Topic: Why are female breasts tagged as "breasts", but male breasts are tagged as "moobs"?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Seems like an odd convention to go by. I mean, I get it, but it seems like oddly casual phrasing for a tagging system which is normally very formal and strict, and considering that "boobs" is aliased to "breasts".

Is "moobs" considered to be the best term for that?

Same reason we use penis/pussy.

There isn't a real official term for male breasts that don't go into dickgirl territory.

If you really want to get technical, the world "mammal" means breasts. This just complicates it more.

"Mamma", technically.

Because the idea of calling male breasts breasts is too much for some people to handle. Technically speaking, a breast is a single group of pectorial muscles plus everything covering it (see also glutes vs. buttocks). What most people call a breast (in humans at least) is more accurately called a mamma.

It's kinda hard to use an official term for "male breasts" when it doesn't have one.

You could do something more formal, like `male breasts` or even `gynecomastia`, and have `moobs` be an alias but that's more or less creating work for the sake of appearances and thus far nobody's cared. xD

Gynecomastia is the term for a male having developed breasts, not a term for the breasts themselves. It's a condition, not a thing.

Looking a bit broader for a moment, do/should we have a term for when a male character has a part/feature typically found on females (excluding genitalia because intersex) and vice-versa? Things like male kangaroos with a pouch and female lions with a mane would be covered by it.

Perhaps more importantly, anyone searching for 'breasts' will want the traditionally female style of breast, while anyone searching for "man titties" will not want female breasts. and breasts male ain't gonna do the bill.

I mean, if you really want to rename it... maybe Male_breast or Masculine_breast, but then you might have some overlap with the intersex area. Moob is pretty undignified, but there's not really another weord unless you want to go into other slang like.. man_breast or man_tit or whatever.

what about images with multiple subjects, one with moobs and other who is female?

It does have its problems but is more likely to find something relevant than breasts male.
