Topic: Amazing video game soundtracks

Posted under Off Topic

Part of an amazing game is an amzing soundtrack to go with it. Here's a list of some of my favorites.

1. The Last of Us
The Last of Us was an incredible game. It was emotional, scary, and beautiful. The soundtrack was perfect and it added so much more to an already inredible game.

2. Grand Theft Auto V
I love this game. It's an amazing adventure and a roller coaster ride from start to finish. The music was cool, with jazz and funk elements, which just sounded great and matched the pace and story beautifully.

3. L.A. Noire
This was a great game that put you in the shoes of Cole Phelps, who works his way through the ranks to become one of the LAPD's greatest detectives. The soundtrack for this game was nothing but simple jazz, but it just fit perfectly.

So, what are your favorite soundtracks?

Armored Core
Generation 1 (Armored Core, Project Phantasma, Master of Arena, 2, Another Age) - Set to old style techno. Best song would have to be '9' and 'High Fever'. It was just such a good experience playing to that BGM.
Generation 2 (3, Nexus, Nine Breaker, Formula Front, Last Raven) - Remixed techno. Modified some of the older tracks like 'Nine~Novem' and 'Insurance Money ver.sil'. Still great in my opinion, especially 'Fake Facer'.
Generation 3 (4, for Answer) - Set to orchestral music. Great chorus and coordination, went a little more techno-orchestra on for Answer. Best songs for this generation would be 'Spirit of Motherwill', 'Cosmos', 'Fall', 'Someone is Always Moving on the Surface', 'Grind Room', 'Mr. Adam', 'Pump Me Up', 'Twist It', and 'With Heat'.
Generation 4 (V, Verdict Day) - Set to pseudo-dubstup. Notably these songs include some form of bass drop and a slow build into a combat based beat. In Verdict Day, some older songs were remade for select battles.
-VD Remixes-
High Fever (Sweetest Thing) - Played on a certain North American map similar to a six walled research complex with halls connecting the outer halls.
Mechanized Memories - Played during N-WGIX encounters
The Motherwill Comes Again - Played during the special sortie.

The minds behind the music were so pleased at their success, they released two exclusive albums featuring modded songs from the various ages, SUNRISE and Armored Core Reprises. Along with this, OCRemix released an album called 'THE ANSWER', a compilation of 11 completely remixed songs from the series.

Edit: They also made a song in reference to Halo. In V, you fight an almost invincible AI known as Chief and if I'm not mistaken the theme song is always 'Halo' by FreQuency.

I refer you to Favorite OSTs thread.

Which is like this thread, except 2 pages long, covering anime as well, and 24 days older. 6_9

If I had to pick just one, it would be Phoenix Wright 2.

Man, so many people overlook the soundtrack when making a game. It's so important! A scene can be completely turned around with different backing.

My personal favourite is the Portal 2 soundtrack. If you listen closely, each track closely follows the narrative of the story. Each character and setting has their own sound (Wheatley's is especially noticeable).

Although I've never played the game, Tiny Barbarian DX has an amazing chiptune soundtrack. It's more Megaman-ish than Megaman.

I'd say my favorites are:

Sonic 2 (Mega Drive/Genesis)
Dragon Valor (PSX)
Final Fantasy Dissidia (PSP)
Command & Conquer (PC)
God of War series (PS2/3).

All of these OST are as memorable as the games themselves are.

The MOTHER trilogy had a beautiful soundtrack from beginning to end.
Especially the end.
It’s some of the most unforgettable music I’ve heard. It's the only music that’s ever made me feel like crying… and it’s from a kid’s game. Albeit one that I’m not ashamed to admit that I loved.

Hell yeah. And actually, while that end is indeed beautiful that definitely goes for the beginning too.
A showcase of how relevant a song written for an ancient 5-channel chip can still sound if it's been written well.

Also, who could forget this magnificence? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErOXbIqEYos

The Walking Dead Seasons 1 and 2 both have great soundtracks, and Season 3 will hopefully have a good one too.

When it comes to great music, Bungie always delivers. Which makes me wonder why they fired their lead composer after he made the main theme for Destiny…
Also, that was one of my favorite songs to play in Metal Gear Online.

Oh yes, I loved the Siegue of madrigal easter eggs in Bungie's Halo era.
Personally I belive that soundtracks as good as they are, don't need an adrenaline filled songs with all bosses, sometimes something calm gives you a new point of view, I give Metal Gear that I didnt expected this in Peace Walker

Bastion has a great soundtrack, I'm impressed nobody has mentioned it yet.

And as I've said before the Megaman X to X6 soundtrack and a bunch more of other games I would mention but that would take too long.

Also, this is my newest favorite.

The shadow of the colossus soundtrack was truly a masterpiece, despite it not being done my an actual orchestra.

Silent Hill. All of them.

In the order I played them:

ActRaiser (SNES; Symphonic FLACs) - yeah... this is still good!

Final Fantasy VIII (PS1; all FF FLACs, probably easier) - this is probably the game that got me into video games. In a game without audio dialog, its solid OST went a long way in setting or enhancing the tone for each area. Here's the memorable opening cinematic.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES; FLAC click the button on the right) - I guess I should include this. Game was all-around solid entertainment.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2; FLAC) - the pristine radio programming gave me a clear and fun impression of something before my time.

C&C Red Alert II - Hell march 2]

I really liked this footage of a North Korean 'Hell March' from a parade. Their uniformity was spellbinding, especially when a couple hundred soldiers briefly appear airborne in unison during mid-stride.

Yes. That, Pollyanna (I like the EarthBound rendition the most) and the Eight Melodies struck such a chord with me eh? eh? that I went and played them on piano. Those are some of the most beautiful songs I've heard.

Pollyanna is lovely too. In fact, I like it so much that once I started getting the hang of FamiTracker a bit (I still suck, just not as much as before), the first thing I did was this: Dropbox file

It's essentially 8bitDanooct's awesome 1:1 cover of the original track, but I tooled around with it a bit, the general idea being to get something with a higher resemblance to Catherine Warwick's version on the Mother album. Except with a loop at the end so that it could theoretically work in-game if somehow imported. I like that idea.

By the way, you need this for playback if you're interested: http://famitracker.com/files/FamiTracker-v0.4.2.zip

I said it before, and I'll say it again: Unlimited SaGa. Shitty game (it basically killed the SaGa series it was so bad), beautiful soundtrack. Its score was composed by Masashi Hamauzu, the same man who composed Final Fantasy XIII. Unlimited SaGa really displays his quirkier loose-cannon side. I feel like he wasn't as afraid of taking risks with Unlimited SaGa as he was FF XIII.

Grooving out so hard right here ...

Anyone ever mention the Jazz Jackrabbit games? The OSTs were made by two different composers, Robert Allen for the first game and Alexander Brandon (of Deus Ex and Unreal fame, you know the guy) for Jazz 2, but while there are stylistic differences they're really just equally great, and can only be described as MOD nirvana.

Here's most of my favorite tracks:

JJ1:

Main Theme
Sluggion
Cryselis
Medivo
Diamondus
Fanolint
Battleships
Marbelara
Bonus Stage
Tubelectric
Scraparap

JJ2:

Frollick Lane
Medivo II (Medival Jam)
Labratory
Jazz Belmont
Hippie Heaven
Pull Back The Bass / Credits
Boss Battle 2
Streetwize
Carrotus
Fast Track
Dark Groove (this fucking song)
Jazz Be Damned

How does no one post some ghost and goblins yet?

Because that's the only memorable song it has, IMO. The rest of it is pretty average early 8-bit fare, slightly too simplistic and barebones to my taste, and also looping way quickly. Though that doesn't have to be a dealbreaker if what there is happens to be quality stuff, like Nintendo managed with many of their early first party titles. I mean, of course that's by far the most important part of a good OST.

G&G's first stage song is no exception in being short and not at all pushing the 2A03 chip's limits (that'd be stuff like this and this, but it's a really catchy tune that's amusingly spooky, it can hang with those aforementioned classic Ninty songs. Can't say the same for the rest of the tracks.

Also Monaco has nice ost too. A bit repetitive but really awesome

A whole OST based around a single piano? That's pretty interesting. I need to read up on this game because I've never even heard of it. By the way, "What's yours is mine", wasn't that the Thief reboot slogan too?

idk about the logo but if you are going to play it do it with 3more. Nice music and a lot of fun garanteed. Its cool when you get spoted or you kill someone and the music goes fast.

It was the logo for one of the trailers, but it didn't really stick for the whole game for whatever reason. Monaco came before the Thief reboot by about a year, perhaps that's why? I'm not sure if logos can be trademarked, but since it was Monaco's subtitle I think that it counts as part of the trademark, so it definitely could be the reason.
