While the modern horse only has one toe, it's ancestors had several. Like the Hypohippus, which had 3 toes.

What did they (or their feet) look like? well, it's a good question. Of course we don't know--they havn't been around in a few million years, but there are some critters that are somewhat related that are skill alive. :)

Odd toed Ungulates are an order of mammals that has, well, an odd number of toes and relatively simple stomachs (at least, compared to their even-toed relatives)... This order has three families kicking around today: Equidae (Horses, asses and zebras), Rhinos aaand...... tapirs! (okay, Tapirs too cute. have several pictures: X X X X

Oh, I forgot to actually detail the differences for even toed Ungulates -- they've got an even number of toes (GASP) and typically bear weight on their 3rd and 4th toes Aaaand, generally have more complicated stomach-systems.
