Topic: Underrated music genres or styles?

Posted under Off Topic

Personally, I think most Country, Western, and American folk aren't given enough credit, especially by younger generations.
Of course, this could also be said about any older songs (like the examples I used for Western & American Folk), but I'd say those genres especially are forgotten.

Anything that isn't pop music is going to be seen as underrated by those that are biased towards other genres. I'm hugely into Death Metal and while it isn't played on generic radio stations or can be classed as mainstream, it still has a significant community that enjoy it. It's always more about how I personally feel about it anyway, so I don't really concern myself with levels of attention something I like receives. Also, I think it's better if things you enjoy get less attention. It means there less likely to become oversaturated.

I definitely agree with both points. Even without traditional mainstream presence, I know death metal, and metal in general, is HUGE. But, it's also huge. I think you'd be hard pressed to find somebody in a western/first world country find somebody who hasn't at least heard PART of a song that could be called metal, let alone know of it. I'd say it sits just about at peak popularity; Enough listeners for it to not be niche, and instead have many talented artists with diverse personal styles, but not so many listeners that any old person could probably find traction and dilute the overall quality of the genre.
But I think that having at least some mainstream appeal (even as much as songs used in some sort of media like movies, TVs, video games) is better that having none. It brings more listeners to a product, and gives artists a chance to make careers of it, or otherwise commit to contributing to genre/style.

Even in the deep south, there are many who see country as nothing more than hick garbage. And, well, I guess I can see how it's easy to get that impression. But there is so much gold out there that most people aren't aware of.

Every music lover should be able to find some appreciation for something like this.

There's something to be said about giving things a try, even if they aren't your usual jam.

I mostly listen to metal, but my favorite is symphonic metal which seems to be a little more overlooked than the more popular metal bands.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YWBE8oY6W3g

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dPXBwPvq6gk

These songs only have a few hundred views even though I feel they have a great deal of thought and effort put into them.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AeUjfxTkgfY

One of my favorite singers is Tarja Turunen she was classically trained since childhood, she used to be the singer in nightwish but I enjoy her solo band more. Again I feel she's underrated, after all the schooling and effort she put into her voice very few people know her name.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TkbadvaMuXo

Lastly my favorite band Eluveitie, a folk metal band that largely sings in reconstructed gaulish. Apart from singing in a dead language they also use traditional instruments such as a hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes.

OP: You like Peter, Paul, and Mary? How about John Denver? Great stuff there.

Classical is always there in a way, but at the same time I wish more people listened to it regularly. They were playing it at a McDonald's of all things the other day and I wanted to kiss the manager on the cheek. It totally changed the feel. Now, cheap pop fits Mickey-D's just fine, but there is nothing worse than going to a classy, $20 a-plate restaurant and hearing Nicki Minaj's latest hot trash. Don't I sound like an elitist? :]

That aside, it's getting impossible to find anyone my age who knows who The Cure, Erasure, Simple Minds, Depeche Mode, OMD, or The Police are. I can also add Yaz (Yazoo in Europe), Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, etc... 80s Alternative is where it's at yo.

Well, that's a difficult question. Sort of requires defining music in the first place. Is it musical? Yes. Is it music? Well...

That's pretty good stuff. Although, if I had to throw something out there for an underground electronic sound, I'd say Eurobeat, which I'd call a sort of "cult genre". It has fans, for sure, but they seem to stick to themselves a lot.

I feel like most people I encounter don't give video game music a fair chance, but I genuinely enjoy it more than the stuff that radio stations play on the air these days. Also I feel like whatever this is classified as is underrated. I swear, it's like a mix of metal and electronic music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6KFfYdNPh8

Yes, it is a genre, and the genre has several names, most well known of which are "Elevator Music" and "Muzak".

Personally, I'm in a perpetual state of trying to find new music styles and genres, so there's a lot that I like that is rather... not very well known. I don't know that I would call it underrated though - people like what they like, and I don't have the right to say that they should like something different than that.

I do wish that more styles of music were played more often though, just because personally I get bored with how much a few popular broad genres nearly completely push out a lot of other stuff that people might like if given a chance.

Classical & Smooth Jazz.
Like Aster Viridian mentioned with Classic, I wish more listened.

When I told an acquaintance that I like getting lost in Classical music on my car radio (because it has a head clearing quality which helps with anxiety), they said "that's the gayest thing I've heard".

Yep. Classical music is gay now.

Does a metal cover of classical music count?

You then might also like Enter Shikari (if you don't know 'em already) and The Algorithm. If you want something really crazy then check out A Challenger Approaches.

I would count that as a "metallic reimagining/remake" of classic, but not truly classic. Sort of a liberal remix (if I'm using 'remix' right).

Sure does live up to the goth feel it was going for though.

I wasn't sure what to call it either, it is from the Dies irae sequence and mozart as well as others have used it in compositions. The last song I linked to is just a modern metal version of that.

that's one of my favorite things about symphonic/folk metal, I learn a lot of neat stuff.

I have a mini-playlist for eurobeat I listen to when I need to amp up, besides the one I already sent, here's the top three

Honestly I used to be really into electronic music, but I sort of lost interest once I got introduced to pop-punk. From there my interests have changed even more drastically, but tend to stay near rock, and generally more towards music with, for lack of a better word, "real" instruments. (I.E. a guitar, drums, ect., so that emcompasses like rock, country, etc.)

For me it depends on my mood. I really like old-school rock, country and 1950s-60s-type music (all heavily influenced by being a big fan of the Fallout games). I really enjoy electro-swing because of the way it blends old style music with the new:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBGSJ3sbivI

But recently I've been wanting something a bit faster paced, which led me to discover Renard's work, which I kinda knew existed but never really delved into until now. It's really frantic and crazy, and I absolutely love it (and not just because the artist's a furry) !

Me too! I grew up listening to groups like Squirrel Nut Zippers, Cherry-Poppin' Daddies, Brian Setzer, Royal Crown Revue, and tons of other swing, neo-swing, boogie-woogie, and jazz groups. I also love most kinds of electronic music so it's a great marriage. I think Parov Stelar might be my favorite, with Catgroove near the top.

Caravan Palace is great. Lone Digger is an old classic, probably the first electro swing song I remember hearing and liking. Super furry (and brutal) music video too lol.

That's awesome, a friend had that playing a couple of months ago, and I asked him for the name but then misremembered it as "Pavlov", couldn't find the song and then forgot about it. Thanks !

I knew Caravan Palace quite a while before they made Lone Digger, when it came out I was really surprised (in a good way) ! Have you seen the video they did for their new track Miracle ? It makes Lone Digger look tame, and I still can't quite believe that Youtube is fine with it being on there.

Honestly? I like both modern and old music, but something about mixing them together just doesn't work for me. Although, I do enjoy this song a fair bit.
But modern bands taking inspiration from older bands is always cool, like Greta Van Fleet undeniably was inspired by Led Zepplin and other similar styled bands/songs

I'm not familiar with that genre. What is it called? Boogie-woogie or jazz? I'm not sure if either are right.

There's some Country & Western that I enjoy. Chris Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey is a favorite, since I enjoy both the drink and the lazy-afternoon tempo. However, I largely lost respect for the genre after it turned both formulaic and political (looking at you Toby Keith).

I like jazz, but for a largely under-the-radar genre, I'm into Spanish guitar.

The tempo reminds me of Makin' Me Look Good Again by Drake White. Actually one of the recommended videos after listening to it was back to Chris Stapleton.

(looking at you Toby Keith)

Honestly? I don't listen to much Toby Keith, save for You Ain't Much Fun, so I wouldn't know.

Yep. I'd call that Electronic Metal.

Also...

Have some Kirby boss music.
It loops endlessly (don't think there's any other version) so ~2m of listening is good.

Now that's my kind of topic :D
I myself am too, constantly looking for new interesting genres since i listen to music basically everyday. Here's my list of genres that i find quite unpopular ( maybe someone listens to similiar music, i'd be happy to get more songs of particular genres ) with best examples i could find:
Wall of text in the sections below!

Disclaimer-I use the names for the genres that i often see people refer to them as such. Also sorry for sounding like an elitist here, but i like to have everything sorted :v and don’t crucify me if i got some songs incorrectly by their genre)

post #154253, a music thread for me to force share my exquisite taste onto the unwilling masses. :3

I find that rock operas are under-appreciated. Everyone has listened to Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall", but how many have actually listened to the whole The Wall album?

Some of my favourites:

Not sure if this entirely counts, but early 80s Eurobeat is a genre I quite find myself enjoying. It overall spiraled into something a bit more well-known, but the early days aren't looked at much in recent times.

I imagine it's at least semi-difficult to find

As for me it's Metal. The public image of metal is just some old bearded creeps brutally and stupidly hitting each other. This resembles only such a small portion of Metal. Metal is can be way more complex than people recognise. Songs like and justice for all are goddamn masterpieces!

I have foud two cool YouTube channels for a Power Metal and Progressive Metal fan. Black Metal Promotion with tons of new black metal albums and Black Metal Albums with full albums of underground black metal. Some of the best songs I even downloaded from YouTube to mp3 to listen tothem anytime I want. Luckily there are many free programs that can help to save any video from the Internet.

Power Metal isn't particularly underrated. It's one of the most popular genres around.

I'd say... Aggrotech, Futurepop, and Deep Neo-Synthpop. VNV Nation is pretty much the only band that achieved widespread success in those genres.

I hold out hope that 3rd wave Ska will someday make a comeback.

The world just isn't ready for the 4th wave, bro.
So here I am, with my checkered vans, pork pie hat, and suspenders, waiting.

Definitely Experimental Metal/Rock and what I would call...Clown Music. Y’know, Mr Bungle, some songs of Dog Fashion Disco. That type of Clown Music.

Also I love Metal with Bagpipes.

love metal/rock the most but I can listen to classic music from time to time

"By whom?" Though the answer depends on it...Anyway in my opinion , it is Japanese 歌い手 / Utaite / singer of the internet .
Example :
- After the Rain [ Soraru x MafuMafu ] , which sang the Pokémon2020[Jpn] theme song 1・2・3 . ( Eng : Original Ver. , Arranged Ver. )
- Tomohisa_Sako , which sang the PokémonXY[Jpn] theme song ゲッタバンバン [Mad Paced Getter] ( Eng : Destiny is calling to me! *cringes* )
I love them, and I'm sure people abroad do too.
However, I've heard that some Japanese guys who don't understand don't like them for unreasonable reasons.
As you've heard, to the guys, their singing style is out of the ordinary. ← I don't think so.
The guy wants to return to the pre-DP style (including the animation). Though such ideas sound rather outdated Now to me.

Also, I don't wanna say but I think mainly whom = Japanese TV. It tends to downplay the anison / Japanese_anime_song , I think.
Even though there is such great songs . ( Eng : Nice and cool translation ) ← Using "the Blackadder Chord" !!

Well if you are talking about European power metal, it isn't too popular in the United States.

Most people in the United States are more into stuff like Slayer,Slipknot, metallica, megadeth and such and don't know about more obscure bands.

A band known as Blind Guardian wrote a whole album based on the The Silmarillion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0vBVAglUho

Rhapsody of fire, the lead guitarist used to be in a band called Rhapsody of Fire, but is now in a band called Rhapsody of Fire. It's complicated.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHolTqDXipc

A more recent Italian metal band called Ancient Bards.

I really like neo-psychedelia (I think that’s what it’s called).

Some of my favorite bands in the genre: of Montreal, MGMT, Tame Impala, Crumb, The Unicorns, Fever the Ghost

.

I also like a lot of noisy drone/sludge metal (Boris, early Melvins, Sunn O))), Earth, Neurosis, Acid Bath)

Idk if these are underrated, but I don’t see them talked about much outside of a few big bands

I have to say that I very much share the opinion of the person that opened this thread, decrying very much that many young people of today do not know the good music of the past. But I believe, that if anything else fails, the young people of today, around the world, could enjoy very good music that comes from Anime and Games made in Japan (e.g. Final Fantasy, NieR Automata, etc.).

I am not expert in this niches of Japanese-made music, but in my family there are "Gamers" and "Otakus", and thanks to them from time to time I hear good music they listen (or even, modify as "covers"- as they call them - , since some want to make a carrier Video Game music and animation).

Even I have used some of these themes to make some Furry videos, for my personal entertainment...

Taiyoo wa Shinanai
Always in this Place

And a couple of further examples of wonderful songs made for Japanese Video Games...

Dark ambient is such a genre.
It's atmospheric, moody, and not very stimulating, so obviously, it's not popular at parties.
Take, for example, Bobby Krlic, who composed the soundtrack for the movie Midsommar. Under his alias - The Haxan Cloak, he produced a dark ambient album - Excavation which features one of the most stunning tracks of the genre.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5d8r2nrqlA
Clocking at nearly 13 minutes, it feels like a slow and methodical (ritualistic even) descent into a dark abandoned palace.
The place where dark ambient shines the most is soundtracks, improving the atmosphere of media it's scoring in many ways. A great example of that would be the score of original isometric Fallout games by Mark Morgan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqGXf4pOMBE
Stripped down, bleak, and industrial, like a reverberation through the carcass of the dying world.

Dark ambient often makes sparse use of noise, bringing me to another underrated style.
Most people perceive noise as something trollish, but if you take time to explore lighter variations, you will find it very engaging.
Noise rock is a good example of not shying away from being loud and chaotic. Take, for example, this track by noise rock duo Lightning Bolt.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kslDpRueLA
If you ever wanted to feel like Chev Chelios from Crank movies, this track is definitely for you.
Not to mention, that noise can be straight-up beautiful, as heard in this composition by Pita.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSCZVkQJw7U
It's a short Ennio Morricone sample manipulated to the extreme, ear-splitting screeching included. Yet, track progression with peaks and plateaus turns it into an audial journey.

I can’t believe I forgot about Animal Collective! Marriweather Post Pavilion is a top tier album

Midsommar

I heard the piece. It really creates an ambient as you describe. I didn't know the genere ... so this really is in the spirt of the thread.

Wow! You really sound very passionate about this kind of music, and one senses that you have real knowledge of it.

I respect almost all artistic expressions. Surelly this genere have a lot of intelligent fans, like you.

Personally, I feel this genere really desn't seem for me, not much because I don't feel able to perceive its aesthetic qualities, but because... well, it is "Dark". What I have always needed along my life was "Bright". I really think that if I go into dark things, they will swallow me, so to speak. I had always felt - even more in my childhood - that I was surrounded by a "malignous reality", and in order to survive it, I have to look for optimistic, beautiful and lively things. Furry - as I understand it - most than anything.

Regards.

Nurse With Wound is great! His Simple Headphone Mind collab with Stereolab is fun too.

I think that's reasonable. This is highly speculative, but there's some evidence that sad music might create a negative "feedback loop", especially if we're talking about depression.

Now that I think about it, I consider myself, by Nature – not by will, maybe – a bit "resilient" about depression, even if I feel very much resistance to progress in my goals from the events and opposing forces in daily living and “destiny”.

Still, I try to practice a kind of basic "mental hygiene". And so, I firmly believe that sad things are not for me, and I try not to indulge on them.

And regarding modern Slavic Rock, I think "Alisa" have good songs.

Thanks, I enjoyed this album of Chernikosvskaya ... I plan to listen to it while I pump some iron today

Seeing, while checking your links, that really there is a lot of interesting modern Russian music around. But to explore all this landscape and putting me to date, will be a lot of effort for me. But it is very good to know that it is there.

Thank you, Secret Fox. =).
