Topic: [Freature] Help page for those seeking highest quality Tumblr images?

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Requested feature overview description.
Link on the upload page to a help article explaining how to obtain raw images from Tumblr, as well as links to relevant addons and scripts that help with that process.

Why would it be useful?
Because for new users there is currently no good way for them to discover this information, and they might upload the smaller versions thinking they've done everything right. This would help this issue by placing the information at their fingertips in an easy-to-see location instead of languishing in a forum thread that frequently falls off the front page and is hard to find.

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?
Upload page

The help page guide for this exists on site actually, but perhaps the upload page could link to it.

I had a feeling it might already exist.

I also think it should mention the script that automatically alters the URL for you. Basically it's a pain in the ass to re-write it every time, and the script helps a lot.

Yeah scripts help a lot with the highest res image urls; I use some nifty ones for twitter and tumblr on chrome via tampermonkey. Even though I know the direct url stuff by heart at this point, having them done automatically is so helpful and convenient anyways.

That's essentially wiki page which I copy-pasted out of my profile bio, so that's why it's there, but not so much linked from anywhere, unless you look at the old instructions on forum #169987, which is now locked as it's outdated and instructing to that wiki page instead. Gives much better formatting and crowdsourcing the stuff makes more sense.

I actually still have stuff on my bio which should be moved to wiki or just somewhere else.

It's there, just click user script.
Thing is already looking really massive wall of text to TL;DR already, so having instructions on how to use user script in same mess just made it worse and reduntant. Also as there are user scripts for other sites as well, didn't feel like having instructions seperately make sense even the slightest, especially for those who already know what user scripts are.

And because of that, tumblr is far from only site which does need special instructions how to obtain highest quality file, so only giving instructions to one specific site at the time is also bit reduntant, so if you need to instruct someone with tumblr specifically, you can always link to specific part of the wiki like

I counted two...one for Tumblr and one for Twitter.

Why assume any knowledge at all? It would probably be best to 1. explain what the script does, which is easy, it automatically changes the URL so Tumblr brings up the raw image. 2. give a quick explanation of how to install it...which is basically a two-step process of "install Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey then visit this URL and install the script". Not exactly a byzantine process that's going to take up a ton of page space...you could even put it in a collapsible section.

That would be a lot better than a link that just says "user script" with no context...I mean we want people to do this, don't we? We want them to upload the best possible images, so we should make it as simple and easy as possible to obtain the ALL info needed to do that.

But it's probably one of the most difficult to figure out on your own...I mean come on, the raw URL trick was only discovered 4 months ago. That was after YEARS. Most of the instructions for the other ones are pretty bog-standard and are basically "hey, see that download button? Press it" and most people can figure that out without much hand-holding.

So although we can link to the entire article, I still think Tumblr deserves a special mention.

Great, but we should put that on the upload page so people can instruct themselves. Many people aren't going to even bother asking to be instructed because the thought that perhaps they are not obtaining the highest-quality image won't even pop into their brain in the first place.

Oh. I have couple more, but I have made them myself, sorry with that.

Also I though about writing seperate section to instruct with using scripts to help with aquiring best variation, but haven't gotten around to it yet, making tumblr section less bloated from what it already was was top priority.

True.

As for second part, that's up to higher up staff.
