Another tag that I'm surprised isn't already implicated yet!

Because there's so much regional variation. I guess they mean the same thing in Australia, but in other parts of the world cup and glass are different. Cups are short, opaque, have a handle, and are made of earthware or porcelain. Glasses are tall, translucent, lack a handle, and are made of glass or plastic.
Shot_glass is a glass, not a cup. That's the popular view, judging by Google image search.
So I don't know how these should be handled in tagging..

Then what about the ones that are made of glass and have a handle? Is it a cup because it has a handle or a glass because it's made of glass?
And the ones that are made of porcelain and don't have a handle? Is it a cup because it's made or porcelain or a glass because doesn't have a handle?
In Australia, a glass is a cup made of glass.

I'd call that a glass.
...just amended the previous post, because those tend to be named based on translucence. For example, opaque paper cups are called cups almost everywhere, regardless of the shape.

The simplest way to do it is classify all of them as cups, the glass ones as drinking_glass to differentiate it from the substance and paper cups fall under disposable_cup.

I suppose so. It's liable to cause some confusion among users who aren't used to calling glasses cups, but trying to keep them separate would clearly be too much work.
What about holding_glass and holding_cup, though? There's quite a difference between the former (mostly alcoholic drinks) and the latter (teacups, etc).

If holding_glass and holding_cup were aliased, 'holding_cup drinking_glass' would work well enough. You can test this right now with '~holding_cup ~holding_glass wine_glass'.

That'd work, as long as they're tagged.
Glass should probably be disambiguated: shot_glass, cocktail_glass, wine_glass, etc. (Not to mention random windows, glass panels, etc.)

Yep, that's a must. Will the substance get a tag as well or do we change each instance to something more descriptive?

It seems redundant to tag windows, glasses, and other such things as 'glass'. And drinking glasses are going to be tagged as cup. So an umbrella tag seems unnecessary to me, we can probably manage without one.

Fair enough, plus there's always the chance that the window is made of Plexiglas or something. Very hard to tell from appearance alone.

Currently the only tag that implies to cup is: tea_cup
ie. this thread's implication suggestion of shot_glass -> cup has not been approved.

Currently wiki cup includes:
A cup is a drinking tool used for drinking liquid beverages such as tea, beer, soda and water.
Types:
Related:
...
Issue #1: cup wiki starts with "A cup is a drinking tool used for drinking liquid beverages ...."
but includes "measuring_cup" (which usually isn't used to drink).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cup says
"A cup is an open-top container used to hold liquids for pouring or drinking; it also can be used to store solids for pouring"
and includes measuring_cups.
How about expanding cup to something like:
"A cup is a container which can be
a) used for drinking liquid beverages such as tea, beer, soda and water."
and/or
b) used to pour liquid(s) (examples above) and/or solid(s) such as sugar and flour. (container example: measuring_cup)
Good idea?
* * *
Issue #2: wiki cup includes
...
but wiki glass says "A hard transparent substance used to make stuff like windows."
Any objections to changing line in cup wiki (above cocktail_glass)
FROM "* glass"
TO "* drinking_glass" ?
Currently the only drink*glass* tag is drinking_glass : with 70 posts (and six deleted).
(That's all i think of at the moment.
fighting off roommate's illness/bug)
