Topic: Species tags for Stellaris?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I haven't noticed a whole lot of work under the stellaris tag yet - it's mainly on my mind because of the ads launched recently. It does bring up what I thought was an interesting issue, though.

The details of the various species in Stellaris are described here: https://stellaris.paradoxwikis.com/Species#List_of_species_groups

In summary: species are customized and named by players, but are visually limited to one of several dozen appearances (rather than the functionally infinite variety of body designs seen in a game like Spore). These are sorted into eight categories based on similarity to real-life organisms.

The question is how to handle species tagging for a game that has so many unique species, most of which have no official name. I could see tagging the different categories - avian_(stellaris), fungoid_(stellaris), etc. - but trying to tag individual species would rapidly become unwieldy. (arthropoid_slender_#5_(stellaris) doesn't exactly roll off the keyboard.)

On the other hand, post #905715 (for example) is recognizable as Molluscoid Normal #6, so maybe it and posts like it should be tagged as such.

Thoughts?

I agree that it would be overly specific to tag exact portrait selections within a species. But since the alternative is the generic species type, it would probably be fine to keep the stellaris tag separate from the species type. stellaris mammal for instance.

Genjar

Former Staff

There's also the preset empires, which tend to appear in most games. Those might be worth tagging by name eventually, if Stellaris becomes more popular here.

The slender, normal, etc interfixes are completely unnecessary. The numbers go up independently of them, so there's only one single arthropoid_5. And that's a tag that works, see arthropoid_18.

The question is, do we need the _(stellaris) suffix or no? I'd say no, but if it is included, users can search for *_stellaris to get species specific to it.

Is there a way for normal users to create species tags, or is that a staff-only power? (I noticed someone had created molluscoid_6 since I posted last.)

just put species: in front of a tag and it'll make it a species tag

That was me.

A warning regarding this: Unlike Derpibooru, where the prefix is a part of the tag, it is not here. species:foo and character:foo are the same tag. Whichever is used last determines the type of all previously existing foo tags, at least until it passes 100 posts (at which point only a staff member can change the type).
