Topic: How Exactly Would I Tag An Artist?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

I want to upload a picture of mine but have never dealt with tags before. I know the gist, but for tagging the artist, me, would I tag it as "artist:username"? It just isn't too clear when tagging and I can't find any answer anywhere really. This is in question to tagging for the first time of uploading a picture.

If you are above the member rank, you can use the metatags such as artist: or character:

However, since you are a base member, you will have to manually change it via the tags page. Just add the tag to a post, go to the tag index, search for the tag, hit "edit". Change to the type of tag you want.

Yeah... "artist:name" used to work but they changed it to prevent n00bs from destroying tag types. So you have to just add the tag as a normal one, then as Dice said, go to the "Tags" tab at the top, search for your tag, click the "(edit)" link, then there will be a small box where you can change it to artist.

I would add to the above comments, for future reference, that if the tag doesn't exist yet, adding art:artist_name_here or char:character_name_here etc. from edit box will still create it as a artist/character tag instead of general. Regular members just can't change it from there once it has been created.

That's good to know. I also never knew you could do art: and char: instead of the full artist: and character: so that's also cool!

Also additionally, the feature where _(artist) at the end of the tag changed the tag into artist has been stripped as that shouldn't have been feature to begin with.

Stop instructing usage of this, this should not be used with artist names where there's no change of conflicting with exsisting tags.

Proper way of doing things is and has always been to tag everything, then change tag type trough Tags on top panel like have been stated. Prefixes were simply quick way of doing this, but like already stated as well, there has been so many cleanup process involving users forcing tag changes into something they shouldn't be.

How needlessly complicated for no reason. Any actual reason for this change?

Were new people really tagging using the prefix wrong? Because in my experience they just added the artist name as a tag or not at all when they were new.

Seems entirely pointless

If it were needless the change wouldn't of happened. The change was done because people were mindlessly changing tag types, stripping artists of title and characters of names. Whether it was because they didn't check to see if a name was already in use by another, the tag type conflicted with what they wanted it to be on the current post or they were just trolling. It wasn't trackable so the admins wouldn't actually know who was changing tag types, the new method creates a paper trail as well as prevents people from changing things without first checking the purpose of it. Which is 1000% better.

trust me, this change was good one. the amount of mess people would make with the easier tag typing was colossal and ridicuously hard to detect

Oh yes. Not frequently, but when it happened the mess was very difficult to track down and fix. The process may need to be simplified in the future but this was a good change.

It's just, this whole not base members thing never works out, there really isn't that many privileged users. And majority of us, myself included, always used it right.

They are very tight about handing out privileged. Maybe add one between member and privilidged, call trusted or something? Someone who has been here a while and tags well enough.

It's still an asinine process and will just guarantee new people will just not tag artist, as I have seen a few times already

So, making that change required effort. A lot of work, as well as discussion about how to implement this change. it wasn't an option we already had baked into the system, a switch somewhere that we flipped.

With this in mind, could you maybe please trust that we know what we're doing?

YOU may have used it right, but the majority of people is a lot of people.

I cannot tell you how many times over the years I've discovered an artist tag that looked like a mash of different art styles.... only to EVENTUALLY realize that someone changed a character tag into an artist tag. Or the other way around! Or to realize that some artist picked a name like Gaping Maw or Sapphire or Violin or something and someone didn't realize it should be Sapphire_(artist)

It happened.

It happened a lot.

It happened SO much that we said that we needed to do something about it because it was such a problem.
