What is up these commercials? Hopper Kangaroo, KIA SouL with their hamsters, most recent one if you've seen it, CarFAX fox, etc. (Name more if you know). Who are they attracting? Kids, adults who are kids, furries? Does it leave an impression on you?

By far the most funniest mascot commercials I saw are from

The Panda Cheese Company

Of course, their mascot is a CUTE & INNOCENT (yet EVIL) panda(figures).

I think it attracts more to kids, yet it's kinda old.

Now, let's see how many "lolz" I can get.

They seem really juvenile to me. I don't understand why they would have things like that in a car ad.

Honestly I don't mind these commercials, they are not that bad.
I like seeing them over The Tax Doctor Commercials every 5 minutes. It's as if they went through the internet and found the absolute shittiest cgi loops and slapped it on and said "Whatever, it's good enough."

To add to your list you have:

The Aflac Duck
It's not a new phenomenon in the slightest...
The Cadbury Rabbit
The one to rival Lola when it comes to furries.
Chester Cheeto
Tony the Tiger
The Geico Gecko
^That one actually sums up the reasoning behind the mascots right there...^

I like the Orangina advert

more adverts

But here in Germany we have only boring stuff like this guy as bank mascot, a fox for washing agent ...

Things like the KIA hamster or the mentioned Orangina stuff aren´t on regular TV programms, only in shows about funny commercials from other nations

To answer the question:

Mascots are there to give a product a recognizable face. For kids are products with Maya the Bee on it more attractive then another, equal product, just because they know the character from the show.

(Example; taken from a Yoghurt)

When it comes to adults, then a bit more complex (the animal fitting) jokes do the trick, or in case of the fox as washing agent mascot they use the stereotypicial "foxes are thrifty" cliche to say that this product has a low price.
Marketing wasn´t my best subject at school
