Is it remotely possible to post the bigger/clearer image or replace the smaller/low resolution one?

Yeah, as long as the new image wasn't an artificial upscale of the original image or edited in some other way upload the image and you can flag the old version for inferior/duplicate of your new post. Favorites will be moved over when a mod comes to delete the old post.
