-1 a masturbator might be the name for a sex toy but it's also what you call someone who is masturbating, toy or no.

In contrast I've never heard a toy called that until now. I guess it could be disambiguated

I can say that I'm not native english speaker so I won't always catch on terms and slangs used, but I'm almost certain that word masturbator is pretty universally term for penetrable sex toys used for penile masturbation for males and I would need some kind of context where this would be used for someone who masturbates.

Because usually if someone is doing activity, they are referred to do the activity rather than getting title of being doer of the activity. e.g. Football player or playing football, not footballer.

maybe it's the fact I've never spent time looking for toys to encompass this activity. Figuring they had distinctive names like the pocket pussy and not having a title which ones can say to refer to all the different types of penile masturbation.

In dialogue I'd be sooner to understand someone if they said
"I walked in on a masturbator, it was awkward for both of us."

Whether I'm the only one who didn't recognize this as being a term, or if others didn't think to use the word in that context either I don't know.
