Topic: [Bug] Poor error reporting on invalid input in comment search.

Posted under Site Bug Reports & Feature Requests

Bug overview description.
searching for myself in comments in field <username> gives error page

What part(s) of the site page(s) are affected?
'comments'

What is the expected behavior?
Show comments made by me

What actual behavior is given instead?
error page, "5 0 0"

Time of incident (if applicable).
aproximatly 22.48, 2nd jan.

Can you reproduce the bug every time?
no, I couldn't replicate it after reloading the page

What steps did you take to replicate this bug?
going back a page, "ctrl x" username from 'search' field and pasting in 'username' field, could not replicate after reloading page

Errors or other messages returned (if any).
managed to lose it while trying to replicate bug, but something like:
5 0 0
something went horribly wrong

show this to an administrator: [lots of characters (is there a history for copy/paste?)]

this was really easy to fix, i simply had tro reload the 'comments' page but it seemed very serious so I reported it anyway. unless there is an easily-accessable history for copy/paste I'm afraid I lost the error message :/

Updated

Were you logged in while doing that search? Thought the option to do username related searches while not logged in was disabled a while back.

You attempted to search the post_id field with a username, which threw an error because a name isn't a valid post id. The error reporting on invalid inputs isn't very good right now.

Yes, I even tried logging out just now and it still worked.

It would be nice with a proper error message, so that if I do this again, I don't freak out thinking I broke the server:p or do it 3 times more

Apologies, It's my first ever bug report, care to tell me how I should have done?
(I just realized that I should have titled it after the bug and not the error message, sorry about that. Anything else?)

That was the only mistake. No biggie. I changed the title of the thread so I could keep track of it.

was the error by any chance 502 Bad Gateway?

the error was 500 as stated in the first post. also turns out that it was caused by mistakenly typing in id field instead of username field as stated few posts above

Might wanna read atleast the full bug report before coming with suggestions, but I recommend reading the posts as well.
