Topic: what are the tag guidelines for superhero characters?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Wondering what the guidelines are regarding tags for Marvel Comics superhero (or supervillain) characters.

Over at https://e621.net/forum/show/253934
( Tag Alias: hank_mccoy -> beast_(marvel) )
the conclusion (so far) was pink-skin Hank/Beast should be tagged as hank_mccoy
while furry Hank/Beast should be tagged as beast_(marvel).

Then in https://e621.net/forum/show/260421
( Tag Alias: scott_summers -> cyclops_(marvel) )

-1. Cyclops_(Marvel) is the superhero, Scott is the human.

The Kurt Wagner alias doesn't have a date attached, which suggests it was done before e621 started keeping track of it. We had different standards back then, and this one has no thread, either. While Scott's a debatable case, Kurt looks nothing like Nightcrawler.

Which left me confused. (in terms of superhero-character consistency)

Does what Furrin wrote mean that a superhero character should always be tagged with their civilian name,
with their superhero name only for when they are in superhero uniform? (except for separate tags for Hank and Beast)

The only difference (of e621 uploads) i can see between Kurt and Nightcrawler is that Nightcrawler in when he is in uniform.

Scott/Cyclops is always in humanoid mutant shape (simplified below as "human"), as far as i known.

Don't think any alternate version of Scott uploaded to e621, but just in case...
Some alternate version of Cyclops include :
1) in Age of X timeline, where he codenamed Basilisk, but still human (as far as i known), but with no eyelids.
2) Corporal Scott Summers, "raised as a black American slave" (human)
3) Cyclops of Bishop's Future Timeline, from future with "dependent on cyborg attachments to stay alive" (human with cyborg parts)
4) zombie Scott/Cyclops in Marvel Zombies (human -> zombie)
5) New Exiles
5a) "Summer Scott, a female version of Cyclops who is codenamed Starbolt" (so neither Scott nor Cyclops)
5b) bald "version of Cyclops whose codename is "Devo."" (meh to that name), so human except bald.

Kurt/Nightcrawler is always in blue-fuzzy shape, as far as i known.
(except for
1) Amerimanga version "with talon-like claws instead of toes and a metal tail"
2) Ultimate Marvel version where visual differences are .. (you know what ... nevermind??) ..
Should all Marvel characters named Nightcrawler gets the same tag: Nightcrawler_(marvel) ?)

EDIT: other superhero (or supervillain) threads:

Beast / Hank : link ABOVE

Cyclops / Scott Summers : link ABOVE

Squirrel Girl : https://e621.net/forum/show/235128 (in offtopic category, hmm)

(including) Wolverine / Logan : https://e621.net/forum/show/259670

(got as far as https://e621.net/forum?limit=30&page=7 ... ie. skimmed latest seven pages of forum thread titles + some threads. sleeptime)

Most of the heroes are not all that relevant to this site, but tagging Bruce Wayne for the playboy and Batman for the vigilante makes sense. They're visually distinct, doesn't seem useful to alias them.

And what we usually have on this site are furries wearing costumes. These are not Bruce Wayne, and it would make little sense to alias them with him:

post #837650 post #627156 post #400799

Same goes for other characters who have recognizable alternate personalities. Such as pinkamena_(mlp) and pinkie_pie_(mlp), which are implicated instead of aliased.

My idea was to keep the superhero and civilian names separate. The Kurt I was talking about was his Holographic form. His blue-fur/skin form should definitely be a Nightcrawler character tag, because he looks the same regardless of whether or not he has his outfit.

With Cyclops/Scott, if he's wearing sunglasses he's Scott (post #146064, if he's wearing a visor he's Cyclops (post #146431). Like I said, that one's debatable since it's one small accessory when he's not wearing any clothing.

Pondering other Marvel superheroes

Hulk, oh dear.

hulk (46 uploads) and the_incredible_hulk (10 uploads):
There seems to be confusion on what the_incredible_hulk tag (now copyright tag) should be used for, the_incredible_hulk seems to have been used instead of hulk tag for six to eight uploads. 46419 tagged with she-hulk and the_incredible_hulk (but only she-hulk shown), while the 28 other uploads of she-hulk not tagged with the_incredible_hulk.

(split hulk into awesome_hulk and incredible_hulk ??)

at least two characters named Hulk
1) alias Amadeus Cho
2) alias Bruce Banner (classic Hulk)

Wikipedia page about Amadeus Cho says "also known as Mastermind Excello, Prince of Power, Iron Spider, Spider-Man, The Hulk as of 2015, and Brawn" starred in The Totally Awesome Hulk

1) 2 posts tagged with Amadeus Cho:
1a) post #810105 , in Hulk-mode ... retag as awesome_hulk ???
1b) post #467553 , in human-mode ... at position 79 to the right of Man-Thing

2) 3 uploads tagged with bruce banner:
2a) only post #764707 shows Bruce
2b) post #85099 was tagged with bruce_banner, but depicts Hulk.
2c) third was deleted as duplicate

The Incredible Hulk works as a copyright tag. She-hulk, Hulk (Should we reverse the alias with the hulk? That way the amazing_hulk images can be kept separate more easily), and Bruce Banner should all imply that. Any other hulk-series originals, too.

Bruce Banner should be the pink-skinned human though, not the raging green one.

I assume when you wrote "amazing_hulk", you mean "awesome_hulk" (Amadeus Cho).

Copyright tag to accompany which character tags?
I mean, a copyright tag for all main characters of Hulk comics/media (including civilian tags)
or tag JUST for the Hulks. (NOT including civilian tags)

(Seems to me like an awkward copyright tag.
EDIT: If people still think a hulk copyright tag is a good idea how about tag that ends with _(copyright).
so taggers will no longer confuse the copyright tag with character tag)
one possible tag: marvel_hulks_(copyright) )

EDIT: I'm warming to the idea of copyright tag for the various Marvel Hulks. Still would prefer copyright tag end with (copyright) or some sort of bracketed word so taggers don't continue to confuse character tag with copyright tag

Hulks / civilian name
1) hulk / bruce_banner
2) she-hulk
2a) / jennifer_walters (she's smart and funny)
2b) / Lyra (there's a second She-Hulk?? Booo!), don't think she's been posted to e621 yet. (maybe tag as she-hulk_(Lyra) / Lyra_(she-hulk) since there are various Lyras already uploaded to e621)
3) Skaar / skaar_banner (no uploads yet of either) (7 uploads tagged with skaar are of non-Marvel character)
4) red hulk
4a) Thunderbolt Ross (no uploads yet)
4b) Robert_Maverick (no uploads yet)

5) red_she-hulk (2 uploads) / no uploads under her civilian names yet (Elizabeth "Betty" Ross -> Betty Talbot -> Betty Banner)

6?) abomination_(character), similiar to Hulk (green and powers from gamma radiation) but scaly. One upload post #778020 (probably change to abomination_(marvel))
7?) A-Bomb (resembles Abomination; powers from Abomination's blood) / rick_jones (no uploads of either yet) Rick Jones is Hulk's most famous sidekick/buddy (EDIT: A-Bomb/Rick was 2nd main character on TV series Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.. with team of A-Bomb and four full-Hulks)

nah) Hiro-Kala, son of Hulk (somehow doesn't look like a Hulk) http://comicbookdb.com/character.php?ID=26657

ALL *hulk* tags (even the NON-Marvel tags) :
1 green_hulk character
53 hulk character
1 hulk_(animal_crossing) character
1 hulk_(series) general
2 hulk_bunny_(character) character
3 hulk_davidson character
9 hulk_hogan character
2 hulk_smash general
1 hulksmash31_(artist) artist , single upload deleted for "...quality..."
1 red_hulk character
3 red_she-hulk character
26 shadowhulk artist
33 she-hulk character
2 she_hulk_bunny_(character) character
30 shulk character , doesn't seem to be a Marvel character.
12 the_incredible_hulk copyright
1 unf'r_hulk species

EDIT: i think incredible_hulk (OR the_incredible_hulk) would be good tag for the (usually green) Hulk that is also Bruce Banner. Having incredible in tag would help distinguish from Hulk(Amadeus Cho).
green_hulk doesn't seem like good tag as Hulk(Bruce Banner) started with grey_skin and had a later GREY_skin phase starting around issue #324. Hulk/Bruce also had Dark Hulk persona/form that has black skin.
(and other forms as well)

On a similar note,
thinking of the character (from Ducktales) Black Arts Beagle (acronym BAB)
"stage name Nik Nokturne".
(quote from https://ducktales.fandom.com/wiki/Black_Arts_Beagle )

When art is of BAB dressed as Nik, assuming both tags (black_arts_beagle and nik_nokturne) are appropriate.

Posted image of BAB (post #1811365 ),
but he isn't in costume ... so assuming just tag with black_arts_beagle (as he isn't wearing nik_nokturne costume)

black_arts_beagle (4 posts)
nik_nokturne (3 posts)

I think.... as a general rule.... since some super heros are stationary -- Clark Kent is basically always superman-- others are not. Green Lantern and spiderman come to mind, as superheros where the person under the mask can vary. So best to assume that any super hero could vary.

So I think it'd probably be best to, as a general rule:

  • Tag Peter Parker when it's the person behind the mask.
  • Tag Spiderman when it's an appropriately costumed crusader.
  • Tag both Peter Parker and Spiderman when it's obvious, somehow, that it's Peter Parker also.

There are some other possibilities.. like tagging spiderman_(peter_parker) and letting that imply spiderman instead, but that would get complicated and require a lot of aliases and implications for characters that, truth told, are not a major focus on the website, and in a lot of cases 1) there's no way of telling who's under the mask and 2) whoever's posting it might not have the skill ranks in comicbooks to recognize which spidey is this spidey.

Soooooo....

Sounds good, Lister, at least to *me*
