Topic: eSIT v1.2.0: eSix Informative Thumbnails (now adds icons for sound/no_sound tags)

Posted under e621 Tools and Applications

Thumbnails that care!™ No more white boxes!

A userscript which improves Video, Flash, and Blacklisted thumbnails.

Features

Identicons Thumbnails uniquely identify their post
Sound Tag Indicators Icons for sound, no_sound, and sound_warning appear on Video and Flash thumbnails
File size and dimensions Displayed on Video and Flash thumbnails
Blacklist overlay See which of your blacklist rules applies to a post when you hover over it (hold ctrl to affect all)
Preview blacklisted posts Left click to reveal the preview image (hold ctrl to affect all)
Planned Enhancements
  • Indicators for more tags like long_playtime, high_framerate, and interactive on webm and swf posts
  • Show file size and dimensions for non-webm/swf animated posts
  • Work with dynamically loaded thumbnails (forum post/blip/etc preview button)
  • Blacklist rule overlays on /post/index pages
  • Some other stuff
Known Issues
  • On Firefox, loading animation timing is incorrect
  • "nullxnull" dimensions on some thumbnails. This is the result of e6 missing width and height data on some posts. Not much I can do about it other than hide that part of the overlay when there's no data.
  • Long tags do not fit fully in the blacklist overlay
  • If many blacklist rules apply to one post or if the rules are just very long they will not fit fully in the blacklist overlay
Notes
  • Identicons are generated client-side using Jdenticon
  • Tested on Chrome and Firefox using Tampermonkey.

Cool script, this a lot more interesting than a sea of white boxes.

I don't know if it's possible to adjust the color settings so none of the shapes will be hidden, but could flash, video, and blacklisted be given different background colors? Then the word can be moved up out of the way and the whole icon would be visible. Just an idea.

Thank you. It is my first published code.

As long as the color is dark enough, I think the background will not obscure any of the shapes, but I don't think there's any way I can prevent dissonant color pairings from occurring if the background isn't at least grayscale. I went with black because it seemed to consistently produce the most visually appealing thumbnails.

I will try experimenting with different colors again though, and most likely I will make the colors individually adjustable on a settings page at some point.

As for the center text, I just gave it a quick try with the text moved to the top of the thumb. Having more of the icon visible is nice, but it feels a bit off not being where my eye naturally focuses. Maybe I'm just too used to it centered. I will take some time to consider it further. If anyone else has a preference on this, please let me know.

In any case, I do plan to make the text less obtrusive by having it fade away on hover. For avatars, it will be hidden by default and shown only on hover. I may also add a shortcut which hides the text for all thumbnails of a type.

Update to v1.2.0

  • If a video or flash post is tagged sound, no_sound, or sound_warning an icon will appear on its thumbnail to indicate that
  • Holding ctrl while hovering over a blacklisted thumb now shows the overlay for all blacklisted thumbs on the page
  • Holding ctrl when left clicking a blacklisted thumb now shows/hides the preview for all blacklisted thumbs on the page
