and of course they are always free to link their colored version in the comments and link to external service where the colored version is hosted.

With "base" usually means something really generic artwork which is sold on sole purpose that it's easy to just color your OC colors in it. Because of this there's usually tens if not hundreds of same base but just differend colors applied to it. There's usually not much artistic value in these as result.

Then there's also "infinite YCH" and similar, where artist uses same kind of tactic, but instead of selling the thing as base, they do everything themselves. This is one of the reasons why there's the 5 max guideline.

Sometimes the line is really blurry, but the best differenciation is that if it's completely original lineart made one time, everything is more than fine, if it's something done just to make as much money as possible by printing as much stuff as possible, then it's usually not.
