Topic: Guilty Pleasures?

Posted under Off Topic

So, does anyone have a "guilty pleasure" when it comes to entertainment? By that I mean a movie/book/game/t.v. show/cartoon/etc generally considered to be bad by the general population (including critics), but still ultimately enjoyable to you?

For me, I'd have to say Sonic Boom is that. I know fans and critics alike despised the games, cartoon, and comics, and at one point I was among them. Eventually, however, the spin-off series kinda grew on me and I ended up enjoying them immensely, if only for being different. I won't lie, I know Rise of Lyric was broken as all hell when it first launched and the cartoon struggled to find a tone to follow at first, but like most franchises it eventually found its own niche to cater towards. Shattered Crystal and Fire and Ice were slight improvements on Rise of Lyric and the show gradually improved with time.

I've actually grown to become fond of the characters in their own way. Although, this Knuckles will never be the same Knuckles as this Knuckles. Nor will this Amy be the same as this Amy (although some would say Boom!Amy is a significant improvement on Modern Amy). But I can still appreciate the characters and ideas Sonic Boom tried to apply to the beloved series.

So, how about you guys? Have any particular guilty pleasures like mine?

Genuinely in-character Fox x Krystal art, or generally anything legitimately in-character involving Krystal.

Apparently (emphasis on apparently) most of the Krystal fandom hates that enough to warrant a month-long holiday which bans it as submissions for the holiday.

Being in many fandoms most people despise is the one thing I will never be ashamed of.

a month long protest holiday. o_O never heard of anything like that before and with how the internet and world works, that seems kinda pointless. plus it's likely a self-imposed ban that they choose to follow.

as for me...nothing in particular here except maybe the cub porn thing. >.> probably shouldn't bring that up anywhere outside this and similar sites and especially irl unless i want a shitstorm of anti-pedo BS to start following me everywhere (cause you know it'd inevitably go that route).

No, it's not banned from actually being uploaded (that was a wording mistake on my end, sorry about that), the unofficial holiday (Krystal Appreciation Hullabaloo on FA, which takes place every August, iirc) actually celebrates out-of-character Krystal art and pretty much doesn't allow in-character stuff to be featured.

But back on track with the thread, I honestly can't think of any other guilty pleasures I might have. I sometimes like putting odd ingredients on pizza like corn or peas, does that count?

Porn: when popular dom species like dragons, horses, dogs etc. become the whimpering sub. I know I shouldn't like that, but I do anyway.

Food: I put ketchup on pasta. Don't do that in Italy.

Games: playing with quirky, underused or unconventional guns/items. Off-meta all the way.

Movies: when villains win against the Mary Sue or there is no happy end.

Music: I actually like Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" and even have it on vinyl, which I play it occasionally...

I agree with your preferences in porn, movies, and music. Games I can understand. But I do say that ketchup on pasta seems weird, but perhaps it's a new potential favorite dish.

Grilled tofu and regular hot dogs at the same time, because I actually like tofu but I'm not about to make tofu and meat mutually exclusive. Bonus if the hot dogs were in the same sauce as the tofu.

Hot Pockets. It's trailer park food, but it's tasty trailer park food.

Actually, I'll just say almost all trailer park food. I have very low standards.

For porn: I've found myself liking tentacle stuff quite a bit lately for whatever reason.

For food: I like chicken fingers on pizza, french fries too. Heh, I'll likely be dead at 40.

For music: Despite mainly being into death metal, I really like the song 'Take on me' by Aha.

Movies, shows, etc where it ends with everyone dying, the world coming to an end, the bad guy winning, etc.

movies about fairy tales closer to their original form are good for that. like krampus, the tooth fairy, or little red riding hood. them fairy tales weren't always quite so nice and pleasant. ;)

krampus though, check it out if you haven't seen it yet. it has an evil jack-in-the-box that eats kids...and it is VERY frightening to see and hear. and don't expect a happy ending because they stayed true to krampus' character in that krampus does not bring cheer or laughter but rather he brings punishment and takes things...

good movie, pretty scary for a horror/comedy.

Sad/somber orchestral video game music

hmmm... it's not sad or sombre but i do have a video i downloaded off youtube long ago that is dark and gothic with fitting artwork. it's a medley of the soundtrack for Demon's Crest. truly, this was one of capcom's best games. the theme, atmosphere, and music all fit together perfectly. :) that will always be one of my favorite video games.

Stories where a character is in an unwinnable scenario and suffers permanent consequences for losing, but only if the character suffering could not possibly have deserved anything that happened. They help remind me that the Just World Hypothesis is a lie, which sounds terrible until you realize that means it's also not my fault.

Stories like the following:

Psycho-Pass

Judgment and sociopathy are synonymous and you can be executed for creativity, empathy, and/or ptsd, which means I'm as good as dead. Going back to status quo is not to be episodic, but to emphasize that it can't be fought, and trying will guarantee a Crime-Coefficient above 300. Humanity's lifespan has decreased significantly due to lack of Eustress. Bystander Syndrome is not only a universal trait, but thought of as a positive trait, if not mandatory.

Hellgirl

It's already clear that vengeance is not a form of justice, with one request even being denied because it was in the nae of justice, with Ai stating "I am no champion of justice." The system it uses guarantees that at least one undeserving person will always be damned to Hell with each use without exception. People have successfully uses it knowing the target was undeserving just for the power of deciding who goes to Hell. One person who clearly deserved it successfully escaped. More than once. Victims have included: a twin because she wasn't being abused like the other one, an infant because they weren't wanted, a quadriplegic because taking care of them was exhausting (said quadriplegic was only paralyzed because she failed a suicide attempt made due to the guilt of being too much of a burden), a nurse whose big secret about her "do no wrong" act was that it was not an act, a socially anxious man who accidentally spilled his coffee on someone, and countless people who just happened to be in the way of a multimillionaire corporation who knew of Hell Correspondence's existence. The one time an undeserving victim is spared, Ai is sent to Hell in his place. It is possible to have the contract made in your name against your will, meaning you paid your soul to damn someone without having ever agreed to do so. The assistants include a pacifist who used to be a katana (left on a battlefield and given sentience after 100 years), an old man who used to be an escape chariot (caught fire when evacuating a family of nobles, remained as a Mononoke, and was granted humanity by being forgiven by Ai), a woman who was sold into sex slavery and killed when she refused (revived from her charred bones), and a 14-year-old girl who was buried alive because the villagers were uncomfortable with her existence and "randomly" chose her as the sacrifice when she was 7. Very rarely is nobody innocent punished. The only confirmation that Hell is not the only afterlife is a man who died of old age seconds before the string could be pulled, rescinding the contract because it cannot damn someone who is already dead. The only other limit to its use is the price of damning someone being your soul. That means it can only be used once, as you only have one soul.

Ghost in the Shell

Humans who want to lose their humanity and succeed, AIs who want to be human but never can, the realistic character ages (The character in his 20s is seen the same way we see teenagers, not old enough to have augmentations unless it's an immediate life-or-death situation, which it isn't. Most other characters are middle aged or would be elderly from our perspective)...but I refuse to acknowledge the movie. The Major wouldn't do the whole "I never asked for this. They can't control me." because she was so in favor of her prosthetic body that she persuaded someone else to get one under the same circumstances, and uses an outdated model because she has grown attached to it. That and she's already the most respected character in Section 9, not being controlling her is something that nobody has ever questioned because there is no point in doing so. Even the mayor defers to her.)

Deadman Wonderland:

Fucking duh.

Also, any stories that follow this format where the characters do not give in. I might not believe in the existence of justice, but I do believe in perseverance, and to quote Amber Williams, "Sometimes, hope is all one has. And sometimes, hope is all one needs."

Another guilty pleasure of mine: Adam Sandler's old films. His modern films are garbage even by my low standards, but I can't get enough of his "Happy Gilmore" days. Other films of his I like are "Mr. Deeds", "Click", "Billy Madison", "50 First Dates", and even "Grown Ups" wasn't that bad. That being said, I can see why a lot of people don't like them. They don't make me laugh because they're actually funny, I laugh at how genuinely awful they all are.

Did you know there's a porn parody of that series? Naturally, it's titled Flesh Gordon. The most surprising fact is that it actually has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, giving it a "fresh" rating. Soon you might have a new guilty pleasure.

but you kinda have to with some of the earliest incarnations of the doctor. iirc the BBC lost or recorded over some of the early episodes at some point. something about storage space or something i think. or have i missed something and those episodes still exist somewhere?

come to think of it, i haven't checked this newest season but i have noticed each season getting shorter and shorter in recent years. kinda hoping that's not some ominous omen about the future of the series.

I don't know much about how television works, but could having higher production standards have something to do with that? If it takes longer to create special effects and write better scripts, then it would take longer to create each episode, right? Which means less episodes can be made in a year (which is the standard length of a season). Or maybe I'm completely wrong about that.

i really don't know tbh but i do know that the show has always aired 1-hour long episodes...well, not really. it's 1-hour long if you include the commercials and other shit they cram in on tv. i've found that 30 minute anime episodes actually tend to be closer to the 22 minute mark in length.

on topic... the very first series aired in 23 November 1963 - 12 September 1964 and had a whopping 42 episodes. that's 42 hour long episodes in a little under 1 years time.

jump ahead to series 8 (second uh...these are after they rebooted the show in 2005) at 23 August 2014 - 8 November 2014 and series 9 at 19 September 2015 - 5 December 2015 and you have 2...actually 3 now for series 9 this year... of the shortest doctor who series in history at a mere 12 episodes each.

season...series...the wiki page for the episodes listing has them mixed up or something. before 2005 they're listed as series then seasons after that. anyway, they've always been getting shorter and shorter with each new season until now where it sits at 12/season for these last 3 seasons.

more info on the "missing episodes" can be found here

Updated by anonymous

treos said:
*snip*

I think the bottom line we can agree on is quality beats quantity. If a show produces 30 bad episodes in a season, that show won't stick around for long. But if a show makes only 10 great episodes, then it becomes a classic.

As for missing episodes, there can be any number of reasons for why they disappeared from being banned/censored to hell, being given only limited release, being archived for later use, or simply being lost or destroyed. Pretty much every long-running program has at least a handful of "lost episodes" (which, naturally, spawned countless conspiracy theories and creepypastas). Still an intriguing concept to think about.

I don't actually hate the Star Wars prequels. Seeing the origin story of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine will always be memorable. I thought Ewan McGregor did a fantastic job as Obi Wan Kenobi. Without the prequels, the original Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront II would have been lacking in content. We wouldn't have the excellent Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars miniseries. A lot of people hate the prequels, but they spawned some of the most memorable Star Wars moments and spinoffs.

Anyway, the prequels have a lot of good things going for them. There were just a lot of problems with the execution. Especially the dialogue... but the action is often more interesting.

I love controversial humor and parodies. A musical artist I listen to a lot is called "Rucka Rucka Ali". He gets a lot of flak for being "racist", "homophobic", "sexist", and perpetuating negative stereotypes, but I know it's just comedy at its core. Even if the intent could be malicious, then at least Rucka's an equal opportunity hater.

In his satirical universe, African Americans are lazy, violent savages, white males are self-entitled bigots, and every religion has its head shoved firmly up its own ass. I'll list a few sample songs below, but be warned, they are offensive if taken seriously.

I'm Obama (Parody of "Thrift Shop" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis)

Trump (Parody of "Stitches" by Shawn Mendes)

Ima Korean (Parody of "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas)

I H8 Nickelback (Parody of "Beg For It" by Iggy Azalea)

PETA (Parody of "Cooler Than Me" by Mike Posner)

Again, keep in mind these are just parodies.

This, for one, I like the prequels as well, about the only bad thing I could say about them is Jar Jar Binks (truly annoying, but thankfully he gets little screen time). Other than that, I like them.

More below::

Multi media/Fandom: Yes, I am a Brony, I like to watch MLP, I enjoy the fanart, I even have a blue unicorn (named Looking Glass ) as my fursona/ponysona. some furries seem to resent bronies.

Music: 1. I actually like Nickelback, honestly, why do people bag on them so much? I like them.
2. "Van Hagar", or Van Halen with Sammy Hagar as the front man. it's not that I don't like David Lee Roth, I do, but I also like the Sammy Hagar stuff.
3. Toby Keith's "Red Solo cup" I dunno, it's just silly, off the wall, and great when drunk!

Gaming:
I like playing the Wii, but only with other people. It's not as fun solo. Some gamers bag on those who like the Wii. I mean, just because I like Xbox, I can't also like playing something more casual as well, like the Wii or angry Birds?

Tv/movies:

I like cheesy sci-fi, especially on the TV series "Mystery Science theater 3000". I just love seeing the cheesy films, and how Joel, Mike, and the robots crow and Tom Servo rip into it with jokes. It's great!

I still watch cartoons as an adult.

Rocky Horror Picture Show: I like that movie, and I really want to watch it at a "midnight double feature" at a movie theater in October, especially if they allow riffing, and stuff like waving lighters, squirt guns, and yelling "slut" when Janet appears, or "Great Scott!" When professor Scott appears"

Porn: I like to Clop, there is just something about seeing those cute candy-colored ponies that makes me want to slam them until they climax.
I also prefer feral with ponies, despite an anthro presence on other furry porn.

Now wouldn't it be funny if someone was collecting this "guilty pleasures" of ours for spme nefarious purposes >:)

But srsly:

Tv - Cartoons, soap operas (those can get under your skin remarmably easy)

Music - My country's equivalent of hillbilly music, air raid alert/machine/war sounds (they relax me for some reason)

Food - Vinegar, i drink that s**t like it's vine and i love it (Acceto Balsamico di Modena is a special treat), Garlic-flavoured vinegar is equivalent to olympic ambrosia.

Porn - Furry hermaphrodites (futas), i have Gideon to thank for that -.-

Misc - Having a monthly ritual where i buy macro/normal furry porn folios and albums.

-I like baby food (the one with the fruits)
-I really like the Planes movie from Disney and still have a lot of feelings about the Skipper & Dusty friendship, the thing is I actually think this movie is good (even if it isn't that creative)
-I use to love the Baby Looney Tunes as a kid and still find them cute (I don't watch it anymore tho)
-I look at all kinds of fictional porn including underage stuff
-I'm really into omorashi...like really
-I love nightcore unironically, I sometimes make my own but have to restrain myself because it makes me dislike the original for being too slow
-I've actually watched a few parts of a weird Star Trek porn movie and I kinda liked the part with the fake Data

I unironically listen to meme mashups more than actual music (All Star, Never Gonna Give You Up, Space Jam, SiivaGunner, etc.)

Also Nostalgia Critic.

Have any particular guilty pleasures like mine?

maybe the fact that i'm here almost only for the art and tagging than fapping. one day a friend came home and saw furry porn on my pc, then i had to explain him what tagging was while looking like a tomato. now he made an account to help me with that (i was like "this guy lmao") but then he realised that he HAS to do it on english and he knows nothing about the language so he's not using the acount now.

I actually liked Pokémon Ultra Moon quite a bit. Like, almost as much as the original, which was already one of my favorites in the series.

Also, researching the history of random countties like Myanmar (which is where the origin of my username is from) and East Timor. It's more interesting than it really should be considering how dark the histories of the two I mentioned are.
