Topic: Tagging mixed breed as hybrid?

Posted under Tag/Wiki Projects and Questions

Hey,

e621's definition of hybrids suggests that it doesn't include mixed breeds. Lion x Dog -> hybrid, labrador x dalmatian -> no hybrid.

I often upload pictures with mixed breeds on them and often those are tagged as hybrids by others. Alright, but now the tag I've used for these mixes is aliased to hybrids. This isn't only wrong by my definitons, but also the definitions of the site as I see it.

Am I alone with that opinion? Is there a way for me to reverse it or who do I have to go to for that appeal to not be simply ignored.

I could understand aliasing it to mixed breed or so, but hybrid?

basically, fused words such as foxdog get aliased to hybrid because it's stupid and redundant. If you want to tag hybrid species, tag the species that it belongs to along with the tag hybrid. i.e.
fox horse hybrid not fox_x_horse or foxhorse and so forth.

The only hybrid tags that are tolerated are species that exist like ligers

The fused words aren't the point, that mixed breeds are getting tagged as hybrids is what I am about.

Mixed is aliased to hybrid, too. There is that little tag mixed_breeds. Even has the wiki entrance that tells not to confuse it with hybrids.
There are however only 29 pictures with that tag right now and it's not a species type, either.

To save other people time: hybrid mixed_breed

Something you must keep in mind is that the website is not a living omnipotent being that lives in perfect harmony with itself. It's a thing that anyone can contribute to and any one person can add their ideas do.

mixed_breed, as a tag, had it's wiki page created lass than months ago. It is not, if you will, an officially sanctioned tag. And that's fine. it covers a particular niche.

That doesn't mean that when we, as the site staff, made a change and made an effort to clean up every single species tag on the site, that we didn't make a few mistakes or over sights.

I mean. I'd like to draw your attention to the hybrid wiki where it says "The following tags are aliased to this tag: foxttercoon, draquine, drolf, mixed_species, drox, foyote, drakitterwolf, macunny, orcagon, wolingo (428 more)"

now I see your tags in this list -- black_lab-dalmatian_mix and black_lab-dalmatian-mix which leads to part of the problem. It's hard to standardize that. which species comes first? how do you shorten it? some people like squishing names together, like this great_danematian, ... nevermind the Schnolfs and the Foxskyes, and the unigons and the worgis and whatnot.

however, black labrador is a tag and so is dalmatian ... those are standardized. I'd say "hybrid" is the right tag to use there. that said, I think mixed breed is not a bad tag to have either! though I already see some people misusing it. a dragon/velociraptor is NOT a mixed breed... I also see a wolf/lion and a few other dubious ones.

some people don't know the difference between breed and species. :|

That's for sure, unfortunatelly x.x
But I still think the difference is big enough to make a clear difference between what's hybrid and what's mixed breed. Especially with e621's tagging standards.

That said, I am not insisting on getting to use that very specific black_lab-dalmatian-mix tag again. A collecting term for tags like this, plus the original species/breeds would probably be the better solution to this. But I would ask for a few corrections on how it is at the moment.
Right now I have a bunch of former black_lab-dalmatian-mix tagged pictures that are tagged as hybrid now. And even if I would change them to mixed breed by hand I can't change hybrid on some cause black_lab-dalmatian-mix is locked to them.

So don't use black_lab-dalmatian-mix and just used mixed_breed. We're only supposed to tag component species/breeds, not whatever you call the result. The only exceptions to this are real-world hybrids, which instead have the hybrid implication.

This is definetly a #mood around here, haha. If you knew how much sighing we do about people getting their species mixed up.... :)

I can fix those up for you :)

it looks like the pictures of jess_(kinaj) should:

  • have hybrid and black_lab-dalmatian-mix removed

have mixed_breed added
ensure that black_labrador and dalmatian are also both tagged.

Does that seem right? :)

Definitelly does, yes. Thank you so much for that, already^^
And sorry for any inconvenience. I am really grateful for the help though!

I know that now. Been tagging black_lab-dalmatian-mix from the beginning and except for random users tagging that to hybrid I've never experienced any problem with it. Gonna remember that from now on.

So I don't wanna say anything, but after 2 weeks nothing happened. I still can't even change the hybrid tag on some of these uploads. Been sending a dm to the admin who locked them back then, but no respons there so far either.

Sorry, it's been a REALLY bad few weeks for me.

That said, I only found one post with 'hybrid' on it, but I went through all of the jess_(kinaj) pictures and performed -hybrid -black_lab-dalmatian-mix mixed_breed black_labrador dalmatian on them...

including the one that had 'hybrid' on it... which didn't have anything 'locked' on it.

Perhaps I'm confused about the problem?

I've checked before I've written that last post and back then everything was like it was 2 weeks ago. Everything I've uploaded before that comic had hybrid, including the comic that had black_lab-dalmatian-mix locked to it.

Not sure what happened between me writing this post and you looking it up, but now however everything is as wished and I thank you very much!
