Topic: Avatar - hidden tag

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I guess 'user_avatar' is better since it won't bring up airbenders or blue space kitties.

This is one last one for me based on a little problem I have found no way around.

I understand some images have tags that don't show up in the tag list for various reasons, namely the rating tags and true/false tags. I am submitting 'user_avatar' to be among these invisible tags and to furthermore sort of auto-blacklist itself so anything tagged with it does not show up on a search.

Why?

The only way to get an avatar on here is to select a hosted image. Not everyone has something they want to use for an avatar that fits the appropriate requirements for a full-on post. Some people might want to use only part of an image as their avatar; in my case a single panel from a comic.

I cropped out the panel, uploaded it, put a description on it saying what I had done it for and linking back to the original image, and a source crediting the author. This was deleted for being a cropped version of an existing post, which it was. I am not upset about this because I know we can't be having the place flooded with snippets and weird things just so people can have avatars. I still want to use it as my avatar, though.

If we made 'user_avatar', or something like it, a tag - and a tag that doesn't show up in your search unless you actively search for it - it would solve two problems. First, the mods would know why this weird image was posted and not to delete it for the reason of it being a snippet or some crap or whatever. Second, people searching for posts wouldn't get inundated with people's avatar uploads.

I think it would be easier than trying to change the system to make a separate place to host these images & would allow people a little more freedom on what they want to use.

p.s. if anyone is interested, I was trying to use the top right panel of post #1376984 without using the whole page.

Icon is the tag for user avatars. Most crops used for avatars are looked down upon mainly because unnecessary edits of images aren't really wanted here.

Absolutely not to literally all of this proposal.

We're not an archive to host cropped images on, we will not allow cropped images1. If someone wants to use something as avatar or not is completely irrelevant to us, and we're not going to make even more exceptions to our Uploading Guidelines.

1 - Unless they're miraculously much higher quality than the full image, as has happened a few times.
