Topic: Ambiguous tags Discussion/listing

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

There's a wiki version here: e621:ambiguous tags, which may not be as up-to-date as the replies to this forum version. See forum #187449 for more info

See forum #185277 for a list of ambiguous tags by date added, rather than type

(it's listed in alphabetical order, but categorized by date, if that makes sense. May change that if someone suggests it)

Instead of cluttering the stickied tagging project topic with a bunch of ambiguous tags/replies, I'm going to list them here. Feel free to update this OP/do the same

all general

Since we have a dedicated wiki for this now, what I'm thinking of doing is only update the forum OPs periodically (maybe every week or so) to keep things less hectic

Maybe even list the most recent tags in the OPs (within the past year or so? dunno), so people can have a better idea of what's relevant

Ideas about that welcome too

-
the variety of text formatting in that OP is ridiculous

Here's a major one: dark. Almost 1500 posts.

Even the wiki description is ambiguous:

This tag is generally used to describe images where characters are not that well visible, perhaps being outside at night or otherwise enshrouded. It also sometimes refers to images that have an emotional subtext that's nasty and vindictive.

Should probably be disambiguated into darkness (and night), dark_theme, and... what tag do we have for the other usage? Grimdark?

Crystal. The wiki entry predates disambiguation, but lists most of the usages. There's also crystals, which is considerably less ambiguous.

grimdark is a genre not a word for dark like the others you mentioned.

in the case of fanfics grimdark would likely be a story that is both grim and dark in nature. kinda like the cupcake or rainbow factory stories the mlp:FIM fandom have.

All done~

Added everything, even the uncertain ones for now to be sure

Thinking of only listing the most recent changes per month in the forum OP (which is March as of posting this, and April in a couple of days)

Too short?

Edit: On second thought,
since they're sorted alphabetically, and not by date, that might become a pain (if not infeasible) to isolate the tags that were added by date alone

-

@Genjar et al:

Are the *_(disambiguation) tags 'official'?[/s] What if we made them into a separate tag type altogether? Main considerations I can think of about that for now: + Makes keeping track of tags that have already been disambiguated to some extent much easier + Since there's a dedicated tag/type for it, the relevant tagging projects are also much easier to track/start - [not really sure at the moment, list any if you know]

Updated by anonymous

Sounds great! Yeah, conditional searching would be super useful for narrowing down ambiguous tags within each *_(disambiguation), especially the more common ones like rough*, holding* etc.

P.S / Self note: I'll eventually add all the *_(disambiguation) aliases, so don't bother mentioning those unless something comes up with them

Sphynx and sphinx? I haven't seen anyone mix those up, but it could probably happen. So aliasing the former to sphynx_cat wouldn't hurt.

Which reminds me...

Panther is somewhat ambiguous. It is tagged for all felines from the genus Panthera (jaguar, leopard, lion, tiger), and also used as a generic tag for any larger felines. Such as cougars and cheetahs.

Properly disambiguating it would take a ridiculous amount of work... But we should avoid tagging it whenever possible. Alternately, we could re-purpose it to mean big cat, although I can't think of any existing species tags that have such a split. And size split is not too relevant in case of anthros, since all species tend to be drawn in same size.

Updated by anonymous

Hm, assuming the post character count limit doesn't become a problem, I'm considering just listing all the tags in the OPs in alphabetical order, rather than by type

  • doing that allows you to more easily look up a tag and see if it's already counted/known, so you don't risk submitting a duplicate entry, where an update may have been better

Thoughts?

Many ambiguous tags mix two or more categories, which makes it tough to pigeonhole them into any single section. So yeah, an alphabetized list seems better.

not sure how sorted this is

Not very.
I've chipped at it occasionally, but never found time to fully sort it. The older posts in particular are a mess.

zodiac is an artist tag

created zodiac_(constellation) for the..constellations

-----

Ok, I'll resort everything alphabetically unless someone bothers to object with a better reason
-

Hm, should there be an internet_troll tag?

this one's kind of a mixed example though, really have no clue what to about that if anything

Updated by anonymous

Hm, the first has a rather low count, but *_(astrology) covers the personified theme better, I'd be ok with using that as the standard zodiac tag

should the artist tag stay un..disambiguated?

That particular one looks more like an orc. "Internet" trolls tend to be Anon, human, or the troll species.

Probably not as ambiguous as the rest in here, but for those who don't already know what it's for, power_bottom could mean anything butt-related

Power bottom refers to any sort of penetration, it's just that the one being penetrated is the dominant one.

Updated by anonymous

  • Added everything mentioned so far to forum #185277
    • EXCEPT: power_bottom - still waiting for additional opinions on that one, since I'm not sure if the sub/dom context @Furrin_Gok mentioned is commonplace enough to warrant it
      • (though I'm not too familiar with bdsm terms and never heard of it, so there's that..)
  • Added a full alphabetical listing to e621:ambiguous tags as mentioned earlier
    • The alphabetical listing and type listings are still out of date for April though, but the list by date at the bottom isn't

Oh, right. Personification.
Such characters should probably be tagged as *_(personification) for consistency, instead of *_(character).

Irene. Artist and also a common name. The tag bounces between arttag and chartag all the time.

Updated by anonymous

Mentioning it in here, since we don't seem to have a 'Tag Standards' forum (should I make one?)

Suggestion from @Qmannn about ambiguous tag standardization

forum #190461 (emphasis mine)

Qmannn said:
If we're going to add disambiguation tags, we should probably tag exactly what the character is associated with instead of just adding _(charater) so that similarly named characters aren't confused.

e.g. envy_(fullmetal_alchemist), envy_(artist name), or envy_(character owner) instead of envy_(character).

I'm kinda surprised that this isn't being done regularly.

Metal. ...that's a bad one, for sure. Mix of metallic objects, metallic bodyparts, even metal music.

Updated by anonymous

inanimate - species. not sure if this is used enough, if at all as an adjectival tag to warrant disambiguating see Genjar's post below

(leaving mention of this here for now until/if it actually gets aliased) aliased to animate_inanimate

Changelog/Update - Jul. 30 2016

Added everything so far to e621:ambiguous tags except:
  • animate/animate_inanimate
    • not sure if there's a need to mention that on
  • *_(disambiguation) tags

Note: In most cases, tags with <5 count were omitted

  • Didn't update the changelog by date yet (May-July)
  • Didn't update OPs

What's ambiguous about that? Is there an another artist who goes by the same name?

Come to think about it, what's up with half of these entries? irene_rita_sandburg_(nightfaux)? ...ambiguous?

Because not everybody is going to know about them

Somebody tagging irene* may not know the full name exists and just tag irene instead

Same for is*

Then it should be listed on that tags' wiki page.

I thought that purpose of this list was to list ambiguous ones, so we can easily see what's left to fix. Mixing in ones that have already been disambiguated just makes it pointless.

Updated by anonymous

Hm, that's a good point

We could have a separate section for already disambiguated tags too

...Their name is "is." What is not ambiguous about that? Is is a very common and generic word that is used just about everywhere. People may assume it is an invalid tag and remove it.

is is ambiguous. Whereas is_(artist) is clearly an artist tag.

feeding: total mess, too much for me to sort out at the moment. Overeating, vore, feeding animals, drinking cum(?!), feeding tubes, etc.

Updated by anonymous

nedroid.com (presumably the name of the webcomic) is currently aliased to the artist tag, nedroid (presumably the name of the artist, whose actual name is Anthony Clark)

No idea what to do about that, unless we use the artist's real name instead

Updated by anonymous

Balls is ambiguous at best and when you start delving into fetish tags like ballbusting and especially castration and there are internal shots where you can see the actual BALLS it becomes a little awkward to tag.

If we're disambiguating other tags might as well hit this one while.

The reason for this also is fundamentally we use the tag right now to defer to any instances of a scrotum. We dont tag balls on scalies with internal nuts because we don't see them and if we do its because its exposed so that's tagged with exposed_testicle.

Let's fix this up.
