Topic: What's the difference between avian_humanoid and winged_humanoid?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I just retagged post #1669439 from avian humanoid to winged humanoid but now that I think about it I'm not sure about that, and others like post #1669324, post #1669438, post #1669461, etc.

A winged humanoid has wings. That seems pretty simple. Usually this means an angel but it also applies to harpies who usually have bird legs. What defines an avian humanoid? A beak, like Medli? Feathers in other places? A tail? Looking through avian_humanoid a lot of them just look like winged humanoids to me.

I would say things like:

  • Inspiration and features from real life bird species
  • Abundance of feathers
  • Not always, but a bird-like bottom half with bird feet helps

Define an avian humanoid, in general at least.

However, winged humanoids aren't always avian based and are pretty clearly non-avian (see demons/succubi/etc with their membranous wings, and the like). HOWEVER, winged and avian humanoida can cross over for sure and be both at once.

It's similar to things like the square's relationship with the rectangle: every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square. Though not all avian or winged humanoids are the same; just that they cross incredibly often.

The examples you gave are very mixed cases however, so I can understand your point of view, as the character just resembles a general angel at first glance. I would personally remove any avian related tags, as she doesn't look avian in the context of the images.

I wonder how we can come to a sort of... baseline standard for avian humanoids, maybe.

not all avian humanoids have wings and not all winged humanoids are avian based.

Hyep! Agreed! You put it more simply than I did ahaha.

Perhaps we can reformat the avian_humanoid and winged_humanoid wiki pages to address this? Wouldn't hurt to mention the difference and that winged humanoids aren't inherently avian humanoids, and vice/versa.
