Topic: What the hell happened with the takedown system?

Posted under General

I uploaded a flawed version of my last post, and realized my mistake too late. I fixed it, and uploaded the new one. Then promptly went to delete the old with a takedown request.

The last time I did a takedown request it was simple, I filled in the reason and gave the number to the post.

Except this time, I need to do some weird verification. I fill in the 2 slots of which post, and the reason. And then it tells me I have to send some verification code to an email or something.

Why in the world do I need to do this?

"To verify you are who you say you are" Is what it says.

Are you joking? I'm logged into my profile posting this, I'm logged in posting the takedown request. When did all this change? Why is it so damn complicated now?

Are you sure you're not confusing the takedown system and the flag for deletion system?

The takedown system has asked for verification codes ever since the system was created years ago. This is so artists from FA, IB, and other sites could verify that it was in fact them who submitted the takedown request by sending the verification code from their FA account to the takedown admin's FA account (which used to be my FA account back when I was the one handling takedowns). It was much, much less common for artists to submit their own artwork directly to e621 back then, and so situations like yours practically never happened.

The takedown system is very simple and does not track what user is filing a takedown (because requiring that people have user accounts in order to submit a takedown request would be a dick move). It DOES track your IP address however, and the takedown administrator (currently NotMeNotYou) is aware that comparing the IP of the takedown submitter to the IP of the artist's account here on e621 is a valid proof of identity.

In short, I wouldn't expect any trouble with having your takedown request processed, but what you're seeing is a takedown system that was designed long ago and needs to be updated to better handle the current site.

Edit: Actually, in your case, a flag-for-deletion is what you need, not a takedown request. You're wanting to replace an old version of an image with a new, correct version. That is something that is completely allowed under FFD rules, and so that's the direction that you need to go instead.

I'm not sure why it didn't complain about verification last time, but it didn't. Maybe it's because I only just now got a FA account about an hour ago. But I'm not using it for anything atm so these instructions simply work to confuse me.

But what char said, upload the new one and flag the old version for deletion, best with a reason like "Updated version at xxxx".
There is no need for a takedown request of you just wish to replace the image with a better/new one.

You only need the takedown if you want something gone permanently, or if you accidentally upload the full res version instead of a smaller one.

Or if it's been longer than 48 hours since you uploaded it.
