Not sure on this. Displacer Beasts exist in various media now. A lot of Roguelike games, for instance.

Maybe so, but they as a species were still created and owned by the company behind D&D. Shouldn't it get a copyright tag?

As a product of D&D, they're owned by Wizards of the Coast, and are not under an open use license. If they appear in any media not also owned by WotC, then it's either stolen, or the rights were rented for specific purposes and still belongs to WotC.

But my point is that from different media they might look significantly different. We have tags - copyright tags included - for the purpose of searching, not primarily for explaining where legally a copyright might reside. So again, not sure on this one, because I don't think someone searching for D&D or WotC are looking for Displacer Beasts from other games or whatnot.

If they look significantly different then should they be called displacer beasts at all? And if they're going to call them displacer beasts anyway, just add the copyright tag.

They are a species owned by them, still. The "Disney" tag includes all Disney characters, even if they're in a kemono style. Just take a look at kemono disney.
