It's the long form, but less of a chance of it getting confused with something else (whatever that might be).

Having one aliased to the other is a good idea so both don't end up floating around, but I don't know that it's really necessary to go in the direction you're suggesting. I think 'USA' is pretty globally understood.

*shrugs* Just my thought. Either works for me in the end.

We generally steer away from abbreviations with tags, though in this case usa is one of the few times we could probably do so.

However, I just realised the exact same type of alias needs to happen with uk vs united_kingdom. And I don't think uk is quite as clear as an abbreviation.

So I'm going to approve them as the abbreviation to --> the full name for both of them, for the added clarity and consistency. Even though usa/united_states_of_america could have gone either way, I think the other reasons make this direction the better choice overall.

And how about America?

Technically refers to Canada/Mexico/all the little countries underneath that, but by itself it's more of a synonym for the United States. It's probably fine to alias it after a quick sweep for outliers.

That's a good point. There actually wasn't anything tagging under america that was actually about any other part of the american continents. I guess the association of "america = USA" really is that strong, so an alias should be fine.

So, I aliased america to --> united_states_of_america. And I also aliased american to --> united_states_of_america because we don't tag nationality of a character anymore than we tag their religion or orientation or private thoughts, but if there's stuff about the country/culture/emblems/etc then we'd tag that as the country. And that's most of what was under american anyways.

And then I ran into stars_and_stripes which is for the nationalistic pattern on or off the flag itself vs american_flag/usa_flag/us_flag. I started to clean it up but realised that both tags are being used in the same way: for the flag, the emblem, and the pattern inspired by the flag incorporated into everything from backgrounds to clothing to bodypaint. So instead, I went through and made sure all the stuff that's actually a flag is tagged with the flag tag, and I think it'd be best to alias american_flag into --> stars_and_stripes because it's slightly more broad for the same exact thing. We did a similar thing for union_jack, which is just as prone to be part of a shirt or tattoo as it is to be the actual flag itself. And that seems to work rather well.

And then I think the stars_and_stripes tag could be implicated to --> united_states_of_america since it's one of the main types of imagery for evoking USA and I don't see any other use in there.

Thanks. I really appreciate the feedback. =)

And the rest of this is finalized (was holding off for a day or so just to make sure there weren't any objections which needed addressed first.)

I know this thread is old but it won't let me create a new one as it says united_states_of_america is already aliased to something else (which it's not).

Aliasing united_states_of_americaunited_states
Link to alias

Reason

1. There is currently no alias or implication between united_states and united_states_of_america.

2. The tag united_states is more concise than united_states_of_america
